Related Articles The risks of free copper in the body and the development of useful anticopper drugs. Curr Opin Clin Nutr Metab Care. 2008 Nov;11(6):727-32 Authors: Brewer GJ PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the toxicity and risks of free copper in Wilson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, other disease of neurodegeneration, and cognitive loss in the general population. We will also review the anticopper drugs and how lowering free copper levels with an anticopper Drug inhibits fibrosis, inflammation, and autoimmunity. RECENT FINDINGS: Some exciting recent work indicates that free copper levels are increased in Alzheimer's disease, and copper may be involved in disease pathogenesis, opening the way to possible therapy of Alzheimer's disease with anticopper drugs. Copper may also be involved in other diseases of neurodegeneration. A very exciting recent study indicts high intake of copper, mostly from copper supplements, in conjunction with a high-fat Diet in more rapid cognitive decline in the general population. Other data indicate that even low levels of copper in drinking water, perhaps similar to copper supplements, bypasses the liver, enters the circulation, increases the blood-brain penetration of copper, and may cause damage. SUMMARY: Some of the implications are that Alzheimer's disease and other diseases of neurodegeneration and fibrotic, inflammatory, and autoimmune diseases may be treatable by lowering the availability of free copp ...

Related Articles Prevalence of risk determinants for metformin-associated lactic acidosis and metformin utilization in the study of health in pomerania. Horm Metab Res. 2008 Jul;40(7):491-7 Authors: Runge S, Alte D, Baumeister SE, Völzke H Risk determinants for the life threatening complication of metformin-associated lactic acidosis are frequently disregarded. Our first aim was to investigate the prevalence of risk determinants in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) taking metformin compared to subjects with nonmetformin treatment. Our second aim was to estimate the proportion of subjects with alternative Drug-treatment, and no risk determinants, which would probably benefit from metformin. The Study of Health in Pomerania is a population-based health survey including 322 DM2 subjects. Risk determinants were assessed by personal interview, ultrasound, and laboratory analysis. Among the subjects with DM2 n=92 (28.6%) were treated with metformin, n=162 (50.3%) with alternative medication, and n=68 (21.1%) with Diet. The prevalence of at least one risk determinant was 62% for metformin-users. There was no difference in number and type of risk determinants. Heart failure, angina pectoris, and liver disorders presented the most frequent risk determinants. Current risk determinants for metformin-associated lactic acidosis are largely disregarded. Improved selection of patients can result in safe metformin utilization in one quarter ...

I have been busy!  I didn't realize how much time had gone by since I last posted.  Let's see.  I had gone to Menards last Saturday, and on Sunday, I pulled away everything from the west side of the porch, and removed everything from the wall, down to the studs.  I got the new 4-mil poly sheeting up, covering that wall and stapled it on.  I got one sheet of plywood up on the studs at the bottom so now I have a 4' wall, but still need to fill in a 2' gap to complete the wall.  On Tuesday, I took everything away from the little front porch or stoop, got up on ladder and removed everything from the front of the porch down to the studs.  Also, got some laundry and dishes and vacuuming done.  On Wednesday, I had a doctor's appointment for a checkup, and managed to bring down my cholesterol and triglycerides count using just Diet and exercise.  Cholesterol down 6 points, triglycerides down 20 points, but the doctor still wants me to start taking another kind of statin Drug.  I declined to accept and will continue on my own, eating healthier foods and hopefully, less of them. On Thursday, I decided that my dogs need to be wormed, and stopped at Foster/Smith to get some (very expensive) wormer that will hopefully kill all 4 kinds of worms that dogs get.  I went on to lunch with my girlfriends from high school, had a chicken quesadilla and raspberry tea.  Afterwards, I went back to Menards for more staples, foam in a can to fill in big cracks ...

Doctors unfortunately have much to lose with federal preemption. Doctors are put in a vice between the Drug companies and their patients. While the FDA approves drugs for patient consumption, doctors exercise judgment to do what will not harm the patient. When they prescribe drugs for the patient it is with the understanding that the PDF warnings are complete. It’s the doctor who has to look the patient in the eye with continued treatment. So when the FDA research is incomplete or misleading often the doctor is shortchanged by giving advice that is faulty. Ultimately the patient suffers with adverse reactions of conditions that affect their lives. In the case of the Diet Drug controversy most doctors didn’t warn they patients of heart valve problems because they weren’t informed the combination of Diet drugs being prescribed was thought to be safe; when in fact the Drug manufacturers knew otherwise. And why didn’t the FDA warn the doctors? And of those patients who suffered the consequences who had to take care of them long term or worse to bury them? And in the case of VIOXX, pulled by Merck & Co. in 2004, why didn’t the doctors know that it increased the risk of a patient suffering a heart attack or stroke? And when Bayer withdrew Baycol in 2001 because of muscle damage in patients where was the FDA and the Drug manufacturer. Pfizer too Rezulin off the market in the year 2000 due to liver damage in patients taking it. And Avan ...
