Here's a press release with details of just one of the many faith-based groups responding to the needs created by Hurricane Ike: CHILDREN'S Disaster SERVICES CONTINUES CARE FOR CHILDREN IN TEXAS SHELTERS AFTER HURRICANE IKE Oct. 3, 2008 (New Windsor, MD) -- Children's Disaster Services volunteers are continuing to work in shelters in Texas, caring for children of families affected by Hurricane Ike. Currently, 19 trained and certified childcare volunteers are at work in two American Red Cross shelters: the Galveston Island Tent Shelter (5200 Avenue North, Galveston) and a shelter in the Auchan area of Houston (6059 South Loop East, off of 610). Since Sept. 15, Children's Disaster Services has deployed at least 48 volunteers to American Red Cross shelters in Texas. The volunteers have set up childcare areas within the shelters to provide children respite from the experience of evacuation and shelter housing. As of Oct. 1, at least 950 child care contacts have been made during the response to Ike. Children's Disaster Services is part of the Church of the Brethren Disaster Ministries, and is the oldest and largest nationwide organization specializing in children's Disaster related needs. It was established in 1980 (www.childrensdisasterservices.org). The program places teams of trained and certified volunteers in shelters and other centers where families receive aid following disasters, at the request of FEMA and the American Red Cro ...

PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Distribution! Recently several island states in the Caribbean suffered immense devastation, the result of two major hurricanes. Worst hit was Cuba, where in late August Hurricane Gustav, considered to be the most destructive of the last sixty years, ravaged both cities and countryside. Its early stages flooded much of eastern Cuba; it then grew in strength and size and demolished the special municipality of the Isle of Youth and invaded Pinar del Rio, Cuba's most westerly province, with wind gusts to 350 kmh raking both Havana and Matanzas. But ten days later worse was yet to afflict this brave island and its people: still reeling from Gustav, Cuba was to lose even more of its infrastructure as Hurricane Ike battered its way from one end of the island to the other, leaving an even greater panorama of destruction. It was as if two wars had been fought within two weeks: parked cars and buses sent flying; roads washed out and bridges collapsed; cisterns and tin roofs ripped from buildings; houses, schools, clinics, and recreation centres leveled; trees uprooted and rivers frothing in torrents and overflowing their banks; communication towers, high tension wires, and telephone lines lying in tangles on the wet ground; family gardens smashed flat; seawater pushed more than five kilometers inland by storm surges. Accounts of large-scale damage are even more disturbing: Cuba’s agricultural sector is in ruins – tob ...

DuPage County is making efforts to correct misinformation and answer frequently-asked questions about recovery from last month’s flooding. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has set up a Disaster recovery center to help residents whose homes were damaged by the storms. The center is located at the county administration building, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton. For more information on the center, read our story here . Here are some of the most common questions from people dealing with Disaster recovery: Q I got help from the American Red Cross. Can I still apply to FEMA if I need assistance? A Yes, you should apply to FEMA. Think of the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and other voluntary agencies as your immediate helpers with food, clothing, blankets and shelter during the first days of the Disaster. FEMA is your long-term recovery partner with rental assistance, housing repair money and grants to meet other serious needs caused by the Disaster. Q I don’t really want a loan. Do I still need to fill out the federal Small Business Administration application when I receive it? A Yes, fill it out and return it. You may qualify for a FEMA grant to replace your personal property damaged in the Disaster. If you don’t complete and return the SBA loan application, you may not be considered for further FEMA assistance. Q I have insurance. Is there other help available to me? A Yes. Although insurance should be your main source o ...
