While many Mavericks have spent much of the summer in Dallas, those that bed down elsewhere in the off-season are getting back to town this week. Physical exams are this weekend and the scuttlebutt around the Mavs' office is that all of the players are in good condition with no serious problems or rehabilitations expected. Jerry Stackhouse, word has it, is in terrific shape, leaner and stronger than ever. Perhaps that's in anticipation of a larger role this season under new coach Rick carlisle. And he's not the only one. Devean George has come back strong and, apparently, injury free. He's one of the wild cards for this season and, if he's physically fit, there is little doubt he will be a key part of the rotation, if not a starter. By the way, our best guess for a starting five as training camp evolves starting Monday: Dirk Nowitzki, Josh Howard, Jason Kidd, Jason Terry and Erick Dampier. And that's strictly a guess. ... Yeah, I know, it's slim pickings. The Mavs' only draft pick will play in Europe this season. They stayed out of the trade market. And they only had the mid-level exception and minimum contracts to lure free agents to the AAC. The Mavs clearly believe a coaching change will solve a lot of problems, but this post is about on-court personnel. That leaves you to choose between the re-signings of some reserves (J.J. Barea, Devean George and Antoine Wright), the return of DeSagana Diop or the no-risk deal for Gerald Green. Give me the Green deal. At least he has the talent to be special. ... The season is still two months away, but most of the rosters are set, barring the requisite Michael Jordan comeback rumor (just kidding, but only a little). We have an idea where our team stands, but we can't really know unless we discuss everyone else. In that spirit, I'm going to throw up a "competition discussion" thread for each of the other 29 teams over the next month or so. We'll go in alphabetical order from A to Z. Today's team: Dallas. Last year's record: 51-31 In: DeSagana Diop, Gerald Green, Shan Foster Out: Tyronn Lue, Antoine Wright, Jamaal Magloire. Projected starting lineup: Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, Josh Howard, Dirk Nowitzki, DeSagana Diop. Key themes: What difference will new coach Rick Carlisle make? Does Jason Kidd have anything left in the tank? How does Josh Howard respond after a tumultuous summer that continues to this day ? Is Dirk Nowitzki beginning to slow down? Why in God's name did they re-sign Devean George? Who exactly do they expect to produce off the bench, other than Brandon Bass? Does the return of DeSagana Diop help at all? Let's be clear: Dallas is no longer a championship contender. With the trade between the Dallas Mavericks and New Jersey Nets FINALLY completed yesterday, Jason Frederick Kidd (JFK) makes his return to the team that he spent his first three-and-a-half seasons with—the Dallas Mavericks. The modified deal still featured Jason Kidd and Devin Harris as its main pieces (along with New Jersey's Malik Allen and Dallas' DeSagana Diop, Maurice Ager, their first round selections in 2008 and 2010, and a cool three million in greenbacks). But dropped Jerry "loose lips" Stackhouse and Devean George in lieu of Trenton Hassell and the unofficially retired Keith Van Horn. He signed a third contract with Dallas, even after providing abundantly mediocre production in the first two, and it wasn't just a token minimum-wage gig either -- he got a two-year deal worth $3.2 million. Or maybe it was a belated reward for his efforts to try to save Dallas from making the Jason Kidd trade. While the Mavs were busy locking up unproductive swingmen, they re-upped Antoine Wright for two years and $3.6 million, too. This announcement was a bit of a surprise to me, given that it came right after I talked to an exec who was on the fence about whether to offer Wright a deal for the minimum. I don't really get it either John, but if you have followed the Mavs closely the past few summers, these moves don't really come to much of a surprise.
