And the Desert Blooms Written by Iris Johansen Paperback , 288 pages | Bantam | Fiction - Romance | $6.99 | December 30, 2008 | 978-0-553-59230-6 (0-553-59230-0) #1 New York Times bestseller Iris Johansen pairs an exotic locale with an irresistible man in this classic love story that proves anything is possible when a woman knows in her heart that it’s right…. Don’t look for me. I’ll come back when I’m ready. Pandora Madchen wrote those words when she ran off six years ago. In that time she’d become a sensation with the rock group Nemesis, toured the world, and grown up, but she never forgot the promise she made herself. Now Pandora was ready to return to the Desert state of Sedikhan and the man she’d loved too soon and too much. Sheik Philip El Kabbar was a businessman whose power and influence extended throughout the world—but for six long years he’d been unable to find the woman he still considered it his duty to protect. She’d come back on her own terms and to take the kind of erotic gamble that Philip always won. Only this time he wasn’t sure that in winning they wouldn’t both lose what matters most. Or that in loving her, he wouldn’t be hurting them both. ... Source: www.iafd.com --- 34 days ago

By By RAQUEL MARIA DILLON -- A moderate earthquake struck a sparsely populated area of the Mojave Desert on Friday night and could be felt from Southern California to the fringes of Nevada and Arizona. No injuries or damage were reported. The 5.1-magnitude temblor struck at 8:18 p.m. just outside Ludlow near Interstate 40 in San Bernardino County, about 120 miles east of Los Angeles, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The initial reports measured the quake at 5.5-magnitude. "The ground was rolling underneath but it was very light. Nothing," said Jeremy Chestnut, 20, who was at a Dairy Queen in Ludlow when the quake struck. "I was standing in front of an ice cream machine and it makes the ground shake, too." ... Robert C. Koehler:Seventeen years and three wars later, the ghosts of Operation Desert Storm — the cancers, the chronic headaches and dizziness, the fibromyalgia, the ALS and so much more that have stalked returning vets, whose medical claims have been denied, ignored, relegated to the paper shredder — have just gotten a reality upgrade."The extensive body of scientific research now available consistently indicates that Gulf War illness is real, that it is the result of neurotoxic exposures during Gulf War deployment, and that few veterans have recovered or substantially improved with time."Thus concludes the 452-page report of the Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses, presented last week to Veterans Affairs Secretary James Peake. Suddenly the government has several hundred thousand medical claims emanating from a few months in 1991 it has to start taking seriously — and that's the easy part. ...
