Proposition 5 on next month’s ballot asks California votes whether to set aside almost $500 million for drug treatment programs targeted to nonviolent offenders. Its supporters say the measure would address addiction, one of the main reasons so many people are behind bars. Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley shared with KPCC’s Patt Morrison his opinion that Prop 5 is one of the most dangerous propositions to ever make it to the ballot. By FRED CONTRADA fcontrada@repub.com AMHERST - A 2-year-old toddler was struck and killed by a school bus near the intersection of Summer Street and Montague Road while seeing his sister off to school this morning. Police were summoned to Summer Street around 8 a.m. in response to a report that a child had been hit by a bus. The incident occurred near a bus stop en route to the Mark's Meadow Elementary School. The boy's sister and mother were at the scene of the accident, according to Northwestern Deputy First Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Dunphy Farris. The child was pronounced dead at the scene, said Farris. The District Attorney's office identified the child as Abraham Espinoza, who turned 2 on Aug. 19. There was no further identification.   Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone announced recently that Reading resident Daniel Harren was hired as an assistant District Attorney for the Middlesex District Attorney’s office’s fall 2008 class. Harren, a graduate of Westfield State and Suffolk University Law School, will be working as an assistant District Attorney in District Court. Prior to joining the Middlesex District Attorney’s office, Harren worked as a student prosecutor in Malden District Court. While there, Harren was assigned cases such as motor vehicle offenses and drug possession and distribution charges.
