I like to take the chance to talk directly to the development community as often as I can.  I commonly use outlets such as this blog, but sometimes I get the opportunity to speak out loud instead of through my keyboard via sites like Channel9 or .NET Rocks! .  I had the chance to talk to Richard Campbell and Carl Franklin last week on their weekly broadcast of .NET Rocks! – an internet audio show for .NET developers.  This is a great show that has a wide range of topics from introductory information to some deeply technical talks.  The viewership is just amazing as well with over a million downloads per show.   In this show, we mostly talked about my career at Microsoft from the early days of working on OS/2 and Windows NT to today running Developer division and what it is like to lead a large software development organization.  You can listen to the recording here .  It was fun to Chat with these guys and I look forward to doing it again in the future.   Namaste! ...

What's the C# team up to these days? Who's on the C# 4.0 design team, anyway? With the looming problem of manycore facing developers now and certainly in the near future (to a much greater extent - programming for 80 core (asymmetric to boot) processors, anyone?). I thought it was time to find out what Anders et al are working on to get a clear sense of C#'s near (and not-so-near) future so I asked if I could come to one of their design meetings to have an informal Chat (are we ever formal on C9?) and meet the people behind the next iteration of the most popular .NET programming language. There are some new faces (and some old ones (not in terms of age, mind you ). As expected, merging functional constructs into imperative C# are still top of mind for the C# design team. Here, you'll meet some new programming language gurus and some old time Niners (you'll recall the great Eric Lippert. He was in fact the very first Developer we interviewed for C9 back in 2004 - even though his was not the first interview posted, it was the first one shot and the one where Lenn, Jeff, Scoble, Bryn and myself looked at each other and said "wow, we are on to something here!".). C# 4.0 will contain many new features that will help developers be, yeah, you've heard it before, more productive. There's also some very interesting work going on with adding dynamic constructs to the language, which is of course very interesting given the static nature of the C ...

TREVISO, Italy - In recent months we've witnessed an interesting evolution as location-based mobile services have stretched their tendrils into new spaces - social networking ( Plazes ), conversation ( Nokia Chat ), and even in combating CO2 emissions ( we:offset ). So it's encouraging to see yet another Developer take a different approach to context aware services. Dubbed UbiSafe, this location-based service has been designed to help ensure people with special needs, children, or elderly remain safe within a designated area, using GPS tracking technology. This is the last nugget of mobile software we're showcasing of those chosen as part of the 2008 Forum Nokia Innovation Series initiative. Briana Francavilla, head of Marketing & Communication for Ubiest, the company responsible for UbiSafe, gives an interesting demo of the application in action. Watch the full video here... Namco-Bandai has released information on a pre-order gift DVD, entitled Tales Channel DVD. A rough translation reveals that it contains a artwork gallery, and some sort of drama component, likely a small Chat drama like some of the previous pre-order DVD's. A screenshot of it can be found on the Tales of Vesperia Developer's Blog. It will be uploaded to the Gallery either later today or early tomorrow (I'm busy w/ IRL stuff this afternoon. ; )). After his recent Chat with game pirates , independent Developer Cliff Harris of Positech Games muses on pricing structure of games, as 'cost' was listed as a major reason for piracy. As he points out, plenty of other products have a wide continuum that ranges from 'economy' to 'deluxe'; games can often be divided into 'normal' and 'collectors' editions. Why can't we go a bit further, he asks: Rather than just a normal and a collectors edition, shouldn't we go further? The idea of being able to pay for gameplay advantage in an online game is hideous, but some Asian MMOs have done very well by charging players for cosmetic improvements. The idea of 'free game, charge people for hats' is much talked about in industry circles. There’s no reason why this can't be extended in a different way. Take a game like Call of Duty 4 . I loved it, and enjoyed it online and off. I'd have happily paid £50 rather than £30 for it. But some people ONLY wanted it for online play. Some of them might have used voice Chat (I don't bother) and maybe some of them could only run it on low-resolution or detail. Why do we all pay the same price? Conversely I hate paying for the campaigns in Company of Heroes . I never play them, just skirmish and online. I've found a lot of people to be suspicious of the microtransaction model in games, mostly for fear of poorer service and/or nickel and diming to death. I think the ability to pay for just what you want is ni ...

