Taking a lead out of the PFT guys, I decided to examine the site's hits for the month of August. Let me preface something by saying I've never done this for the hits; I love to write and the Bengals are my favorite NFL team. It's like mixing mashed potatoes and corn, or baked beans and macaroni and cheese. I'm in my sixth year blogging this team and each post has been a blast -- though some seasons more than others. I was blown away by you guys, making August 2008 the biggest month in Cincy Jungle's lifetime. When I started this site, I was averaging 4,232 page views a month, blowing away my August 2008 total by nearly 1600%! Thanks guys for reading. Seriously. It means a lot. I have more stuff to get through today. So here goes. Matt Millen doesn't appear impressed with Rudi Johnson. "He’s got some decisions to make, too. We’re where we’re at. If he’s comfortable with it, fine. If he’s not comfortable with it … But there’s other things too. We’ve just got to get through some other decisions ." It would seem that Rudi is looking to become a starting feature back; my guess as to the "decision" he has to make, and getting "comfortable with it." Who knows what Matt means. A part of me wonders if Rudi Johnson wasn't convinced he'd get cut by the Bengals and didn't prepare for the eventual job interviews. However, Geoff Hobson writes that a " league source said running back Rudi Johnson is going to be reunited with quarterback Jon Kitn ...

Kevin Smith’s stock just took a sharp drive. Yes, he’s still starting but you better believe the Lions are going to give away a number of his carries to Johnson. After a few hours of cautious speculation about Matt Millen's removal, it was finally revealed that Detroit Lions' owner William Clay Ford did actually have to fire him in the early hours of Tuesday morning . The Detroit Free Press has a surprisingly mesmerizing photo retrospective titled " The Matt Millen Era " which is where I snagged the photo featured above. That one just seems to be an appropriate visual metaphor for Millen's reign as Lion's president. Of course Lions fans are deeply saddened by the news , holding candle light vigils and vehemently protesting Ford's rash decision. But this move will probably benefit both the team and Millen in the long run. The Lions faithful will finally have someone else to blame for their sustained lousiness or they can actually get a person in there to fix it. And Millen will...well. At least he will have more time to cut the grass. ************* Tonight: It's time to curl up and watch the Phillies' game and see what explodes first — their season or their fanbase by way of hot dog terrorists. The weather was gorgeous.  A slight breeze, lots of sun, and not too warm.  U of M pulled a huge comeback yesterday and Michigan State won big against their opponent.  Plus the Lion's fired Matt Millen this week.  This was the first full week of Detroit's new mayor and the old one is just a piece of history.  So it is a great week in Metro Detroit !  Even on the real estate side it has been good.  I received a good short sale listing from Active Rain, got one purchase offer accepted, and another short sale offer in.  And smoothed over some ruffled feathers on a home inspection and closing.  It seems I am working with a lot of short sales.  I think a lot of short sales are a waste of time but sometimes the banks do cooperate and make it all worthwhile.  Sometimes that small percentage of completions make all the work worthwhile. Well tomorrow's Monday and I hope the weekend was just a sampling of what is yet to come. May the week bring an unexpected welcome surprise.   Russ Ravary "your local neighborhood information source" Metro Detroit Real Estate Livonia, Canton, Northville, Plymouth, Novi Real Estate    ...

Frank Solich could only shake his head last season as opposing offenses set records against the Bobcat defense. Two years ago, Ohio’s defense carried the team to the Mid-American Conference championship game, but last season the unit became the weak spot on a 6-6 team. Wyoming, Kent State, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Toledo and Akron all scored more than 30 points on the Bobcats and the unit gave up an average of 29.9 points per game. The Bobcat defense went from fourth in the conference in total defense to sixth last season and from third in rushing defense to eighth. But thanks to the team’s two new defensive tackles, the defense seems to have regained its 2006 form. Ohio is ranked first in total defense and fourth in rushing defense in the MAC, despite playing high-powered offenses like Northwestern and Central Michigan. “I like the makeup of our personnel on defense,” Solich said. “We’re not getting blown off the ball, there’s no gaps. “The strength and athleticism of our two inside guys really shows. That’s probably the main reason we’re playing so well.” After losing both of their starters at the position, including current Detroit Lion Landon Cohen, the last position the team figured to be strong at was defensive tackle. “You could be a little surprised after what happened last year,” defensive tackle Ernie Hodge said. “(Last year’s defense) had all kinds of records broken against them and things like that, but coming into ...

