DART: From Thomas and Maria Eisner. A dart to The Ithaca Journal for its coverage of the “hot Dog chow down” on the front page of its July 24th issue. On the September 3 broadcast of San Francisco radio station KSFO's The Lee Rodgers Show , Rogers said of Takeru Kobayashi, six-time winner of the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, New York, "Just eat, eat, eat, and you gain no weight. Oh, there is no justice. God needs to take a hand in this." Co-host Tom Benner, known as "Officer Vic," agreed and added: "Even things out. Wait, that's socialism, I'm sorry. Forget it." Rodgers replied, "Well, you're right, you're right. Well, under Barack Obama, then, it'll probably be done." He continued: "Oh, lordy. Bring us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free. ... Free of the stifling stupidity of liberalism, which disguises slavery as benevolence. That's -- that's the program for the Obama campaign, by the way." Benner replied: "Arbeit macht frei." Rodgers then said, "Yeah. Make more of them dependent on the government." The German phrase "arbeit macht frei" translates to "work makes one free" and was written on the gate at the entrance to Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps. From the September 3 broadcast of KSFO's The Lee Rodgers Show : RODGERS: These people who get involved in these competitive Eating contests, I guess -- and the guy who wins a lot of them is this little Asian guy, Chinese-American [ sic ], I believe, and he is a regular winner of that, like the -- OFFICER VIC: The hot Dog one. Was it a bird? Was it a plane? No, it was 60-pound wonderdog Lacey, jumping in the water to retrieve a ball in front of an audience of several hundred. The 3-year-old golden retriever recently took second place in the kid-handler division of the Ultimate Air Dogs competition at the National Cheery Festival in Traverse City, Mich. Ultimate Air Dogs is one of the premier Dog jumping organizations in the country, drawing spectators from far and wide. Similar to a state fair, the festival offered many other fun activities, including rides and a cherry pie-Eating Contest. About 100 dogs, representing many breeds, competed in several categories, including older dogs and small dogs. The fair-haired pooch Lacey, a first-time entrant, had already proven herself a good jumper. "While vacationing in Michigan, the kids had fun throwing the ball and watching Lacey leap out into the water from the dock to retrieve the ball," said proud owner Ann Jacobs of Weston, mother of Will, 14, and Matt, 12. "We thought she could enter because she loves jumping out into the water." At the competition, Matt held the canine at the beginning of the ramp. Once Will threw what looked like an oblong-shaped tennis ball, Lacy ran down the ramp and retrieved the toy from a 43,000 gallon above-ground pool. In the first round, Lacey jumped 15 feet, 8 inches. With dogged determination in the final round, the hunting Dog jumped 16 feet, 1 inch. "Lacey did a pretty nice jump, ...

Elyse Amend elyse.amend@transcontinental.ca Although it may have seemed otherwise, The Chronicle's office was not home to a hot Dog Eating Contest, and professional competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi was not going to be the guest of honour. Six brave taste testers volunteered to eat five different hot dogs within one lunch hour to determine which one is the Best of the West. All six testers ordered their steamies with their preferred toppings, and scored each finalist on four different attributes: taste, texture, the bun, and the ?good times? factor ? how the three previous attributes came together and, basically, if they would consider going back for seconds. Filed under: Computers , Summer Fun Like us, you're worried about the coming robot invasion . But who isn't? Well, certainly not the artist who recreated a Guantanamo Bay-style waterboarding torture scene with robots out in New York's Coney Island. He's got his 'bots under strict control. The installation, just steps from the location of the famous annual July 4 hot Dog Eating Contest and the Cyclone roller coaster, depicts robots - one as a guard, one as a detainee - in a scene not meant for the faint of heart. At the "Waterboard Thrill Ride," visitors pay a buck to look through a barred window while a hooded robot pours water into the face of an orange jumpsuit-wearing robot, who goes into a series of violent convulsions for 15 seconds. "Robot waterboarding became a way of exploring the issue without doing any harm," artist Steve Powers told the New York Times. "It's putting a unique experience on the table. And it doesn't take a great leap of the imagination to look in there and say: 'That's really what's going on? That's crazy.'" But isn't Coney Island a place for family fun? No worry there, as a sign on the outside shows SpongeBob SquarePants saying "It don't GITMO better!" Maybe don't take the kids.     The Wellington Noon Lions Club will be holding its first International hot Dog buffet and hot Dog Eating Contest from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 14 at the Knights of Columbus building.     Member Tytus Cornejo said the hot Dog benefit will go to the Wellington Lions Club Babe Ruth team and the Babe Ruth league.     The idea for the event, said Cornejo, “just made sense.”     “Nothing goes with baseball like a hot Dog.” he said.     Those wanting to chow down will only have to pay a donation of any amount to gain entry to the more than half a dozen stations for hot dogs.     Each station will feature a different type of hot Dog, said Cornejo, with styles from New York, Chicago, and Coney Island being the highlights of the evening.     Though food always draws a crowd, Cornejo says an element of fun will add to the event.     A coach, player, and member of the Noon Lions Club will square off in a hot Dog Eating Contest to see who has the niftiest nosh gnaw.     Though the coach and player are still to be determined, Cornejo says Noon Lions Club member Robert Mandeville will be the first to attempt a record. Cornejo said the quickest eater will be the winner.     “I watch it on TV, and I guess it’s just like watching golf. The more you watch the better you get.” said Mandeville.     The Lions Club member is torn between whether he should practice for the event or wait until the day of to see how well he will do.     “I don’t kno ...

It may not be in the Olympics — yet — but competitive Eating has become one of the world's fastest-growing sports. Last month, as many as 1.5 million people tuned in to ESPN to watch Joey Chestnut beat Takeru Kobayashi in Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest . According to the Major League Eating spokesman Ryan Nerz: At the big Eating events you have normal guys who get up and do this thing well, beat a bunch of people, and all of a sudden they have a camera shoved in their face. They get a whole new group of friends, a blog, a MySpace page, fans. It very quickly becomes their identity, and it transcends their former identity as a waiter at a pizza restaurant, an accountant, or whatever. The profile of a typical competitive eater has also evolved in recent years. The demographic has changed from the overweight, blue-collar male champions to trimmer, younger, white-collar competitors that include men and women. Many competitors believe in the Belt of Fat theory — that a skinny build allows the stomach to expand with less difficulty than if it were surrounded by a constricting layer of fat tissue. Have you or would you ever try competitive Eating? For some recent records in the world of competitive Eating, read more ...
