In the New York Daily News , John Marzulli reports: The man who put away John Gotti, baby-sat Sammy (Bull) Gravano, raided an Al Qaeda Bomb factory and helped uncover the NBA betting scandal says Tim Donaghy told the truth. Philip Scala, the recently retired FBI supervisory special agent in charge of the Gambino squad, which uncovered Donaghy's scheme of betting on basketball games he had officiated, said he believes the disgraced referee's claims that other refs were Dirty. That's one of those moments when, if you work in PR for the NBA, you might swallow a little hard. Scala is experienced talking to and assessing criminals, and, most importantly he has a highly respected name that's he's willing to use in the paper. That's not good if you're the NBA. The rest of the article is well worth a read, and it's certainly interesting. Somewhat mercifully for the NBA, at this point the evidence appears not to go far beyond Scala's gut feeling, based on having spent time with Donaghy, and being aware of much more of this investigation than has been public. There is no smoking gun piece of evidence. I also found this passage interesting: ... when prosecutors wrote a letter to the federal judge outlining Donaghy's cooperation, defense lawyer John Lauro was outraged that the information about other NBA referees and officials had been omitted simply because no criminal charges were brought. "Donaghy, for some reason, looked up to me," Scala s ...

Who would have thought that voting for the young, relatively inexperienced black guy would be the safe choice? In the most-important decision that a Presidential candidate can make McCain has proven yet again that he is erratic, impulsive , and unfit for command. We now know that the Rove machine insisted that he choose Romney, while McCain stubbornly insisted on Lieberman. They then seemed to have all settled on Pawlenty, when for some reason McCain at the last minute chatted with Governor Palin for fifteen minutes about ANWAR and voila'!, McCain suddenly decided that Palin would make an excellent potential leader of the free world. We've already had eight years of someone shooting from the hip, using their gut instead of reason, looking into Putin's eyes and seeing a good man. The result has been that we Americans are more vulnerable and isolated than ever in our history. McCain and his volcanic temper, erratic judgment and rash decision making are a danger to the Republic. Just imagine life under McCain. The calls comes in at 3 a.m. saying that a Dirty Bomb was just detonated in downtown Omaha. Early intel lays the blame on Iranian-backed Hezbollah. "Unleash a dozen cruise missiles on Tehran," barks McCain. An hour later it's discovered that the Dirty Bomb was actually the product of Pakistani extremists loosely connected with al Qaeda. Tehran initially retaliates by blowing up several of our embassies in the region killing hun ...

So-called " Dirty bombs " are designed to spread significant amounts of radioactive dust and debris throughout a populated area. But working out what kind of radiation dose the local people have received is a difficult business, not least because this may involve testing tens or hundreds of thousands of them. That is a problem because current techniques for estimating radiation dosage rely on blood samples that can only be taken by trained individuals. This severely limits the rate at which people can be tested. The tests look for changes in the metabolites generated by cells when they are exposed to radiation and which then end up in the blood. However, Albert Fornace at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, US, funded by the US government, says that these metabolites also turn up in saliva and urine, but not in high enough concentrations for current testing equipment to detect. However, Fornace and his team say the required sensitivity is possible using a new generation of lab-on-a-chip technologies that he is developing. Because they rely on easily obtainable saliva and urine samples, the machines should allow a much higher throughput of tests in an emergency. Read the full radiation dose detector patent application. ...

Calm down, you neo-conservative warmongers. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's no more a threat than Congressman Joe Blow back in Cleveland, trying to appeal to the good folks who make up his base. So suggests Brian Williams. Hat tip jazr. Fresh from his trip to Tehran, where he scored a big exclusive with the Iranian president, Williams sat down with Jon Stewart on last night's Daily Show. JON STEWART: Tell me about this guy. BRIAN WILLIAMS: He is a lot of things. He's a Ph.D. He's the former mayor of Tehran. He's got an election next year, and, after all, at the end of the day, he's a politician. And he may very well know that the religious folks who, some would argue, more in charge than he is, have perhaps decided that embracing the West, the US, while these talks are going on in Geneva, wouldn't be a bad idea. You enter that country and you see what sanctions do. You see that the city streets remind you of a cross between Havana and Baghdad. Kind of a used-to-be Eastern Bloc nation that hasn't had a cent invested in years. Where we're staying in what used to be a Hilton until the revolution, and it has just gone to hell. Walls of the hotel are scraped and it's Dirty and awful -- View video at Daily Show website [16 minutes in]. STEWART: Any stuff to Bomb? Anything we could bring down with some type of explosions? WILLIAMS [ignoring the question]: So the first indication we had -- STEWART: Were you at the presidential palace? WILLIAMS: We ...

