I was surprised, after some rummaging among past posts, to find that I have never before written about deviled eggs, as there is very nearly nothing I like more. I was even more surprised to find that I had a bit to learn on the subject, since I thought the case was, for me, closed. I knew that there were various French variations on stuffed eggs, which included asparagus, or shrimp, and the like. That... ...

New page I am PHILLIP KLEIN, of Detroit, Michigan. Maye a Baby Boomer, maybe not. Have seen my country go from a civic-minded to a selfish form of winner take all casino-style, Devil-May-Care, almost-hated by non-Americans. Looking for the new generation of Millenials to step up and change how we do business. I am willing to do my part. Meet with, call, email, discuss, and vote for others willing to lead the way. ...

YOU'VE probably seen the clip by now, as it's been in just about every tribute package on television: cornered on a precipitous ledge, the law on one side and a raging river below, the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) admits to Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) that he can't swim. "Are you crazy?" Butch says, with a hearty laugh. "The fall will probably kill you."It's a memorable Devil-May-Care quip in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, a movie full of priceless banter. But in the wake of Newman's death at the weekend, at the age of 83, there's another line that resonates even more, particularly during a critical stocktake of the more than 70 films that cemented the actor as an emblem of rebelliousness and compassion. ...

OK, I was being a bit of a smart aleck when I sent my last blog post ("Barack's G.O.P. Problem") to a few well-placed people over in Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign. "Handwringing should be an Olympic sport in Washington!," one of the Obama insiders wrote back. I was a little put off by what I thought was a rather cavalier, Devil-May-Care response. So, I responded, "HA! If only it were limited to Washington...." But after yesterday's spectacular fundraising announcement, I now understand why Team Obama feels it's doing just fine. The $66 million and the 500,000 new donors the campaign announced yesterday for the month of August should tamp down the wildfire of fear that has gripped Obamanistas across the country for the last two weeks. A new hard-hitting commercial out today from the Obama campaign should make them feel better, too. After a couple of weeks of ...

The Daily Beast , Tina Brown's culture and news website, went up Monday, and in case any puzzlement remains about what she's up to, there's a long Q&A with Brown herself laying it out. The site, she says, is not an "aggregator," as some have called it, including me here . Meaning it will not merely collect stories a la Yahoo News, but will "sift, sort and curate" the Web every day, combining some original stuff with links to other sites' content. Whether that's "aggregation" or not, it's a fairly standard approach to the Web. So Brown includes the key question in her Q&A: "Why should I visit you?" "Sensibility, darling," is her answer. She hopes that if you like the site's sensibility in "choosing news and opinion, then you'll trust us to be the lens you view it through." I'm not convinced you can sell a site on "sensibility" alone. That's like offering "value" to stockholders. Brown might have told us a little more specifically what her particular sensibility is, and what it will add to our lives. But I'll try to glean it myself. Judging by the first two days of the site's existence -- admittedly a limited sample, and every site evolves -- I'd describe The Daily Beast as a thematic relative of her defunct Talk Magazine. There's a bravura, Devil-May-Care tone in the display text and in the writing the site has commissioned. It's perfectly captured in a blog post from Brown herself on Sarah Palin. Brown celebrates the candidate's ...

BARNEGAT, N.J. — Is the Garden State Parkway the highway to hell? Or is the New Jersey Turnpike the road to damnation? Someone keeps stealing the metal signs at mile marker 66.6 along the heavily traveled toll roads, and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority is having a Devil of a time keeping up with the thefts. It's been happening all over the country, particularly on roads with names like Route 666. Officials aren't sure if the thefts are being committed by religious zealots upset about the number's association in the Bible with the Devil, by Satanic scavenger hunters, or by college students who think a '666' sign would look cool in their dorm room. Joe Orlando, a spokesman for the Authority, said officials have no idea who is taking the signs. "Maybe it's just some kids with a Devil-May-Care attitude," Orlando said. The latest theft involved someone swiping the 66.6 mile marker sign on the Parkway's northbound lanes. It's in a sparsely populated section of the Pinelands far from any entrances or exits. In short, you'd have to know the sign was there and go looking for it. But look for it _ and take it _ they do. Within the past two years, 66.6 mile marker signs have been stolen at least four or five times from the Turnpike and Parkway, he said. "Given the symbolism of the number and the fact that it is obviously done in the middle of night, and in the middle of nowhere, I can safely say that I'm not eager to meet the rocket scien ...

The new Sebastian Faulk James Bond novel, Devil May Care, follows on the tradition of Chateau Angelus making an appearance in Casino Royale by having Bond become an enourmous fan of a Bordeaux wine. It's Chateau Batailley, the Pauillac fifth growth and he is drinking the 1958 in Paris, talking to a French detective called Mathis. In the book, Mathis says, 'It's a fifth growth... it comes from a few metres west of Latour, but it's a fraction of the price. Try it.' It's mentioned a few times throughout the text, even in the last scene when he 'draws back the cork of a Chateau Batailley' before seducing his latest conquest. I guess the owner, Philippe Casteja, must be a pretty happy man. Good profile of the chateau here: http://www.thewinedoctor.com/bordeaux/batailley.shtml ...

