Delshaune Flipp, a union clerk who works in the Rockland town accountant’s office, is suing the town after being denied a position last year as the administrative assistant in the assessor’s office. Flipp believes she was denied the position because she is black, and last week she pushed the matter further in the process by filing a complaint with the U.S. District Court. Her original complaint was filed with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) in Boston in 2007. In the complaint, she alleged that the job she was seeking became open in January of 2007, and despite being the only union worker who applied for the position, and despite her previous clerical background, she was denied the job. Several calls to various offices at Rockland Town Hall seeking comment were not returned, though reached by phone Wednesday evening, selectmen chair James Simpson said he is aware of the complaint and he and the rest of the board of selectmen plan to review the matter during an upcoming meeting. “This has been ongoing. This is now her way to move forward a little bit,” Simpson said. “It’s still under investigation.” A Rockland resident, Flipp filed the complaint against the Rockland board of assessors, members of which are Harvey Smith, James McKinnon, Jillian Smith and Joe Gibbons.
