In my last post, we examined the seeminly naive position of Barack Obama on the crucially important foreign policy issue of Iran. I promised to discuss in this post the crucial question of how to convince the American public that American and Israeli interests converge on the issue of Iran. Soon, the Iranians will start to rely on an isolationist Obama leading his people out of Iraq in defeat, with the left liberals in control of the Democratic party fearing nothing as much as a "Jewish-AIPAC conspiracy" to spend more American blood, this time on behalf of "Zionist" oppressors. We shall pick up this theme, but dear readers I want to postpone it to the next post, because today the very astute Barry Rubin wrote an important column that I should bring to your attention. Unfortunately for America, the candidate leading in the polls for the presidency, Mr. Obama was only a young teenager during the fiasco of the Carter administration's misdealings with Iran.  Carter has the nerve to run around the world giving advice and criticizing Israel and America, but surely much of the modern history of terrorism arises from the stupid mistakes he made in his foreign policy attempts. And the fact that his National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski is still an important figure to the Obama people makes it all the more important for Americans to understand the history of the Iranian Revolution and American policy towards Iran. Here is a very importa ...

Researchers at Purdue University are working on tech that will turn every cellphone into a roaming nuclear weapon sniffer and are lobbying Congress to legally require cellphone users and carriers to participate. The Distributed Nuclear Detection by Ubiquitous Cellphone project would be kind of like the massive cellphone dragnet in The Dark Knight , but it would look for terrorists sneaking dirty bombs and nuclear weapons instead of the Joker. Like the Batman system, the more phones on the ground, the better, since it would be able to triangulate the source of radiation more accurately. Phones closest to the deadly stuff as they pass by would give off stronger signals, pinpointing where it's at, or how it's moving in real time. Also, the larger the scale of the project, the less the system would cost per phone—right now it's around $50-$100 a phone. Blown up to a hundred million phones, the price would plummet. Obviously, there are some major civil rights issues here, especially if you're legally required to be a constantly lo-jacked, walking bomb detector for the Man. Newsweek suggests a more Diplomatic and less creepy Solution, where government agencies would pay you to opt-in. I think that's one paycheck I'd have to pass on. [ Newsweek ] ...

A leaked Diplomatic cable published in France yesterday underscores the dangers that will confront a new Obama administration in Afghanistan. Published in the French press, the cable quotes Sherard Cowper-Coles, the British ambassador in Afghanistan, predicting that the NATO-led military campaign against the Taliban will fail. "The presence of the coalition, in particular its military presence, is part of the problem, not part of its Solution. Foreign forces are the lifeline of a regime that would rapidly collapse without them. As such, they slow down and complicate a possible emergence from the crisis." To consider the significance of this, think back to the first presidential debate, where yet again, Barack Obama made moving large numbers of American forces from Iraq to Afghanistan the centerpiece of his foreign policy. Then, to double the trouble, remember that the British have been the United States' closest ally in the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Finally, don't forget that another central criticism Obama has made of the Bush administration was its unilateral approach to major foreign policy issues. So here we have Senator Obama arguing, as the central point of his foreign policy, that the US needs to work more closely with its allies to escalate the war in Afghanistan, while the ambassador of our closest ally to Afghanistan forcefully argues in coded Diplomatic cables that escalation would only make matters worse and ...

The British government on Saturday denied a claim that it believes the military campaign in Afghanistan is doomed to failure after a French newspaper published what it said were comments made by London's ambassador to Kabul. France's weekly Le Canard Enchaine, a weekly publication known for its investigative stories, said a leaked French Diplomatic cable recounted talks between Britain's Ambassador Sherard Cowper-Coles and a French official. Cowper-Coles was quoted as saying that Afghanistan might best be "governed by an acceptable dictator," the French newspaper reported Wednesday. It also said Cowper-Coles was quoted as saying that "the American strategy is destined to fail" and that the presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan was "part of the problem, not the Solution." Britain's Foreign Secretary David Miliband described the report as "garbled," and insisted Friday on his Web site that the U.K. does not support a move toward a Kabul dictatorship. On Saturday, Britain's Foreign Office said that Cowper-Coles had held a meeting with a French counterpart but insisted that the reported comments did not reflect the government's views. The French newspaper published excerpts of the purported cable, including a passage that quoted the British ambassador as criticizing both U.S. presidential candidates over pledges to send more U.S. troops to Afghanistan. "It is the American presidential candidates who must be dissuaded from getting ...

Both front-runners for the leadership of Israel's ruling party vow to take a hard line against Iran, threatening possible military force if sanctions do not halt what Israel believes is a covert nuclear weapons program. The winner of Wednesday's primary to replace Ehud Olmert as head of the Kadima Party would be in a strong position to succeed him as prime minister, and the stance toward Iran could have repercussions for peace in the Middle East. Israel's soft-spoken foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, is battling Shaul Mofaz, a former military chief and defense minister, in the race to head the centrist party. Both say they prefer a Diplomatic Solution, but promise to be as tough as needed in confronting Iran. Israeli officials describe Iran as the biggest threat to Israel's existence. They cite Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's frequent calls for its destruction and the Iranian development of long-range missiles capable of striking the Jewish state. Mofaz has indicated a stronger willingness to turn to the military option. In June, he spooked world oil markets by telling the newspaper Yediot Ahronot that Israel would have "no choice" but to attack Iran if Diplomatic efforts to end Tehran's nuclear program fail. ...

Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Sunday that Iran's military will "break the hand" of any aggressor that target his country's nuclear facilities. Addressing a military parade broadcast live on state television, he said: "If anyone allows himself to commit even a tiny offense against Iran's legitimate interests, borders and sacred land, our armed forces will break his hand before he pulls the trigger." The phrase "legitimate interests" is Iranian parlance for the country's nuclear program, which the West says is a cover for a nuclear weapon program. Iran, which denies the charge, already is under three sets of sanctions by the U.N. Security Council over its nuclear program. Washington and its Western allies are pushing for quick passage of a fourth set of sanctions to underline the international community's resolve. But Ahmadinejad said Sunday that sanctions only help Iran achieve self-sufficiency. "Those who once imposed sanctions, today should open their eyes and see our nation's technical achievements." Both the United States and its ally Israel say they support a Diplomatic Solution to the nuclear standoff with Iran but cannot rule out the military option. "Today, Iran is not in a position to show softness toward its enemies," said Ahmadinejad, but added that threats made against Iran's nuclear facilities amounted to only "psychological warfare." Sunday's parade marked the start in 1980 of Iran's ruinous eight-year war ...

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani, Friday said that only Pakistan has the right to launch an offensive against the terrorists, adding “we are capable of taking an effective action within the boundaries of our country”. “We will decide on taking action if anyone shares actionable intelligence with us,” the Prime Minister said while talking to media here. He said Pakistan enjoys amicable relations with all the countries and “we will be able to bring the UK and US round to the fact that we are fully capable of tacking the scourge of terrorism ourselves”. “We can take the matter of unilateral strikes in Pakistan on the Diplomatic level, but cannot wage war,” he asserted. Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said a pragmatic Solution to the issue of terrorism will be worked out through dialogue. ...
