In a Los Angeles Times analysis of the October 7 presidential Debate, staff writer Doyle McManus wrote that Sen. Barack Obama "seemed to prove" conservative economist Jude Wanniski's theory that Republicans are the "Daddy Party" and Democrats are the "Mommy Party" by "laying out the more expansive government role in caring for middle-class Americans" and "mention[ing] not only his mother, but his wife and grandmother too." In doing so, McManus recycled a standard gender cliché frequently used by the media to discuss Republicans and Democrats. But while asserting that Obama "seemed to prove" that the Democrats are the "Mommy Party," McManus failed to note any of Obama's statements about foreign policy during the Debate -- statements that, according to Time magazine's Amy Sullivan , were "tougher foreign policy rhetoric than Americans are used to hearing from Democratic nominees." Later in the analysis, McManus wrote that "McCain repeated oft-made charges that Obama was ... a big spender who would raise taxes," without noting that McCain's claim is false. As Obama noted during the Debate, under his tax plan , "If you make less than a quarter of a million dollars a year, you will not see a single dime of your taxes go up. If you make $200,000 a year or less, your taxes will go down." But it's not just Obama who disputes McCain's claim; McCain's chief economic adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, has also reportedly said it is inaccurate to ...

The Barnstable County Commissioners’ race is one of the few contested races on the Sept. 16 primary ballot and is drawing a lot of interest from Democrats – five of them in fact. The top two Democratic vote-getters in the primary will then secure places on the ballot along with two Republicans, Ric Barros and Brad Crowell in the general election Nov. 4. There will be two county commissioner seats filled in the November election. Incumbent Democrat Lance Lambros is seeking re-election and Republican Mary LeClair is not seeking another term. All five of the Democrats will be featured at a Debate Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Yarmouth Senior Center. WickedLocalCapeCod.com is jointly hosting the Debate along with its newspaper affiliates ( The Cape Codder , The Register , The Provincetown Banner , Harwich Oracle , Bourne Courier , Falmouth Bulletin , and Sandwich Broadsider ), as well as the Cape Cod area League of Women Voters. The candidates – Lambros, Thomas Bernardo, Mary Pat Flynn, Sheila Lyons and Gregory Milne – will Debate the issues and answer questions from editors of this newspaper as well as take questions from the audience. The League of Women Voters is moderating the event. “One of the League’s primary missions is to have the most informed electorate possible,” said Judith Thomas, voter service chairwoman for the LWV. “Debates are certainly one important way to accomplish this mission. Democrats have “so successfully mocked, derided and lowered expectations for Palin in Thursday night’s VP Debate that if she doesn’t drool or speak in tongues, many millions still open to persuasion will be impressed,” wrote Andrew Malcolm of the Los Angeles Times. “Al Gore’s campaign made the exact same mistake going into the 2000 debates. The televised Debate last night between the two front-running candidates for governor of North Carolina -- Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue, a Democrat, and Republican Pat McCrory, mayor of Charlotte and a Duke Energy consultant -- delivered an interesting and contentious exchange on offshore drilling. WRAL-TV excluded Libertarian candidate Mike Munger, who chairs Duke University's political science department, because of low poll numbers. With Congress expected to take up a proposal this week to allow limited additional offshore drilling in exchange for an elimination of oil company tax breaks and support for alternative energy sources, members who've flip-flopped on the issue and now support expanded drilling might find instructive the unfortunate the experience of Perdue, who got hammered by McCrory for saying just three weeks ago that she was "100 percent" opposed to offshore drilling for North Carolina but now says she supports it. McCrory has also been airing campaign ads criticizing her for the shift. Perdue's dancing around the issue during the Debate was annoying. It clearly exasperated moderator Pam Saulsby, a popular WRAL news anchor, who during an exchange about Perdue's shift on drilling over the course of three weeks finally exclaimed, "Either it happened or it didn't happen!" Perdue's answer on drilling also got a thumbs-down from reporter and commentator Laura Leslie at WUNC, who accused her of "fumbling" the question. Her ...
