The Derby Recreation Commission held the annual Kid’s Fishing Derby this past Saturday, July 26.    Over 50 kids participated and had a great time catching fish, both big and small.  There was a good mixture of regular anglers and novices. From Spiderman fishing poles to serious tackle boxes, equipment varied, but everyone seemed to enjoy the beautiful summer morning.  Aviator Church volunteers mingled amongst the kids, helping with bait and weighing the catches. After fishing time was over, the Derby Optimists served a hot dog lunch and the kids anxiously anticipated the tabulation of the fishing results. Prizes donated by Wal Mart included fishing supplies, coolers and lawn chairs. Awards went to the following: Ages 5-8 • Biggest Perch: Jaraye Brown; • Biggest Catfish: Michelle Sherrow; • Smallest Catfish:  Bryson Maphet; First Person to Catch Four Fish: Jaraye Brown. Ages 9-12 Biggest and Smallest Catfish: Sabrina Sherrow. Ages 13-19 Biggest Perch: Mari Hoffman; Biggest Catfish: Emily Hornbeck; First Person to Catch Four Fish: Emily Hornback.     ...

Hundreds of Derby kids, from babies to grandparents, came out Saturday evening to attend Aviator Church and 3:16 Sk8 Park Ministry’s End-of-Summer Bash held at the Derby Skate Park. “We wanted to show the kids at the skate park that they are an important part of our community and that we care about them,” Aviator Church’s lead pastor Joe Boyd said. “We also wanted to invite families to get involved in the life of the park because investing in the lives of young people is a great use of our time.  We also wanted to introduce the kids to several leaders in our community including our police officers, fire fighters, and city officials.” The event included free food, free prizes, inflatables, cotton candy, snocones, and live music by several local artists. The Derby Police Department provided barriers to provide space for the event and Derby Fire & Rescue firefighters came out and provided water to keep kids cool and offer on-site first aid. “The event was designed for the families of our community who have kids who skate,” Boyd said. “Our church has a heart for reaching the younger generation. We discovered that there was a great need for adult involvement at the skate park.” So Boyd and his church decided to partner with 3:16 Sk8 Park Ministry in reaching kids at the skate park.  “3:16 is doing an excellent job at the park,” Boyd said. “We understand that they can do more for our community with the help of community partners.” Derby ...

From the moment the first group of cars roared out in front of the grandstand, all eyes were on #357. Local officials had promised an exciting start to the 146th Wayne County Fair with a Friday night of demolition Derby fun...and Jim Warnott was just the man who could deliver on that promise. Warnott, who is sponsored by Wally’s Workshop, made a grand entrance behind the wheel of his jet black machine. The SRO crowd roared its approval as Warnott gunned the engine and waved to his fans. Warnott had stenciled “Sasquatch” in big, neon-green letters along both sides of the car. It was clear from the opening gun that “Sasquatch” was the car to beat in the opening heat. This mythical metal beast stomped the competition even as Jim stomped the accelerator. One by one, “Sasquatch” reduced the other cars to smoking piles of crushed steel. Before long, only three other entries remained mobile and qualified for the next round. It was a wild start to a crowd-pleasing night of demolition Derby. Donna Branning, spokesperson for the event summed it up perfectly, saying: “The fans want six heats of total destruction!” And that’s exactly what they got. Friday night’s festivities included 50 competitors. This first demo Derby of the Wayne County fair featured three heats of full-size cars, nine compact car heats, a consolation heat and a grand finale. From the deafening roar of engines and enthusiastic cheers from the grandstand, it looked as though “Th ...

It took only about 30 seconds to rescue Knox County Fair demolition Derby driver Eddie Bush from his burning car Saturday night, but it was the longest 30 seconds of his mother’s life. “It was heart-wrenching,” said Laurie Bush, mother of the 26-year-old veteran driver. “It happened so fast. In my mind ... it just took forever.” According to Laurie Bush, her son’s engine blew during the race, sparking an oil fire. Eddie Bush, who is a third-generation car racer and has been racing on his own for about 11 years, had freed himself from the seat belt and was halfway out of the car when firefighters arrived to assist him. He was wearing a fireproof racing jacket, something he bought after 35-year-old Kevin Lyles of Beardstown was killed June 28 in a fiery crash at the Macomb Speedway. Eddie Bush suffered second- and third-degree burns to his face and knee, but none of his clothes caught fire. “We are so, so lucky that that’s all” that happened, Laurie Bush said. “He knows how bad he could’ve been hurt.” His mother, who was filming the race at the time of the accident, kicked off her sandals and ran toward the track. But the firefighters were faster. They pulled her son out of the car and extinguished the flames. The racer was treated at the scene, even asking the paramedics to “please hurry because he didn’t want to miss the end of the race,” Laurie Bush said. He may miss some work and his car will need some repairs, but Eddie Bush plans to ...
