Researchers discover first prehistoric pregnant turtle and nest of eggs in badlands of Alberta, CanadaA 75-million-year-old Fossil of a pregnant turtle and a nest of fossilized eggs that were discovered in the badlands of southeastern Alberta by scientists and staff from the University of Calgary and the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology are yielding new ideas on the evolution of egg-laying and reproduction in turtles and tortoises. It is the first time the Fossil of a pregnant turtle has been found and the description of this Discovery was published Wednesday in the British journal Biology Letters. The mother carrying the eggs was found in 1999 by Tyrrell staff while the nest of eggs was discovered in 2005 by U of C scientist Darla Zelenitsky, the lead author of the article and an expert on Fossil nest sites, and her field assistant. Both were found about 85 km south of Medicine Hat in the Manyberries area."Although it is relatively rare to find the eggs and babies of extinct animals, it is even rarer to find them inside the body of the mother," says Darla Zelenitsky, who was also involved in the first Discovery of a Dinosaur with eggs inside its body.It was almost by accident that scientists realized that the Fossil turtle was pregnant."The turtle specimen was partly broken when it was first discovered. It is this fortuitous break that revealed that the Fossil was a mother," says François Therrien, a co-investigator of the study an ...

Source: Telegraph (UK) (7-12-08) A mild-mannered Chinese professor is being hailed as the world's greatest palaeontologist for his part in the Discovery of 30 new species of dinosaurs over the past 15 years. Prof Xu inspects a feathered, four-winged Dinosaur Fossil Now China hopes Xu Xing's work will help attract a new kind of tourist to China - one for whom a fossilised raptor holds more appeal than the country's millennia of history and culture. He specialises in the winged and feathered dinosaurs that were the ancestors of today's birds, and his discoveries include creatures such as the "Gigantoraptor", a one-and-half ton beast that is the largest bird-like Dinosaur found so far, the four-winged "Microraptor" and the buck-toothed and tiny "Incisivosaurus", one of his favourite dinosaurs, which had rodent-like teeth. ... It's not just the head or a foot or a tail that they have found. Scientists in Japan and Mongolia have successfully recovered the complete skeleton of a 70-million-year-old a Tarbosaurus Dinosaur, a relative of the giant carnivorous Tyrannosaurus. The Associated Press reports that the Fossil of the young Dinosaur, believed to have died at the age of five years old, was found in a chunk of sandstone they dug up in August 2006 in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. "We were so lucky to have found remains that turned out to be a complete set of all the important parts," Takuji Yokoyama, a spokesman for the Hayashibara Museum of Natural Sciences, a co-organizer of the joint research project, told AP. It has taken two years of careful preparatory work, but the team knows now that the Fossil lacks only neck bones and the tip of the tail. Since the dead bodies of young dinosaurs were often destroyed by weather decay or were torn apart by predators, such a find is extremely rare and could offer unique insight into the growth and development of dinosaurs. This Tarbosaurus Dinosaur measured 6.6 feet long. Adults grew to about 40 feet. Although they can't tell the gender, they do know the Dinosaur came from a geological layer created about 70 million years ago in the late Cretaceous period. source: Netscape.com Does your boy love dinosaurs? Dinosaur Habitat by Helen V. Griffith © 1999, 96 pages Level 3 ( all about levels ) Learn More on Amazon Reviewed by Gina Clifford Ryan is an absolute Dinosaur fanatic but Nathan doesn't know the first thing about dinosaurs. One day, Ryan finds what he thinks is a real Dinosaur Fossil — a Dinosaur egg, perhaps. As the brothers argue, the Fossil ends up in Ryan's terrarium full of plastic dinosaurs and real swamp soil. Suddenly, everything is wet, foggy, and buggy. As the fog clears, the boys quickly realize that they are in a prehistoric world that looks remarkably like the landscape in Ryan's terrarium. One by one, Ryan and Nathan meet the inhabitants of the terrarium and embark on an incredible journey of adventure and Discovery. Are the boys really in the terrarium? Will the volcano Ryan built erupt? How will the boys get back home? Dinosaur Habitat is an incredibly fun book to read. With Dinosaur facts weaved seamlessly into the story, kids get a feel for what it might have been like to walk among the dinosaurs. The author uses such detailed descriptions that the reader really feels like part of the story. This book was a hit with our young reader. As a Dinosaur enthusiast, he appreciated the author's portrayal of the various dinosaurs' personalities, especially the baby hadrosaur. The book was so engaging, our young reader begged to continue reading, even though it was bedtime! ... Source: humorousculture.blogspot.com --- 66 days ago
