I have been watching thesecondweb very closely since it was launched. In the last couple of days, I noticed things slowing down a little. Now I know why. They were suffering a DoS Attack and also, their server wasn't big enough to handle all the traffic. I read this on the blog: ---Quote--- Traffic & Domain Sales EXPLODING (September 29 by Julian) Hi Guys! DDOS attacks have been successfully defeated. Due to the massive press interest this site has received within the past hours, traffic statistics and domain sales have exploded! Over *100 Domain Registrations PER HOUR*, 1000 Users online constantly. This Site's defenitely kicked-off by now! I'll get back to you with more updates soon! Julian ---End Quote--- See: Blog (..and click for the blog). Now, I think that thesecondweb is going to become really big. Give it another month and I think it's going to be up near 50k on Alexa or something. I'd take bets on it but that's illegal I think :) What do you think? Regardless of whether you like the site or personally think it's a good idea, you've got to admit that there's plenty of people that are going to be taking a look. I've been watching Google as well (simply by doing a search for " thesecondweb ", and I can see an explosion of talk about it online. This guy must be making a packet! ...

Multiple flaws have been found in TCP stack, and when exploited, this will lead to massive DoS Attack. Two Researchers in Sweden found this and there is no patch for this yet. The discovery follows a test using a port scanner called ‘Unicornscan’, which Lee and senior security researcher Jack Louis created. “Jack found some anomalies in [...] ...

An anonymous reader writes with news that ArtistDirect, the company who acquired MediaDefender, has launched another company called PiCast for the purpose of P2P video distribution. The reader says: "This is a strange twist for a company which last year set up a video-sharing site called Miivi in an attempt to entrap users uploading copyrighted content, and was caught launching a DoS Attack against Revision3, which we discussed earlier this year." In playing with various routers I really haven't found any reason to be running an SPI firewall at home. The NAT firewall seems to do a fine job by itself and I see advice to disable the SPI to increase the stability of those routers that have it anyways. The SPI firewall in the ZyWall devices seems quite good compared to the flaky consumer grade implementations and I can see a large company wanting the peace of mind it brings - but hey, worst case a DoS Attack on my home wouldn't be more than a minor annoyance. Does anybody out there have any real experience of a SPI router protecting them better than an ancient P-314 boat anchor grade router in a home environment? :D ...

Internet infrastructure vendors are working on patches for a set of security flaws that could help hackers knock servers offline with very little effort. The security community has been buzzing about the bugs since Tuesday, when security researcher Robert Hansen discussed the problem on his blog . [ Learn how to secure your systems with Roger Grimes' Security Adviser blog and newsletter , both from InfoWorld. ] Technical details on the vulnerabilities have not been released, but the security experts who discovered the problem, Robert Lee and Jack Louis of security vendor Outpost24, say that they can knock Windows, Linux, embedded systems and even firewalls offline with what's known as a denial of service (DoS) Attack. The flaws lie in the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) software used by these systems to send data over the Internet. Lee and Louis first discussed the problem last week at a conference in Amsterdam, and many of the affected vendors are now working on patching the issue with help from the Finnish national Computer Emergency Response Team , said Lee, who spent most of Wednesday and Thursday explaining the issue. "The vendors who are capable and responsible for creating solutions are in the loop," said Lee, Outpost24's chief security officer. "The public message here is 'Chill out, the people who need to be involved are involved.'" He could not say how long it would take to fix the problem. In a state ...

Ahir publicava la primera referència que havia trobat sobre un suposat DoS que podia tombar les implementacions de TCP/IP. Posteriorment he trobat altres referències (" New Denial-of-Service Attack is a Killer ", " TCP is fundamentally borked " i " DoS Attack reveals (yet another) crack in net's core "). Avui he trobat un comentari de Fyodor, l'autor del Nmap: Explaining the “New" TCP Resource Exhaustion Denial of Service (DoS) Attack on bàsicament indica que és un problema ja conegut de fa força temps (abril del 2000) i criticant la difusió que se n'ha fet. ...

The security community is abuzz about critical vulnerabilities discovered in the TCP/IP protocol that underly the Internet. This comes on the heels of a blog posting by security researcher Robert Hansen in which he outlines some dire consequences of these flaws. Technical details have not been released to the public at this point, though the experts who discovered the problem--Robert Lee and Jack Louis from security vendor Outpost 2--say that they were able to knock-out Windows, Linux, embedded systems and even firewalls. Indeed, targeted machines could remain disabled even after the cessation of the denial of service (DoS) Attack. As a result, even taking out an entire data center is a plausibility, given that the issue allows a system to mount a successful DoS Attack with very little bandwidth. For more on this issue: - check out this article from PC World ...

Luego de leer en Microsiervos sobre las remakes, comics pasados a cine, y las x partes nuevas de películas viejas, me puse a buscar un poquito más y armé esta lista buscando en IDMB.
