Gov. Deval Patrick has asked the U.S. Department of Commerce to open the door for federal Disaster assistance for about 1,100 commercial shellfishermen and 35 shellfish farmers in the state affected by this year’s red tide outbreak. The Patrick administration on Friday asked the Department of Commerce to declare a commercial fishery failure following the closure of more than 600,000 acres of shellfish beds in the state at various times this spring and summer. The Patrick administration estimates that the direct impact to shellfishermen totaled more than $1.5 million in lost revenue. But overall losses to shellfish processors, retailers and other related businesses may have totaled nearly $7 million. “The closures have caused (an) economic impact on certain Massachusetts communities where shellfishing is a major component of annual income for some fishermen,” Patrick wrote in his letter to Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez. “This Disaster assistance is requested to help sustain shellfish fishing and prevent a local collapse of the industry.” The state typically sees an annual outbreak of red tide in the Gulf of Maine, but the outbreak levels were particularly strong this year, requiring the state Division of Marine Fisheries to temporarily close many shellfish areas on the North Shore, the South Shore, Boston Harbor and Cape Cod. ...
