A Minnesota judge has been accused by a state disciplinary body of referring at least 19 Divorce mediation cases to his personal attorney, in exchange for a $64,000 discount on the legal bill for his own Divorce. His ex-wife then reportedly dropped the dime on his alleged misconduct. "In 2004, Judge Timothy Blakely was allegedly cash-strapped by his Divorce and owed more than $100,000 in fees to the St. Paul-based law firm of Collins, Buckley, Sauntry and Haugh," reports the Pioneer Press. "A complaint filed by the Minnesota Board on Judicial Standards maintains that Blakely then began to appoint Christine… ...

From NBC's Aram Roston [from Anchorage] and Amna Nawaz [from Washington, D.C.] The GOP candidate for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, may be facing yet another ethics investigation back in her home state of Alaska. An ethics complaint obtained by NBC News was filed yesterday by the police officers' union in Alaska, requesting a probe into possible wrongdoing by the governor or her office. It was brought on behalf of state trooper, Mike Wooten, the ex-brother in law of Palin, who is at the center of the "Troopergate" scandal. The complaint alleges that the governor or her staff may have have improperly disclosed information from Wooten's personnel records. The complaint alleges "criminal penalties may apply." "It seems obvious to us somebody has improperly accessed [Wooten's] personnel file," John Cyr, director of the union that filed the complaint, told NBC News. The McCain-Palin campaign today launched a spirited defense when contaced by NBC News. They say the personnel files were not protected. A campaign source says Wooten himself had previously signed a waiver allowing a Divorce Lawyer to obtain his personnel records. The campaign then sent a copy of that waiver to NBC News, which reads, "I hereby waive any privilege I may have to said information to said attorneys." ...( read more ) ...

The summer may be over, but the spate of exciting divorces has not ended yet! Today's Post tells us that Blaine and Robert Trump, brother of Donald, are finally getting divorced; they filed in Manhattan Supreme Court yesterday after three years of separation. This is going to be a good one because (a) they have no prenuptial agreement, (b) Blaine has hired Robert Cohen, the Lawyer who represented Christie Brinkley in her recent Divorce case and who was responsible for making Peter Cook weep on the stand about his "private, secret" masturbation habits, and (c) because, duh, they're Trumps , and as a source tells the Post , the trial is sure to bring "all of the expected media circus that a Trump Divorce brings." A circus ! Now that would be fun. Like if they really made a thing out of it, and instead of bailiffs they had ringmasters with long twirly mustaches and capes announcing the witnessess and along with testimony, they'd have Cirque du Soleil acrobats do interpretive dances of Robert's alleged infidelities. Blaine could ride in on an elephant and there would be vendors on the front steps of the courthouse selling massive swirls of cotton candy, which would later appear in the lede of a Times article about the trial as a metaphor for how these public spectacles are decaying civilization as sugar rots teeth. Whatever. We'd truck it up to Long Island for that . BLAINE TRUMP BATTLE HEATS UP [NYP] ...

With the exciting news that Brad Pitt has won his second best actor chalice today at the Venice Film Festival—for what the judging committee deemed his "indomitable spirit both on and off the screen, his effortless embodiment of the American masculine ideal, and the way sucking up to him will facilitate future access to his impossibly fertile and glamorous life partner, Angelina Jolie"—we thought it time to finally time to take a look at the movie which ushered him to victory. We speak, of course, of the Coen brothers' Burn After Reading , which had its world premiere tonight at the festival. If Pitt, as Javier Bardem did before him, could win top accolades with a hairstyle this ridiculous looking , then this truly must have been another masterwork from the sibling geniuses. Let's see what the critics are saying. (And yes, spoilers ensue.) · The Guardian uses the word "triumph" and gives it four stars out of five, calling it "a tightly wound, slickly plotted spy comedy that couldn't be in bigger contrast" to No Country for Old Men , but that the Coens film it most closely resembles is "the Divorce-Lawyer comedy Intolerable Cruelty ." Everyone gets a chance to shine comically, but "Pitt, in fact, gets the best of the funny stuff, [though] has by some way the least screen time of all the principal cast." [ The Guardian ] · Counterpoint! Variety hated it. Calling it a "dark goofball comedy about assorted doofuses in Washington, D.C.," Bu ...

