I Don't Believe in Imaginary Property writes "Premier Election Solutions (a subsidiary of Diebold) has acknowledged a flaw that causes the systems to lose votes. It cannot be patched before the election and the machines are used in half of Ohio's counties, but they are issuing guidelines for avoiding the problem that presumably contain a work-around. While Diebold initially blamed anti-virus software for the glitch, they have now discovered that the bug was their own fault for not recording votes to memory when the cards are uploaded in 'certain circumstances' — something their initial analysis missed. It would be nice to hope that Ohio poll workers would be tech-savvy enough to make this a non-issue, but they had poll worker shortages last year and might need tech-savvy people to volunteer." We have been asserting for years that Diebold (now Premier Elections Systems) makes voting machines that don’t work, are unreliable and that have flipped elections. Just last week, Diebold was forced to admit that software in its machines has for a decade been dropping votes . These machines are being used in 34 states in the upcoming election. Two years ago, The Brad Blog broke the Pentagon Papers of E-Voting stories about the SAIC report on the vast problems with Diebold vote machines. In short, Diebold had issued a 40 page redacted version of the SAIC report which whitewashed the problems. Computer cyber security expert Stephen Spoonamore got a copy of the 197-page unredacted report which listed hundreds of serious problems, and he released that report to us. Well, Spoonamore did more than that – he took the report to the Maryland Board of Elections and confronted them with it at a public meeting. He told them that if he were handed such a report in the private sector, he would “shut down the system and open a fraud investigation.” The elections officials expressed shock that they had not ever seen the same unredacted report. And when the meeting was over, Spoonamore, with a concealed microphone, personally confronted the officials. And what did one of them say to him – that him having the report was “a security risk.” Following the confrontation, Spoonamore was contacted by law enforcement officials who demanded to know how he got ...

Earlier this week, we wrote about Ohio's lawsuit against Premiere Elections Systems -- better known by its previous name, Diebold -- where we noted Premiere's claim that the problems were the fault of antivirus software. That didn't make much sense, as we noted, but Randall Munroe has explained just how ridiculous this is (in a way that only he can) with his latest xkcd comic : Permalink | Comments | Email This Story ...

Worth reproducing in full here (at least the text): "Wait. " 'Antivirus software'? On voting machines? You're doing it wrong. " "Why? Security is good, right?" "Of course, but, well - "Imagine you're at a parent-teacher conference and the teacher reassures you that he always wears a condom while teaching." "Ah. Strictly speaking, it's better than the alternative-" "-yet someone is clearly doing their job horribly wrong." If you're missing the point here, it's that voting machines should be so electronically hardened and physically tamper-proof that it is impossible for a virus to even become installed on them in the first place. In other words, they should be like ATMs, which coincidentally, Diebold also manufactures. That they're essentially windows PCs with one custom app on them and no other software or hardware protection means that they're no more "voting machines" than your laptop is. ...

QUOTE A voting system used in 34 states contains a critical programming error that can cause votes to be dropped while being electronically transferred from memory cards to a central tallying point, the manufacturer acknowledges. The problem was identified after complaints from Ohio elections officials following the March primary there, but the logic error that is the root of the problem has been part of the software for 10 years, said Chris Riggall, a spokesman for Premier Election Solutions, formerly known as Diebold. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail..._contained.html ...

Guest Blogged by Ellen Theisen of VotersUnite.org Many jurisdictions are realizing their voting systems are horribly flawed and they want to get them fixed before November. Diebold President and CEO Thomas Swidarski has seen his company beat its financial goals. It is on track to cut $100 million in costs by year’s end. All he wants to do now is cut another $100 million, while moving the company further in the service end of its core businesses. Swidarski had to hold his tongue about his company’s performance for more than a year while Diebold worked out accounting problems with the Securities and Exchange Commission and Department of Justice. But on Aug. 11, Swidarski got to break his silence, announcing that the company was not only meeting its targets, but exceeding them. After that, he visited Boston and New York to meet with the company’s largest shareholders for the first time in 15 or 16 months. “It seemed like a lot longer than that,” Swidarski said. “The good news was, everyone was surprised and encouraged by the results.” Accounting changes the company had to make required it to restate its financials and stopped it from reporting results. Unfortunately, about the time Diebold had to go quiet, “banks stocks, which we’re closely tied to ... really headed south,” Swidarski said. Although Diebold wasn’t hurt by the mortgage or credit crisis, “It affects perceptions, since we didn’t have any results. The good thing was, when folks actually saw the results, the results speak to a very healthy environment for us.” Earnings are up, and profits are well above last year. How can that be with so many ...
