Heard the big news? No, not the Great Government Bailout of 2008. A real-live capitalist, using his own money and moxie, racked up the first successful flight of a rocket he's been developing to change the game in space. The dude is Elon Musk, of Pay-Pal fame and fortune, who has been picking away at the not insubstantial barriers to entry into the commercial space arena. "That was freakin' awesome," Musk said after the launch Sunday night. The Falcon 1 booster lifted off from Omelek Island at Kwajalein Atoll in the central Pacific Ocean. It was Musk's fourth attempt to reach orbit. The battle is far from over. With a successful launch on the books, Musk told me in an interview last week that he's going to make a bid for ferrying Astronauts to and from the space station after the shuttle is retired. Technical know-how, Musk has now demonstrated. As for the political battles to come, the challenges may just be beginning. Check back at space.Discovery.com on Monday for an exclusive Q&A with Musk. Here's a really good account of the launch on SpaceflightNow.com . And here's a Discovery News story about what this launch might mean for NASA and the U.S. space program ...

This is exactly why we send Astronauts to risk their life to service Hubble : in a paper published last week in the Astrophysical Journal, scientists detail the Discovery of a new unidentified object in the middle of nowhere. I don't know about you, but when a research paper conclusion says "We suggest that the transient may be one of a new class" I get a chill of oooh-aaahness down my spine. Especially when after a hundred days of observation, it disappeared from the sky with no explanation. Get your tinfoil hats out, because it gets even weirder. The object also appeared out of nowhere. It just wasn't there before. In fact, they don't even know where it is exactly located because it didn't behave like anything they know. Apparently, it can't be closer than 130 light-years but it can be as far as 11 billion light-years away. It's not in any known galaxy either. And they have ruled out a supernova too. It's something that they have never encountered before. In other words: they don't have a single clue about where or what the heck this thing is. The shape of the light curve is inconsistent with microlensing. In addition to being inconsistent with all known supernova types, is not matched to any spectrum in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey database. The only thing the astronomers—working on the Supernova Cosmology Project—can tell is that it appeared all of the sudden in the direction of a cluster with the catchy name of CL 1432.5+3332 ...

Gavin sends us "An article that I wrote for Wired (and Playboy) a few years back that never ran in either magazine. I just put it up on my website and it seems right up BB's alley: A rundown of futurism, going through nine sets of predictions on what the world would be like by the year 2000, from Megatrends (1988) to Glimpses of the Future (1888--and an amazing amount of correct material!), including best/worst predictions (my favorite: two Astronauts will have a gunfight in outer space over a woman) and accuracy rates for each futurist." Most of the futurists I read focused on the rise and fall of governments, and especially, the progress of technology and the sciences. The future of art and literature got short shrift, as did sex and religion. At first, I thought this was because too many of the predictors considered their readership to be drawn from the business community. But that didn’t wash: an accurate prediction of fashion trends, or societal attitudes towards sex, would be immensely valuable to any savvy investor or corporate type. Would-be prophets avoid arts and entertainment because they seem too difficult to pin down, too trend-driven. Science provides the illusion that progress occurs in an orderly fashion: Mendel’s pea-plants to the Discovery of DNA to the Human Genome Project to a cure for cancer, all in a tidy line. Welcome to the Future (Thanks, Gavin!)... ...

By ‘eck. There’s trouble at t’Hubble Old and weary, the Hubble space telescope was set to get a new lease of life on October 14th, when Astronauts from space shuttle Atlantis planned to fit out the 18-year old telescope with lots of new kit, and repair numerous broken bits. But then, at the last minute, Hubble stopped sending data from its data formatter and the telescope put itself into ‘safe mode’ and stopped work. To fix this bug would require expertise that those Astronauts charged with carrying out the repairs don’t yet have. As a consequence the Shuttle trip to Hubble has been delayed until February next year at the earliest – which is when Discovery, the other shuttle, is going to be ready to act as a back up in case of emergency. The Astronauts were supposed to be going to visit Hubble for 11 days, to do 5 spacewalks. The telescope does have back up modes, but they haven’t been used for years says the Houston Chronicle . The story has been widely picked up ( LA TImes , New York Times , BBC – it seems that the telescope that has been sending us stunning images from space for the past 18 years has a special place in the hearts of the public. Highly Recommended The Show: I may have missed the whole space race of the 1960's, but I have always been fascinated by it. NASA's space program, flights to the moon and anything involving Astronauts continue to hold my interest long into adulthood. If there's a shuttle flight, I'm watching it, and if there's news regarding some Discovery made by the Hubble Telescope, you'd better believe that I'm paying attention. Because of this I make it a point to watch shows such as Earth to the Moon and many of the documentary series involving space. The latest title released by Discovery, When We Left Earth , just so happens to be one of the best ever put together. Originally airing in June of 2008, When We Left Earth is a in depth look at the NASA program from its brave first s... Read the entire review ...

Firstly it shows a UFO near the earths atmosphere and secondly it is being attacked by a Star-Wars styled missile defense base from good old Planet Earth. The amazing Discovery Channel series When We Left Earth comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray today, and it's a mindblowing look at four decades of off-world exploration. Simultaneously grand and intimate, the series lets you glimpse just how harrowing and freaky an astronaut's life could be back during the peak of the space race. We've got three exclusive clips and some gorgeous stills, below. For some reason each one of these clips starts out with the same intro, but they really are totally different. Especially scary is the one where a design flaw meant that Astronauts couldn't use their spare air capsules, and they didn't have enough oxygen for three Astronauts otherwise. The Astronauts had to build an "adaptor" to fit a square peg to a round hole, using duct tape and an old sock, while suffocation loomed in their near future. Special features on the DVD and Blu-Ray include an extra four hours of footage, a rare interview with first man on the moon Neil Armstrong, and a 14-page booklet with a timeline of major NASA events. You can order the DVD here and the Blu-Ray here . ...
