Coming in this Sunday's New York Times Magazine : A profile of a former "star in the Republican party," Rep. Tom Davis of Virginia. As the heading has it: "Now, like dozens of his GOP colleagues, he's quitting Congress, fed up with his party, his president and the process." In other words: "Tom Davis Gives Up." The article by Peter Baker fashions Davis as "moderate" who is outraged by super-partisanship and the "social conservatives" who have "hijacked" the party. Davis's favorite line about the GOP is, "if we were a Dog Food, they would take us off the shelf." Mocking an average day of meaningless bills before Congress he quips, "yell them about the important work we're doing while Rome burns." Baker (who met Davis 22 years ago) comments: "After 14 years in Congress, Tom Davis is giving up his place in the bucket brigade. Someone else will have to put out the fire. If anyone wants to try." Davis calls the McCain-Palin ticket "a marriage of convenience. What are the negatives? What about her resume? I got through it in about 10 seconds. Does that hurt? He's the guy running on experience...And she's a heartbeat away." She does help with the "change" issue, he adds. And aptly, in light of the start of the baseball playoffs, Davis, 59, cracks: "You know, the Cubs fans used to put the bags over their heads. That's what I feel when you say you're from Congress, because there are just so many things we're not doing." The article points ...

Following my post on the makings of the financial crisis , some folks noted that I didn't really discuss the issues of leverage and derivatives, and how they ended up screwing up Wall Street something fierce -- as, instead, I focused much more simply on the issue of "risk" and sort of swept those details under the rug. I'd been intending to tackle the subject this week, but it looks like Andy Kessler has already done the job for me, with an excellent description of how Wall Street went from helping people trade stocks into a bunch of cowboy hedge fund traders who didn't even realize what they were trading , but knew they were making tons of money -- so they kept borrowing to do more of it. They got suckered by their own Dog Food and ate until they became seriously overstuffed. Still, those profits weren't enough. Their customers were making great money buying Wall Street's derivatives. But why should banks and pension funds and hedge funds have all the fun? What a perfect use for all that capital on their huge balance sheets and cheap financing from low interest rates. Wall Street, en masse, started buying all these high yielding derivatives for their own account. They ate their own Dog Food, if you will. It was the easy trade. Borrow at 3 percent and make 6 percent or 8 percent or 10 percent. They liked it so much, they levered up. Meaning instead of just borrowing a dollar for every two dollars of assets they owned (which by th ...

late. It used to be Palate. This year, I swore, was going to be different. I would write in exhaustive detail about the American Wine and Food Festival . Not only because I'm covering it (as much as you can cover a Food festival after the fact) (and because, really, What Kind Of Food Blogger Do You Think You Are If You Can't Get A Good Blog Post Out Of This), but also because every year I re-remember how much I love this event, more than (it must be said) all the other Food and wine hoo-hahs put together. Not that other Food fests aren't wonderful ( they are ), but beyond the sheer, bludgeoning scale of the AWFF, and the extraordinary amount of care and expense chefs put into their presence each year, what makes me wax goofy is the giddy (goofy is the new giddy!) of the evening. You run into friends and chefs and chef friends and you remember seeing them from the year before and you exult at how good the Pinot was and marvel at the weather and being on the world's most impressive studio backlot and feel lucky and happy to be alive. Really. And even before the stock market made the worst kind of history, that feeling is hard to find and should be preserved at every opportunity. So, I took notes. Sort of. I did my best to collect a card or other remembrance from every booth and stand I sampled. I already know I didn't succeed; worse, my Dog literally ate some of my handiwork. (In addition to consuming half of the Palate Food + Wine busin ...

With the Dog Food recalls as recent as September of 2008 , and the Dog Food scares of 2007 , it's no wonder that pet owners are looking for healthy and safe Food alternatives for their dogs these days. Many Dog owners have decided to go the natural Dog Food route. However, as with any choice, there are advantages and disadvantages to this option.  Not only do you, as a Dog owner, have to choose whether or not to feed natural Dog Food to your pet (a no brainer as far as I'm concerned), but you also have to determine whether you will buy a commercial natural Dog Food or make your pet's meals yourself. ...