Health Care. A shaky economy. Unemployment. Those are the hot-button issues being debated during this presidential race, and as usual, the candidates take such broad stands that even the most complicated issue becomes a one-size-fits-all sound bite. RELATED American Association of People with Disabilities Election Center Comparison of McCain's and Obama's positions on disability issues Disaboom , a resource and lifestyle site for the disabled Patricia E. Bauer's news and commentary on disability issues But citizens with disabilities (there are 54 million of them) would like some specifics before they cast their votes. It's not just that the Devil is in the details, but that their futures May very well depend on those details. Since our job as journalists is to ask the questions, it's also our job to get the specifics on the record. Unfortunately, it's rare that a reporter asks a disability-related question, but it's time to start. Digging deeper means not just reporting that vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has a baby with Down syndrome, but also reporting on what families in that situation need to raise their children. For many families, the need is great. Disability advocacy groups distributed some questions to the presidential candidates [Word file] before the National Forum on Disability Issues in Columbus, Ohio in July; additional questions were asked at the forum. Little has been written about these issues since then, and ...

It’s hard not to love the Mini Cooper S, what with its cheeky design and pocket-rocket performance. Our staff applauds the Mini for being one of the most fun small cars on the market today that still yields fuel economy figures in the high 20s. Our test car’s as-tested price rang in at over $30,000, which is a bit much for a Cooper S, but if we could delete a few of the unnecessary lux options, we’re sure that we’d have a perfect balance of fun and function. Click through the post to read our editors’ full impressions. Chris Paukert Editor-In-Chief Every time I get into a Mini Cooper, I’m given an object lesson in how much fun small cars can truly be. Its steering is nicely weighted, the S variant has enough power, and I much prefer the standard-length Cooper to the Clubman, whose messy access, corrupted visuals, and added heft (with only a minimal gain in utility) utterly lose the plot for me. Like most of my Winding Road /NextAutos crew, I could deal without the interior’s Devil-May-Care approach to ergonomics, however. Cute or no, the toggle switches for the side windows are mounted too low (and near to where one can accidentally trigger the seat heaters), the audio control locations are too convoluted for their own good, and unless you are Vern Troyer, I suspect you’ll never see the top third of the tachometer—the most important area. Foibles aside, this remains a great small car that is truly more than the sum of its parts. I ...

Filed under: Jets , Patriots , AFC East Maybe we've forgotten that the beginning of the Patriots' dynasty did not at all resemble the brash, overconfident, Devil-May-Care Patriots that ran up scores league-wide last year. Really, they looked a lot like the team that beat the Jets today. That's not to say that these Patriots are legitimate Super Bowl threats; circumstances and contexts change all the time. But it's a reminder that the Patriots don't have to set records on offense to be good (no matter what I've previously said); you can make up for an inexperienced quarterback with the right pieces elsewhere. So the Patriots certainly can continue to win, if they do remains to be seen. But they won today. They did it by running the ball with a lot of different legs, relying on defense, and capitalizing on mistakes. Matt Cassel , in his first start since 1970, was certainly reliable yet unspectacular. The first half wasn't exactly the prettiest football you've ever seen, but the Pats did enough to walk into the locker room with a 6-3 lead. And though the second half wasn't much better-looking, Brett Favre showed why you have to curb your enthusiasm when he hits on a desperation hail mary throw in the end zone, because he'll follow that up a week later with a poor, poor decision that leads to an interception (this one by Brandon Merriweather ), an interception that essentially loses the game. Favre's interception led to the Patriots ...

Faith's Checkbook by C.H. Spurgeon Devotional for Monday September 8, 2008 Broken and Smoking A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench. (Isaiah 42:3) Then I May reckon upon tender treatment from my Lord. Indeed, I feel myself to be at best as weak, as pliant, as worthless as a reed. Someone said, "I don't Care a rush for you"; and the speech, though unkind, was not untrue. Alas! I am worse than a reed when it grows by the river, for that at least can hold up its head. I am bruised--sorely, sadly bruised. There is no music in me now; there is a rift which lets out all the melody. Ah, me! Yet Jesus will not break me; and if He will not, then I mind little what others try to do. O sweet and compassionate Lord, I nestle down beneath Thy protection and forget my bruises! Truly I am also fit to be likened to "the smoking flax," whose light is gone, and only its smoke remains. I fear I am rather a nuisance than a benefit. My fears tell me that the Devil has blown out my light and left me an obnoxious smoke, and that my Lord will soon put an extinguisher upon me. Yet I perceive that though there were snuffers under the law, there were no extinguishers, and Jesus will not quench me; therefore, I am hopeful. Lord, kindle me anew and cause me to shine forth to Thy glory and to the extolling of Thy tenderness. View more daily devotionals online. ...
