Approximately 4,000 Americans die and 20,000 are injured in fires each year. The risk of death or injury from fire is even greater for people with physical, mental or sensory Disabilities. Many of these deaths are the result of failed emergency escapes, and might have been prevented through planning and preparedness. The Los Angeles Fire Department encourages people with Disabilities, their caregivers and all Americans to learn about special precautions that can protect those with special needs. People with Disabilities - and those around them, must always be mindful of physical and other limitations that can impair quick and appropriate action in an emergency. Those living with Disabilities should be aware of the special fire and other danger warning devices that are available to meet their unique needs. For example, smoke alarms with a vibrating pad or flashing light are available for the deaf or hard of hearing. While the warning features of smoke alarms may be specific to individual needs, the placement of these devices - at a minimum, echo those suggested for every household: Have a properly functioning smoke alarm in every sleeping room -and- in the hallway directly adjacent to those rooms. If sleeping rooms are on an upper level, a smoke alarm should also be installed in the center of the ceiling directly above the interior stairway. It's best to have smoke alarms on every level of a home. Make sure your smoke alarms are tested ...

A quick update on the accessibility of Castlegar's Sandman Inn ...resulting from a mis-forwarded email (ooops!) that sent the hotel manager to my previous post, the following room improvements were in process, as of Friday: New bars (3 in total) have been put into the washroom. Done Oct 7th New moveable shower head is being put in today! Covering for pipes under sink is being put in today! Purchased a tub transfer bench And, from my understanding, the Sandman is also interested in having SPARC BC (Social Planning and Research Council of British Columbia) conduct an accessibility audit. I would like to add that I did not request permission to post this update. However, I do feel the Sandman Inn deserves acknowledgement for acting promptly in improving the room's accessibility once they became aware of the issue. If only other establishments would respond as promptly!  I would welcome the opportunity to interview the hotel manager so that he can share any lessons learned from the process, and I'd gladly post updated room photos to show what improvements have been made. For change to occur, there needs to be a will for change. The Sandman Inn's willingness is encouraging. People with Disabilities volunteer for many of the same reasons as those without Disabilities — to forge new relationships, gain personal satisfaction and social status, hone marketable skills, and for networking opportunities. This effective practice, excerpted with permission from an article by Angela Novak Amado, and published in the online edition of Impact: Feature Issue on Volunteerism by Persons with Developmental Disabilities, addresses how program directors and supervisors can enhance the volunteer experience for people with Disabilities, allowing them to gain the most from their efforts, and subsequently reaping the ultimate benefits for the communities in which they serve. ...

As an excavating machine tore into the foundation of the old Town Common gazebo Thursday  to make way for a replacement structure, neighbor Sheila Zarba-Campbell laid claim to a little piece of history. "Every day we look out and see the gazebo and it's just beautiful," the Park Street homeowner said, staking out her claim to one of the landmark's old benches for posterity. "I just can't wait for the new one to go up." The old gazebo was put up roughly 20 years ago in an effort spearheaded by local World War II vet Ernie Fecteau, who has since died. More recently, supporters found that the wood had begun to rot and decided to replace the structure, discovering that the scope of the project required them to install a 52-foot long ramp for those with Disabilities. Wishing to keep the aesthetics of the town's main gathering spot in place, the Friends of the Common decided to take out the old octagon-shaped foundation as well, allowing the gazebo to be lowered and the ramp shortened. Thursday, brothers Dan and Tom McIntyre used an excavator loaned from Capobianco & Son of Hopkinton to pull down the gazebo and smash the concrete base, taking care to save decorative granite slabs quarried in town. They were still at it into the evening, having filled four dumpsters donated by E.L. Harvey & Sons. Relying entirely on private funds, the Friends of the Common hopes to have the new foundation laid by winter, with the gazebo completed with ...
