According to The Hollywood Reporter , the Walt Disney Corporation will be funding two research labs at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, and at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich in Switzerland. The Pure press party wasn’t much to look at – a huge dark room with some faux Italian statues and sweet-looking bikes you couldn’t touch – but that might’ve been Disney Interactive Studios’s plot all along, because compared to the party, Pure itself looked awesome. This is due in no small part to the visuals. Each track in Pure is loaded with smooth-looking graphics and lush backgrounds that almost distract you from racing. The bikes themselves don’t look half-bad, either. Though there are no licensed models, each part of the bike is licensed and if that means anything to you, you can look forward to cobbling together some pretty sweet custom bikes with some of the best parts; there must be more than a thousand combos you could come up with. Bikes either skew towards fast racing models, or slower trick bikes. An auto-build-your-own mode lets you get as crazy with customization as you can stand without having to go through each and every bolt and frame choice. On to the actual gameplay. We were treated to the multiplayer experience – not a great idea because they pit journalists against the production team so needless to say, we got slaughtered. But at least we got to see most of the seven tracks in the game while getting our asses handed to us. Paramount Pictures, the Viacom-owned movie studio, has made its first gaming related acquisition: it has bought Seattle-based game developer ScreenLife , the creator of the popular DVD game "Scene It?". Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but last week SeattlePI first broke the story and mentioned that the deal is "for less than $100 million". Screenlife will continue to operate as a standalone company, but will report into Paramount Digital Entertainment. Scene was launched in 2002 as a series of video-based trivia games..it has since sold about 15 million titles on the DVD, mobile, VOD and video game platforms. The company has over 25 DVD game titles on the market. Screenlife raised $7 million in angel financing in 2003, and a total of about $10 million. For Paramount, this is part of the trend as gaming is becoming a big part of movie Studios including Warner Bros and Disney ( NYSE: DIS ). In March, Paramount announced the expansion of its Interactive unit to include games, and appointed two executives in charge of the unit. In February, the studio formed Paramount Mobile Entertainment, to develop the studio's mobile opportunities and alternative distribution models. It just announced developing a series of comics based on films from its catalog.
