In February 1959, Dinah Washington recorded one of the biggest jazz-pop crossover hits by a female jazz vocalist to date. Backed by shimmering strings, a small choir and a rhythm section, Dinah leaned into the studio microphone and sang What a Difference a Day Makes for Mercury Records. Produced by Clyde Otis, the easy-listening, bluesy ballad was meant to be just another moody jazz vocal track. But in 1959, with Elvis Presley in the army and a vacuum in the rock world created by the sudden death of Buddy Holly in February, pop began to make a mini comeback with young audiences. Within weeks of its release in the spring, the height of prom season, What a Difference a Day Makes entered Billboard's Hot 100 chart in May and soared to #8. The song would remain on the chart for 20 weeks and transform Dinah almost overnight from a jazz-blues singer to a jukebox pop star. But the song's success also inflated Dinah's diva side. After laboring for years under enormous pressure, cranking out jazz and blues hits, Dinah by early 1959 had still not achieved as much recognition or pay as Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and other better-known jazz singers. With What a Difference a Day Makes, Dinah viewed her 1959 hit as belated confirmation of her ability to kill in the pop market and become a bankable mainstream star. Brook Benton was another hot property at Mercury Records in early 1959. The smooth-voiced r&b baritone had recently recorded It's Jus ... Source: news.yahoo.com --- 22 days ago

More than any other Soul performer (or such Jazz-Blues belters as Dinah Washington), Aretha Franklin brought impassioned Gospel singing to American popular music. Never as subdued as the subtler Sam Cooke, Franklin belts out profane R&B songs with enough sacred lung power to send the sound waves all the way up to the heavens. Franklin doesn't go over the top, though, always staying in the realm of good taste and sensitive delivery. As she proved during her greatest period, the late '60 Atlantic Recordings, Franklin blows the roof off your house with so much class that you don't want her to stop until she has reduced your love shack to a pile of splinters. Who else could outdo Otis Redding and turn "Respect" into an eternal anthem of racial and sexual pride that even middle-class white men embrace? Franklin's voice has weathered the decades very well but her arrangements and material are often beneath her. You can't go wrong with any of her recent Gospel recordings and 1998's A Rose is Still A Rose embraced hip-hop production with great success. Aretha Franklin remains a vital part of the modern music scene. - Nick Dedina ... Source: ester.vodpod.com --- 80 days ago

Soundwaves: WHO DO U LOVE... Are you ready? One of gay clubland's favorite singers is returning with new material this fall. Well, yes, Whitney Houston may return, if she can get her act together. But that's not who I mean. Same script, different cast: Houston's one-time duet partner Deborah Cox will release The Promise later this fall. Of course, just last year Cox released Destination Moon, her fourth studio album, but no remixes ever surfaced from it. As a high-concept tribute to jazz singer Dinah Washington, it had limited appeal. Her previous set, The Morning After, was released all the way back in 2002. Deborah Cox The 34-year-old Canadian native started as a backing vocalist for Celine Dion, then became a protégé of Arista Records' Clive Davis, the legendary label honcho who also championed Houston. Exactly one decade ago Cox scored her only major mainstream hit, ''Nobody's Supposed to Be Here,'' and Hex Hector's remix of that song was just one of over a dozen hits she's had in clubland. Four years ago, she made a rare foray on Broadway, starring in the Elton John/Tim Rice Disney musical AIDA. But she got her start in R&B, so to R&B she now returns. On The Promise, which Cox will release Nov. 11 on her own label, the artist worked with many notable producers, including John Legend, who co-wrote the album's title track. ... (more) ... Lots of things contribute to the makings of a great female jazz singer, beside just a great singing voice: a stylishly graceful wardrobe, a laid back (but spunky) demeanor, and a connection with the audience. Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Nina Simone, Dinah Washington and Nancy Wilson all had it and... ... Source: www.lasvegassun.com --- 37 days ago