Filed under: Utilities , Macintosh , Social Software Facile is a Facebook desktop app for Mac, modestly described by the Developer as "like Twitterrific for Facebook, but uglier." We don't think it's particularly ugly, actually, and it's a neat way to track friends' status updates. It even supports Growl notifications. With Facebook Chat being integrated into more desktop apps , there seems to be a demand for access to Facebook features without the website (and the ads). Facile makes Facebook status updates more meaningful and useful, because you can get them as they happen. If apps like this are widely adopted, we'll definitely think of keeping our Facebook status more current. Heck, with Twitter's current API limitations, maybe we'll just feed our tweets into Facebook and let Facile do the work. Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

Hello all, I'm a Flex and Flash Developer. I have developed a video Chat application which I usually deploy on 'normal' websites (ie not Ning). I'm looking for help to integrate the Chat SWF with Ning and I haven't got the time to learn the ins and outs of Ning myself at the moment. Plus I am not a PHP programmer... What I am after is a fairly simple proof of concept. My Chat SWF accepts a parameter (the user's id) via FlashVars, meaning the page that the SWF is embedded into will pass this userid to the SWF. The first task is therefore to set up a page on Ning (I have source access for my network) with my SWF on it in which the newly created page will retrieve the Ning userid (or whichever other identifier Ning uses) of the currently logged in user and pass it to the SWF . This should be trivial for someone who is familiar with Ning development. The key requirement is that the id we're passing to the SWF can be used later to retrieve the user's details (see the next section). Task two will involve the creation of a custom script (or maybe there's an API available for this on Ning) that will accept that same userid via a HTTP POST, query the Ning backend and return the user details such as username, avatar image etc etc (whatever is available) and return it. The response must be in XML format. My Chat application will then parse that XML and log the user into the Chat. I welcome any help on this and I am happy to pay for your time to get ...

With today being the iPhone 2.0 launch, there’s a lot of Chat about the new Applications Store and Apple touting the 500 third party applications available initially. Ina Fried already questioned Microsoft about how this compares to Windows Mobile, with the response being that “Microsoft has nearly 18,000” applications” and the implication that this is just the Apple Reality Distortion Field at work. I’m not convinced however. For starters Apple has a much improved experience, from finding the applications, paying and then through to downloading and installation. Apple offers one main store that is integrated into the devices themselves, with payment made easy via the regular iTunes account. Compare this to Windows Mobile users who typically have to find the programs via a search engine, see if it meets their requirements and and then pay the Developer direct. In addition, a large number of the applications offered now in the Apple store are “official” and by that I mean the developers of the service are the ones who made the iPhone app. Comparing to Windows Mobile, this isn’t always the case. Facebook, MySpace or Ebay developed applications? No such luck. Even Blackberry devices have native applications support from some of these services, which begs the question why is Windows Mobile is being omitted. (Aside, where is the Zune Windows Mobile application for controlling your PC playlist or Media Center application?) Windows Mobile 7 h ...

Filed under: RPG , Fallout 3 It's well known that Bethesda Softworks' upcoming post-apocalypse RPG Fallout 3 was in danger of being banned in Australia for its depiction of drugs in the game (an edited version of the game has now been approved by the country's ratings board). But that doesn't mean the Developer/publisher has smooth sailing in other countries where the game is being sold.In a Chat with Computer and Video Games, Bethsoft PR head Pete Hines, while dodging specific questions about the Australian situation, did state, "The frustrating thing for us is that the standards and rules can be so varied across territories, that we work with five or six ratings agencies and each one has different 'hot buttons'." As an example he stated, "In one place nudity is a big deal but violence is fine, and in another place drugs are a problem but nudity is fine." In the end, Hines stated that such issues don't really affect their development plans, saying. "We just go through and make the game that we want to make."%Gallery-20726%   Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Filed under: FPS , Far Cry 2 If you were looking forward to test driving Ubisoft 's upcoming first person shooter Far Cry 2 in a demo before it's release, we have some bad news. According to a new Chat in Eurogamer Ubisoft rep Clint Hocking has revealed that the Developer/publisher has no current plans to provide such a demo. According to Hocking, even if they were to release a demo that made players check out a small portion of the game's enviroment he claims that there would still be 8 to 10 hours of gameplay in that small section and the decision is not to give out a free demo with that much gameplay. This is not the the first time Ubisoft has made thi kind of move. They also didn't release a demo for 2007's Assassin's Creed for similar reasons. %Gallery-23912%   Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...