No one thinks that anything catastrophic is going to happen in their neighbourhood. At worst most Canadians worry about what will happen if there is another ice-storm like the one in 1998 that left some Canadians without power for weeks. Or another big blackout like the one the one that hit the northeast quadrant of North America in summer of 2003. Certainly no one things that a propane facility in their neighbourhood is going to explode but that's what happened to residents of Toronto's Downsview neighbourhood in the early morning of August 10. ">Truth Seeker posted several videos that show the explosion , including several from some popular YouTubers who were there for an 08/08/08 gathering. When you watch you will understand why so many people initially worried that the city had been bombed. As Tricia's Musings says, the footage is reminiscent of that you would see from a war zone. People witnessed the blast from as far away as Niagara on the Lake (1.5 hours from here) and Aurora (about 50 min drive from here). Some said they thought it was a Dirty Bomb or nuclear blast. Looking at the footage and photos I can understand why they felt that way as it really looks like a war scene. It reminds me of watching footage of scud missiles hitting targets in Iraq. Fear was present in the IM conversation that Kattekylling posted as her live blog of the explosion . And you can't blame allywest for being thankful for being out of town when ...

Earlier this week, I popped on from vacation long enough to note that Russia may have employed the communist PKK just before the fighting to Bomb the Turkish leg of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline that leads through Georgia. Today, I pop on again, and just long enough to note another rather curious (though wholly expected) bit of Russian play: The use of units comprised of ethnic Chechens to do much of the very Dirty work in Georgia. The nickname [‘Shrek’] given by his comrades to the bald, pug-eared soldier was the only moment of light relief during a day of tense drama in which The Times witnessed Russia breaching the ceasefire agreement over South Ossetia at will. At a checkpoint set up by the Russian Army on the approach to the city of Gori from the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, an armoured personnel carrier blocked the road and riflemen had fanned out in the surrounding bushes, their weapons trained on anyone who approached. All were ethnic Chechens, whose reputation for pitiless brutality in war made them feared throughout the Caucasus. The last sentence is an understatement. Russia once again choosing separatists of choice, either because of political compatibility or sheer ruthless effectiveness. So much more to this as it continues to develop, but noting the Chechen units of the Russian Army on the ground was warranted here. ...

We don't know why anyone would want to take credit for box-office Bomb Swing Vote , but perhaps the job market is tough for former presidential secretaries. In any event, Bush's former assistant, Bradley Blakeman, claims that "elements" of the Kevin Costner film were stolen from a screenplay he wrote entitled Go November . One problem: Blakeman's script didn't leave the election up to one person, which is the entire premise of Swing Vote . Instead, Blakerman's script has a group of swing voters deciding the election, which would have been more realistic and might have made more money at the box-office. AP : A former presidential aide claims in a lawsuit that plot and marketing elements of the Kevin Costner and Kelsey Grammer movie ''Swing Vote'' were stolen from him. Political commentator Bradley Blakeman, a former deputy assistant to President Bush for appointments and scheduling, said in the lawsuit filed Thursday that he gave a copyrighted screenplay entitled ''Go November'' to Grammer in 2006. The lawsuit, filed in federal court on Long Island, claims Grammer agreed to develop the project and star as an incumbent Republican president but ended up portraying a similar role in ''Swing Vote,'' which was released Aug. 1... Blakeman claims ''Swing Vote'' incorporated other elements that he proposed, including: the timing of the film's release, the use of real-life newscasters as actors playing themselves, the use of Dirty tricks by ...
