…and continuing from the last two posts for today… Along with Andrew Bacevich, Howard Zinn, and Tom Engelhardt at TomDispatch.com, Chalmers Johnson is one of my favourite American critics of American empire. In an article that is being reproduced across a range of sites, Johnson argues in “We Have the Bailout Money–We’re Spending It on War” [...] ...

When we flew into Kigali, Rwanda, on August 7, 2008, we had visited three East African nations, and after Rwanda we would travel to three more. Compared with some of the cities we had already visited, Kigali’s smooth, newly-paved roads, (relatively) orderly traffic patterns and clean roadsides were impressive. ...

According to this splendid nest of football gossip and humour, Dennis Wise's dream team - which was found after a scrap of paper fell out of his pocket in an East End pie and mash shop - for Newcastle United includes Gary Oldman in defence with Danny Baker up front and Dick Van Dyke as the the new caretaker manager. While the above may not be wholly true, if you're concerned about Gary Lineker's girlfriend or the latest WAG standings this is the place to keep up. Elsewhere there's news, rumours, videos and a "Sporn" gallery of sporting photos that could be mistaken for something mildly unsettling. Rasor's Blog has the latest changes to the depth chart up. There are a couple of interesting moves happening before the Ball State game. http://www.ohiomm.com/blogs/zips/2008/09/a...g-running-back/ AA being named the starting RB is surprising. He has been solid, but I thought Dennis Kennedy played better overall the past two games. I don't think this will change our game much, and DK and Andrew Johnson will still take plenty handoffs. Our DL just keeps getting thinner and thinner. Andrew Johnson is replacing Andre Jones as the secondary Kick Returner, since Jones is so busy doing everything else. ...

"In 1989, we changed some things. Jimmy Johnson went to the Dallas Cowboys and we brought the spread offense in with Dennis Erickson and I was the only coach who stayed on the staff. We struggled on offense with this offense working for the first few games and we beat Arizona 7-6 or 8-7 and we had to get a safety to beat them. We ended up playing pretty good against a Florida State team in the middle of the season, which was the game of the year usually back then. We won the game and... ...

The Siena Research Institute has polled four more key state Senate races and the results legitimize something Republicans have been saying for several weeks now: Democratic Sen. Bill Stachowski (58th SD) is in trouble. Stachowski trails his GOP opponent, Dennis Delano , a local law enforcement hero, by 13 percentange points. (49-36, with 15 percent undecided). In addition, two Democratic challengers - Kathy Konst (59th SD) and David Nachbar (55th SD) - are failing to connect against the GOP incumbents they're trying to oust, Sen. Dale Volker and Sen. Jim Alesi, respectively. Both Volker and Alesi have comfortable double-digit leads. This isn't good news for the Democrats as they fight to take control of the Senate next month, and will no doubt provide a much-needed infusion of optimism for the Republicans. One positive piece of the poll for the Democrats: Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer (37th SD) is more than holding her own against Republican Liz Feld, leading 61-24 with 15 percent undecided, despite an onslaught of attacks and Mayor Bloomberg's endorsement of Feld . But remember: The Democrats only need to win two seats (or, if they lose Stachowski, three) to take the majority. The last Siena poll of six state Senate races showed two Republican incumbents - Sen. Serphin Maltese and Sen. Caesar Trunzo - in trouble, while the two most freshman Democratic senators - Darrel Aubertine and Craig Johnson - both had leads over at least 20 percent ...

Prager H2: Dennis talks to Kaylene Johnson, Alaska-based journalist and author of Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned the Political Establishment Upside Down. Johnson has some very interesting and surprising answers to questions like “why did Sarah Palin attend so many colleges?, “why did she elope?” and “why did she enter a beauty contest?” These are questions that seem to be obsessing the liberal media right now. ...

Early-afternoon rain in New York last Sunday turned TBS' usual 30-minute pregame Major League Baseball show into a 90-minute telethon of statistics and playoff predictions. But it also was practice for host Ernie Johnson Jr. and studio analysts Cal Ripken Jr. and Dennis Eckersley , who were together on the Turner Sports set in Midtown for just the second time. The three — forced to stall until a pivotal New York Mets and Florida Marlins' matchup began — are TBS' faces for the postseason, which starts Wednesday. This is the second year of TBS' baseball deal, which gives it TV rights to the entire first round of the playoffs and one of the two league championships. The package also involves airing an exclusive national telecast and the studio show on Sunday afternoons during the regular season. ...

The 3rd Congressional District includes the suburbs of Republican-rich Johnson County and the largely blue-collar, Democrat-rich older areas of Wyandotte County as well as eastern Douglas County, including the University of Kansas campus. Registered Republicans account for about 43 percent of the district’s voters, Democrats 31 percent. The seat was traditionally held by Republicans until Dennis Moore won it in 1998. ...

Republican Nick Jordan is pursuing a classic turn-the-rascals-out strategy in trying to unseat Democratic Rep. Dennis Moore in the state's 3rd Congressional District. Moore doesn't deny Washington has problems, but he maintains he's done a good job of taking care of his constituents in Johnson and Wyandotte counties and part of Douglas County. He's seeking a sixth term in the Nov. 4 general election. The district's most populous county, Johnson, is a GOP stronghold, but Moore has made a political career of persuading moderate Republicans to vote for him. Jordan is hoping to bring them back to the GOP. "The bottom line is the system is broken in Washington, D.C.," he said. "Washington has done more to change Dennis Moore than Dennis Moore has done to change Washington." But Moore isn't worried. ...
