A Republican stalwart who played a key role in implementing the agenda of George W. Bush over these long miserable eight years now attempts to recast himself as an "outsider" eager to return to Washington and clean up the mess he helped create. John McCain can run from Republican Washington but he can't hide. The essence of Washington's past eight years is a vast machinery built for the US's protection re-engineered into a device for its exploitation. There are majestic workings of the free market, boring ever deeper into the tissues of the state. Ultimately, there is one of the true marvels of history: democracy buried beneath an avalanche of money. - Thomas Frank (Aug 5, '08) ... Source: www.motherjones.com --- 31 days ago
