All the safety measures we have taken to protect our children have produced such harmful effects as increasing the rate of childhood obesity; in fact, one in six children in America is obese, and many of them face a lifetime of chronic illness, says the Center for Disease Control.  However, the situation could cure itself if children would just get off the sofa!  But how do we lure children outside?  One key Attraction is risk, says Philip Howard, chairman of Common Good.  Risk is fun, he continues, at least the moderate risks that were common in prior generations.  Today, America has stripped all the fun out of playtime: There is nothing left in playgrounds that would attract the interest of a child over the age of four. Exercise in schools is carefully programmed, when it exists at all. Some schools have even banned tag and running at recess! Little Leagues forbid sliding into base, some towns ban sledding and high Diving boards are history. I have a problem with rules not being followed, IF indeed the gymnast was under 16 that is cheating no questions asked. I have two issues in regards to the latest "age" controversy: 1. The screening process before the competition begins. Granted you can only prevent so much but focus on the system that screens the competitors. 2. The other issue I raise is "who cares" how old they are, open it up and let anyone participate. If your Country wants to put an eight year on the Diving platform then so be it. It all comes down to the parents responsibility to how their children should be exposed. We don't cap how young an actor or artist can be. The parents for that 16 year old or 8 year old child are going to do what they feel is best for their child. They have to live with their actions and what affect it will have on their child. We have blogged about the current trend of commercial aquariums that allow "divers" into their enclosures for face to face encounters with sharks. Like it or not this is a trend-and a poor one at that. Commercial aquaria were never constructed and designed as underwater public encounter spaces. In 98% of them-these for profit public encounters-are an afterthought. Basically these aquaria are becoming hybrid organizations at best. Why not build a state of the art public dive encounter site complete with sharks, safety and education? Seems like a far fetched idea? We're closer than ever . Maybe you have more than one - so add another later?* *For starters*, I really loved visiting Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, back in 1988. The world's most southerly town (there are a few settlements further south - but only a handful of inhabitants each), it fronts on the Beagle Channel, backed by the tail end of the Andes. Even in November (late southern spring) there was snow on the not-so-tall peaks, and flurries of sleet. For me the great Attraction was the wildlife, especially the birds. A tourist cat out into the harbour, and up the channel eastwards was great - seals, albatrosses, petrels, storm-petrels, Diving-petrels, steamer ducks, penguins (both Magellanic and Gentoo), sheathbills, cormorants - fantastic. The national park nearby (and a cheap car rental) made for a great time. Twenty years on, and many countries later, it is still one of my favourite spots. ...

Who don't love Harper Goff legendary Nautilus? Nobody, probably...and this is why today you have on Disney and more a new photographic tribute to DLP's "Les Mystères du Nautilus" Attraction. This is an interesting video that appeared on the American television show "60 Minutes" back in 2006. It shows how old merchant vessels are beached and cut up in Bangladesh. Ship breaking is a dirty, filthy job, done by the poorest of the poor. Conditions are somewhat improved now thanks to this story, but this is how the vessels of commerce go to die in the east. These old ships are filled with asbestos, chemicals, fuel and other contaminants that just wind up on the beach and in the ocean. This struck me as a sharp contrast to the conversion of the American aircraft carrier USS Oriskany, which was so carefully sanitized prior to sinking as a man-made reef and Diving Attraction. Somehow, I dont think the 11,000 TEU, 170,000 metric ton, M/V Emma Maersk will be driven on any beach when her trading days are over. Add Freightdawg.com to... ...