I have to admit I seldom watch CNN, don't care for their portrayal of the news. The network runs the same old stories into the ground. They just want overanalyze issues, mostly pointless ones about politics. What I can't fathom is having Larry King is still going strong in his show's like 80th year. He's like Barbara Walters, never seems to shut up and has an infinite life form. I don't think the aging legendary broadcaster has even slumped over in a chair during an interview or blacked out from lack of insulin. He sure likes those suspenders too. Without them he's like a shoeless Mr. Rogers on the air. I have to hand it to Larry as he asks the hard-hitting questions to his guests over personal, controversial issues yet you never hear one of them build up the courage to probe him on why one of his bones has yet to be preserved as a Fossil and put on display in a museum. He even outlived comedian George Carlin and was interviewed about their relationship as friends. Honestly, Larry needs to retire and give another anchor a chance in the spotlight. His career spans through historic newsworthy events which aren't as old as him. The first Larry King Live I think was an interview he conducted about the first known Dinosaur egg discovered in the World preceding the Stone Age. As usual Larry was hot on the case: "Hello, this is the first broadcast of Larry King Live. I'm here in Northern Asia where a miraculous Discovery has been made. With me ... A newly discovered batch of well-preserved Dinosaur bones, petrified trees and even freshwater clams in southeastern Utah could provide new clues about life in the region some 150 million years ago. The Bureau of Land Management announced the find Monday, calling the quarry near Hanksville "a major Dinosaur Fossil Discovery." An excavation revealed at least four sauropods, which are long-necked, long-tailed planteating dinosaurs, and two carnivorous ones, according to the bureau. It may have also uncovered an herbivorous stegosaurus. Animal burrows and petrified tree trunks 6 feet in diameter were found nearby. The site doesn't contain any new species but offers scientists the chance to learn more about the ecology of that time, said Scott Foss, a BLM paleontologist. The fossilized dinosaurs are from the same late Jurassic period as those at Dinosaur National Monument, which straddles the Utah/Colorado state line, and the Cleveland-Lloyd quarry near Price. It could be a decade or so before the full importance of the Hanksville quarry is known, Foss said. "It does have the potential to match the other major quarries in Utah," he said. The site, roughly 50 yards wide by 200 yards long, was excavated by a team from the Burpee Museum of Natural History in Rockford, Ill. Museum officials visited the site for about a week last summer and returned this year for a three-week excavation. The area has long been known to locals and BLM officials as ... We got back from vacation a few weeks ago and we had a great time. We went to Beaver, Ut and the weather was so nice. We had such a fun time together. This is going to be a long entry with lots of pictures, enjoy! The first day we drove to Mequite, Ut. We didn't take any pictures on that day. The next day we went to a Dinosaur Discovery museum in St. George. Allie was pretty excited to check out dinosaurs and Katie was waking up from the car ride. Here is Allie checking out a footprint Fossil. Mike tried to get Katie to touch the Fossil, but she was not interested. Here they are after the tour, drawing and coloring. They had such a fun time and they were so good on the trip. Taking a break after the museum with Kool-Aid, Yum! My girls are dang cute, if I may say so myself. When we got to Beaver we visited Mike's Grandma. Uncle Mark is in this picture on the right. Mike's parents went with us on vacation, it was nice to have them there. Here is Mark, Sianna, Hailey, Allie, and Katie at the local 4th of July parade. The local kids rode bikes, horses, and ATV's, it was cute. Katie walking at the park after the parade. Allie ran in a race and got 2nd place and a tootsie pop. Here is Allie playing with her cousins in Great Grandma's backyard. Here is Valerie helping Mike turn the brake off the ATV so he could take Allie for her first ride. They had a ton of fun riding around town. By the way, nobody got hurt on this ride, thankfully. Fundies have been all a-dither and a-shriek the last few days over the "Discovery" of Dinosaur and human footprints embedded in a slab of limestone in Texas. Rock-solid proof that man walked with the dinosaurs ! " A slab of North Texas limestone is on track to rock the world, with its two imbedded footprints poised to make a huge impression in scientific and religious circles." [...] The limestone contains two distinct prints – one of a human footprint and one belonging to a Dinosaur. The significance of the cem ent-hard Fossil is that it shows the Dinosaur print partially over and intersecting the human print. In other words, the stone’s impressions indicate that the human stepped first, the Dinosaur second. If proven genuine, the artifact would provide evidence that man and Dinosaur roamed the Earth at the same time, according to those associated with the find and with its safekeeping. It could potentially toss out the window many commonly held scientific theories on evolution and the history of the world." Um yeah, sure. But what do the experts say? I knew just where to go to get the straight goods on the story : "It's supposed to be a human footprint with that of an Acrocanthosaurus on top of it, showing that dinosaurs walked the earth after human beings.Unfortunately, they both look ridiculously fake. The human print has toes like tubes and a wierdly dug-in big toe, and looks ridiculously fake. The dino print is even worse — it's b ...