Given a rare chance to start, J.T. O'Sullivan nearly doubled his career passing yardage total in one game last week. The journeyman quarterback will now try to haunt his former team this Sunday, when his San Francisco 49ers play host to the Detroit Lions at Candlestick Park. O'Sullivan came out on top of a three-player race in training camp to earn San Francisco's No. 1 QB spot, beating out former 2005 first-overall pick Alex Smith in the process. O'Sullivan didn't wow critics in a Week 1 loss to Arizona, throwing for 195 yards with an interception in his first career start. However, with Smith now on injured reserve due to complications from his surgically-repaired right shoulder, O'Sullivan was again under center versus Seattle last Sunday and threw for 321 yards and a score in a 33-30 overtime victory. Counting his Week 1 performance, the UC Davis product had posted just 343 total passing yards in seven games. A bulk of those came last year with Detroit, when he threw for 148 yards in four games of mop-up time. O'Sullivan won't be the only former Lion itching for a victory against his former club on Sunday. San Francisco's offensive coordinator, Mike Martz, spent the previous two seasons with Detroit in the same role. ...

We're heading into week 4 of the season, and the Eagles will travel to the Windy City to face the Chicago Bears.  Let's look at the matchup, Bears offense, Eagles defense.           In order for the Bears offense to be successful, they need run the football successfully. The responsibility falls on the shoulders of their offensive line, and their running backs. With just having played 3 games this season the Bears have run for 456 yards on 105 attempts (4.3 yards/carry average). This would indicate that the offensive line is doing a good job opening holes for the running. Of the 105 attempts, rookie Matt Forte has taken 73 of them, and gained 304 yards on the ground, and is 4th overall in rushing. In addition Forte has caught 13 passes for 105 yards. Behind Forte, the Bears have former Detroit Lion Kevin Jones, Garrett Wolfe, and Adrian Peterson. Kevin Jones could be a good compliment to Forte, provided that his foot has healed after suffering a Liz Frank fracture. Garrett Wolfe is a change of pace back, but is undersized.                  If the Bears are able to rush for 100 yards or more per game, they will make Kyle Orton's job of managing the football game much easier. The Bears aren't relying on Kyle Orton to win football games. They are relying on him no to lose them. In order for Kyle to manage the game effectively he needs his offensive line to protect him, the running game to be productive, and his receivers t ...

If you don't usually read through these, I highly recommend at least skipping to the short profile on Leo Nomellini toward the end. Four months ago, I didn't even know this guy's name. Even after Fooch did a front page profile on him for our All-Time Team, I still didn't realize just how good he was. Turns out he's just one of the greatest players in NFL History.  Date: Opponent: Score: Record: Opponent's Record: Sept. 27 Philadelphia Eagles W: 14-24 1-0 0-1 Oct. 4 Los Angeles Rams W: 0-34 2-0 0-2 Oct. 11 @ Green Bay Packers L: 20-21 2-1 3-0 Oct. 18 @ Detroit Lions W: 34-13 3-1 0-4 Oct. 25 Chicago Bears W: 17-20 4-1 1-4 Nov. 1 Detroit Lions W: 7-33 5-1 1-5 Nov. 8 @ Los Angeles Rams W: 24-16 6-1 2-5 Nov. 15 @ Chicago Bears L: 3-14 6-2 4-4 Nov. 22 @ Baltimore Colts L: 14-45 6-3 6-3 Nov. 29 @ Cleveland Brown W: 21-20 7-3 6-4 Dec. 5 Baltimore Colts L: 34-14 7-4 8-3 Dec. 13 Green Bay Packers L: 36-14 7-5 7-5 Head Coach: Red Hickey Key Losses: HC Frankie Albert, TE Gordie Soltau (Retire) Key Additions: No Key Additions Discussion: Leo Nomellini is a legend in the history of the NFL, but he's also a bit of a forgotten name among modern fans. For a guy who was named the top defensive tackle in the first 50 years of the entire NFL, I don't really know many people who would even recognize his name. So, in honor of "The Lion," we're going in two directions with this one: 1) Toughest player you've ever seen play the game, and 2) Most underra ...
