The Brazilian Women’s Group of Somerville was honored for its political and cultural contributions to the Brazilian community at a seminar in Denmark
The BWG’s cooperative Vida Verde, in association with Tufts University, was invited to present its work and experience in working with immigrant populations in a seminar on immigrants in the cleaning trade in Copenhagen.
“The Danish team which invited us is completing the first year of a three-year project on immigrant house cleaners in Denmark,” said David Gute, a professor at Tufts University, and the project’s principal investigator. “This project is viewed as a first step in reaching out to immigrant populations in Denmark.”
The BWG formed Vida Verde, a Brazilian house cleaning co-operative aimed at recruiting house cleaners to use environmentally friendly products. Formerly based in Somerville, the agency operates out of Allston.
“It was a very important moment for us, since we are a small organization working with volunteers, with small money and having to do a lot due to the climate against immigrants in the country,” said Heloisa Galvao, president and co-founder of the BWG. “We felt proud that our work was recognized.”
Meetings were held over two days, and in the end may have proved to be meaningful and well worth the trip.
