This paper seeks to explore how the implementation of open access licences onto recordings and other forms of Digital performance of creative works which have entered the public domain, complements the notion of Digital commons. The paper starts from the assumption that there are types of creative works (i.e. music works, theatre plays, etc) whose effective dedication to the public domain for the benefit of the public at large would never reach the full status of "commons" if digitised performances of these works were not disseminated under open access licences (e.g., Creative Commons'). The introduction draws on the assumption that creative works which give rise to a huge stock of the public domain in certain fields of creativity would not become available to the public in Digital formats (at least for free) without the necessary intermediation of performers and producers of audio and video recordings. From this perspective, there would be no lawful way for the public at large to enjoy for free Digital items embodying creative works such as a Bach's suite, a Brahms's symphony or a Shakespeare's play, if certain kinds of music and theatre performers and/or recording producers did not release their Digital performances and recordings using open access licences. The paper seeks to explain why the implementation of these licences to the Management of copyright-related Rights for the achievement of an effective dedication of certain works ... I long back to the days in academia where we had university wide licenses for full text pdf of journals. Just received one document from the British Library today with the following note: The document contains 8 pages, is 514KB, was posted on July 23, 2008 and is now available. This is something that goes a step forward into the new ways to distribute your music. I used to be a fan of Nine Inch Nails (have bought several CDs). Their latest instrumental release, has been released as a Torrent, officially. That was possible because of their “label” independance, and a commitment with the people. That is [...] ... Users who download music from German retailer Saturn's online music store will now be able to share and use their purchased music without the usual restrictions associated with Digital Rights Management (DRM). Here's some amazing news, if you're European: Sony's European PlayTV DVR add-on for the PS3 doesn't have Digital Rights Management. The thing just exports videos to your PS3's XMB menu as MPEG-4 video, allowing you to transfer your video to other devices, stream it elsewhere and otherwise do whatever you'd like with your content. Whether this is a feature or an oversight remains to be seen. It seems more than a little strange that Sony would allow this kind of free reign with content, so there may be a patch soon. But until then, enjoy, Europeans. Source ... Source: forums.electronicarts.co.uk --- 3 days ago
Apologies if this is in the wrong section. Why did EA remove deactivation from games using Securom? The one redeeming feature of this annoying piracy protection was the ability to deactivate a game before uninstalling/HDD format, this way gamers could manage their installs themselves and only contact support if they accidentally lost one. Before removing the need to activate; Bioshock operated this way. However I cannot format a HDD containing Mass Effect, why? ---Quote--- I need to format a HDD but Mass Effect is installed, I understand doing this will lose an activation. How do I deactivate Mass Effect so I do not permanently lose an activation during the format? On another note I heard Spore is going to be using Securom as well; with a three install limit. Are you able to give any information on how Spore handles deactivation? Thank you for your time. ***** ---End Quote--- ---Quote--- Hello *****, Thank you for contacting us here at Electronic Arts Technical Support. I am a student and currently doing my final year project. I have some experience using Visual Studio 2005 .NET but I have no experience as to how I'm supposed to use SDK hand in hand with VS2005 .NET.. My project is regarding Digital Rights Management. I have to create an application which allows a person to encode an audio or video file into wma/wmv respectively with a feature of DRM and necessary usage Rights. After encoding, I will be able to play the protected file with my own DRM Windows Media Player. Without proper license acquisition, it won't play. That's basically what I'm supposed to do. I need advice as to what SDKs I have to use and how do I use them? (Example: After installing, what do I do next to use the SDK with the forms I created in VS2005 .NET) Excuse me for my inexperience. On a day when a DRM–shackled service like Nokia Comes With Music finally gets the official go ahead, it’s interesting to see one of the majors going in completely the other direction, and dropping Rights Management all together. Universal is the latest big player to say enough’s enough when it comes to copy protection. According to Electric Pig , the label is plying its wares without the restrictive software already, with 7Digital offering tracks right now. Apparently, Warner has seen a massive 300 per cent jump in Digital sales since it gave two fingers to DRM, so Universal must be hoping for the same kind of action. A few years ago when I decided to start putting my writings out in the marketplace, I researched the ebook market as best that I was able. At first I even debated whether I should even offer ebooks. I had read so much stuff about how ebooks where never going to make it. But ultimately I decided to include ebooks in my business because the dire predictions of naysayers havent stopped me from doing much in my life. And preparing files for print publication gets you more than halfway to preparing files in various ebook formats. So there was no real reason not to sell ebooks, and the cost is almost nothing to produce ebooks. Anyway, I lurked in an ebook discussion group in 2004/2005 and learned that people seem to universally detest Digital Rights Management. The hatred was not so much caused by the fact that writers/publishers wanted to protect themselves from piracy, but just that the DRM caused so many inconveniences to the customer. Sometimes that inconvenience even meant losing the ebook entirely when equipment failed or needed to be upgraded. Understanding that potential customers did not want the inconvenience of DRM I decided not to worry about using it on my Digital products. I assume that I have some of my work out there posted and shared inappropriately, but at this point Im assuming that the cost of protecting my works (which would require additional technical infrastructure on my part) would exceed the cost to me of them b ...
