Rihanna is back for another performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. along with Pink, Paramore and TI. Is Rear Window better than Disturbia? Well, the clothes certainly were. From the “what took them so long?” files, Yahoo! Movies reports that the makers of the 2007 film Disturbia have been named in a lawsuit claiming that the film copied the 1954 Hitchcock classic Rear Window and the 1942 story by Cornell Woolrich on which it is based. Steven Spielberg, Dreamworks, and Paramount are the targets of the suit. By the way, I use the word “claiming” in the above lengthy sentence only as a legal nicety. The similarities between the plots of the two films is so identical you almost wonder what the filmmakers of the Disturbia were thinking. To wit: Disturbia is about a housebound kid (Shia LaBeouf) who spies on a neighbor he suspects of being a killer; Rear Window is about a housebound photographer (James Stewart) who spies on a neighbor he suspects of being a killer. See? When Disturbia came out, everyone–reviewers, audiences, commenters on blogs–commented on the identical stories. So you have to wonder–did the people behind Disturbia think: a) no one would notice; I mean, after all, who watches Hitchcock anymore? b) the copyright had lapsed and it was too much bother to ask legal to check it out c) it was an homage and anyone left alive involved in the making of Rear Window should be flattered.
