The 2009 Digital TV Transition: What You Need to Know
24 days ago

Source: blogs.reuters.com --- 19 days ago
WASHINGTON - It is about six months until the United States faces a seismic event that potentially rivals the Y2K scare eight years ago — the Digital television Transition which could switch off millions of old television sets. The television industry and government officials are doing a lot to warn consumers that if they don’t have [...] ...

I haven't talked much about the Digital TV Transition , which will happen to television receiving signals over the airwaves in February 2009 and cable in 2012. Consumers are confused. It's a marketing bonanza for consumer electronics manufacturers and retailers. Several manufacturers have special Web sites to educate in-market buyers on the Transition, and the value of HDTV. Best Buy now has Ask a Blue Shirt , a site set up to ease the minds of consumers. It's a blog, FAQ, and directory of where consumers can find DTV bootcamps at local Best Buy locations. Best Buy is such a comfort here, the Blue Shirts will befriend consumers on Facebook through a widget. It displays a countdown clock on your page, and lets you challenge friends to '80s and '90s TV trivia, or just take the trivia challenge yourself. While you test your knowledge of syndicated sitcoms of yesterday, Best Buy throws in a few facts about DTV options at its stores. ...

I was watching the Olympics this weekend and saw one of those DTV Transition commercials. It made me realize that we are less than six months away from the full Digital television Transition . What this means is on February 17, 2009 broadcast television stations will only air on Digital frequencies. If you live in the Wilmington, North Carolina area you've only got three weeks to prepare. Local TV stations will switch over to solely Digital transmissions on September 8 as a test market for the Transition. If you don't have a Digital or High Definition (HD) TV , the chart I've included will tell you what you need to do. If you have cable, you should check with your service provider to see if there is anything you need to do. Those of you with an analog television (no cable) will need to get a signal converter box ( you can get a coupon for it) to receive the Digital television signals. If you don't have paid service and aren't sure if your television is Digital or HD, there are ways you can tell. The Federal Communications Commission's Digital tuner rule specifies that as of March 1, 2007 , all new TVs must include Digital tuners. Many DTVs and Digital television equipment have labels or markings on them, or statements in the informational materials that came with them, to indicate that they contain Digital tuners. These labels or markings may contain the words “Integrated Digital Tuner,” “Digital Tuner Built-In,” “Digital Receiver,” or ...

WREX-13 will conduct the first of three tests Wednesday designed to see whether your TV is ready for the Digital Transition Feb. 17. At 6:30 p.m., the station will perform a three-minute, 30-second test. After a brief explanation, WREX-13 will turn off its analog signal for a minute and 30 seconds. If you receive WREX-13 through a cable or satellite feed, you will either see a note that your cable company is ready — or that it is working to be ready by February. If your TV accepts the Digital broadcast, you will be notified on the screen as well. If you have a snowy or blank screen, the station will explain what steps you must take to accept the Digital signal. “Wheel of Fortune” will run in its entirety after the test. Nationally, television stations are mandated to make this conversion to free up the broadcast spectrum for public safety communications and other uses. Stations also can broadcast multiple programs on Digital channels (main programming on 13.1, for example, but other shows on 13.2 or 13.3). For more information, go to wrex.com and click on “DTV Answers.” You also can go to dtv.gov . ...

I mentioned this yesterday but it got buried in the Digital-Transition post: Members of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission will be traveling to 80 cities starting Aug. 27 to educate consumers about why we’re moving to all-Digital TV broadcasts. FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has announced a nationwide initiative to increase awareness about the upcoming Transition to Digital television. By now nearly everyone has heard something about the Digital TV Transition set to take place on Feb. 17, 2009. That's the day when all full-power broadcast television stations in the United States will cease broadcasting on analog airwaves and begin broadcasting solely in Digital. That's less than a year away -- so now is the time to start thinking about how the switch will affect you. Will you choose to get a converter box or will you take advantage of this opportunity and step up to the amazing picture of a high definition TV with a built-in Digital tuner? While the change to all-Digital TV might sound a little scary to some people, the fact is that Digital broadcasting will benefit everyone, bringing improved picture and sound quality, as well as additional channels and interactive video and data services. The best news is that it's actually very simple to make the switch from analog to Digital TV at home. Follow these tips and you will be well on your way to enjoying a high-definition Digital experience in your own home. Getting Started If you're looking to get the best high-definition picture, you'll need an HDTV set capable of 720p, 1080i or 1080p picture resolution. You'll also need a high-definition source such as an HD cable box or satellite receiver and be watching a high definition channel that will show 720p or 1080i resolution. To receive 1080p resolution, which is the clearest, most detailed picture available today, you' ...