So, now we're supposed to believe that Sarah Palin is actually more experienced at executive decision-making than Barack Obama and Joe Biden combined. Heck, she's actually commanded American troops! She has kept Alaska safe from marauding Russian forces just a few miles away. The McCain campaign was pressed by CNN to answer a simple question: Can you name one example of when Sarah Palin has used her executive powers to command or direct Alaska's National Guard? Just one. To punish CNN for having the gall to ask that question -- and ask it again because they didn't get an answer the first time -- McCain decided he won't do an interview with CNN's Larry King. (The campaign never answered the question.) But here's an example of how Sarah Palin used her executive authority: When she, her husband and other family members pressured Alaska's state public safety commissioner to fire a state trooper(her brother in law) who was involved in a contentious Divorce with her sister, the commissioner refused. He apparently chose to let the legal system and the law run its course. But that wasn't good enough. Sarah Palin fired the commissioner. The evidence against her for abusing her executive authority are so strong that the Alaskan legislature voted to conduct an ethics investigation. She has hired a Lawyer. I guess that's the kind of executive experience McCain thinks we need in the White House. ...

Sarah Palin could be facing another investigation in relation to Trooper-Gate. NBC News reports that the police officer's union of Alaska has filed an ethics complaint on behalf of Mike Wooten, the trooper who was embroiled in a dispute with the Palin family, and who the governor is alleged to have attempted to have fired. According to NBC News: The complaint alleges that the governor or her staff may have have improperly disclosed information from Wooten's personnel records. The complaint alleges "criminal penalties may apply." The union argues that recordings of a phone conversation involving Palin-aide Frank Bailey -- released last month as part of the Attorney General's own Trooper-Gate probe -- suggested that Wooten's records were accessed improperly. In response, the McCain-Palin campaign told NBC News that the files were not protected, and that Wooten himself had signed a waiver allowing a Divorce Lawyer to gain access to his personnel records. They added that Todd Palin, the governor's husband, was the source of information for Bailey, and that the information came from Wooten's Divorce proceedings. In other words, the McCain campaign is saying that Todd Palin gathered damaging information on Mike Wooten by looking through his Divorce proceedings, then passed it on to an aide to the governor, who later used it to try to have Wooten fired. That may or may not be legal, but it doesn't exactly sound like the kind of ethical, ...

Hayden Panatierre isn't the only one who has a dad who can get arrested. Hilary Duff's pop Bob Duff has been ordered to spend 10 days in jail for contempt of court in Texas, the AP reports. Judge Thomas Stanbury had Bob taken into custody in a Houston court Wednesday after determining Duff had violated an injunction against selling assets without court approval. He's in the middle of a nasty Divorce with wife Susan, and sold off some stocks worth a mere $367, 537 last month. Stanbury ordered Bob Duff must pay that amount into a court repository. Bob's Lawyer said he would appeal. As far as Hilary is concerned, the judge ordered Bob should pay Susan $12,500 for her 21st birthday party on Sept. 28. That's a lot of cookies 'n' creme. And that's only half of the $25,000 Susan said she wanted to buy Hilary a present and throw her a party. How dare she! That's how much Haylie's party should cost; Hilary's should be at least twice that. [Photo: Getty Images] Source ...

Saying nothing can cost a lot. Matthew Marino is about to find out how much. Marino is a Lawyer and the brother of Daniel Marino, the chief financial officer of the Bayou Group hedge fund, which collapsed in scandal in 2005. Daniel Marino and C.E.O. Samuel Israel III admitted their fraud shortly thereafter and were sentenced to long terms in federal prison earlier this year. Turns out that Matthew Marino helped his brother conceal the fraud. Prosecutors say that he helped set up and run the phony auditing firm Bayou used to persuade investors that their money was safe. He also helped to hide the fraud from lawyers representing Israel's ex-wife in a Divorce proceeding. Marino acknowledged his guilt yesterday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lisa Margaret Smith in federal court in White Plains, New York. She is scheduled to sentence him on December 4. Marino faces as much as three years in prison, a fine of $250,000, and the prospect of being on the hook to return as much as $300 million to investors. by Mark Stein ...

by Eric Umansky , ProPublica - Yesterday, we detailed how Gov. Sarah Palin’s lawyers have been trying to slow-roll the Alaska legislature’s probe of “Troopergate.” Well, the effort appears to be in high gear. Palin has of course been accused of firing Alaska’s top cop for refusing to do the governor’s personal bidding and fire a trooper who was involved in a nasty Divorce with Palin’s sister. (Here’s our backgrounder on the scandal .) As we wrote yesterday, a Palin aide stood up investigators and didn’t show up to give scheduled testimony. A Lawyer for the aide, who had been recorded on a call pressing for the trooper to be fired, explained that his client didn’t have to show up since the “governor’s office was contesting the jurisdiction of the Legislature to handle this matter.” Read more... ...
