photo: Getty Images A few hundred Florida Democrats endured 18-hour bus rides to come to Washington this morning to demand that their state’s presidential primary votes be counted. ``Count our votes!’’ they chanted outside their party’s national headquarters. It was an odd demonstration, motivated largely by anger from the 2000 election that brought George W. Bush to the White House. It wasn’t always clear whether the Floridians were directing their anger at Bush, at the national party, at the ghosts of 2000 or all of the above. Their main mission was to urge the national party to seat the state’s delegates at the nominating convention in August. The party has stripped Florida of delegates as punishment for holding a Jan. 29 primary against party rules. Today’s rally, led by the League of United Latin American Citizens, took place on the same spot where party chairman Howard Dean vowed early this month to make every effort to seat Florida delegates. Dean, while trying to make peace with the biggest swing state in the election, said any arrangement for seating delegates would have be fair to candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. DNC workers handed out bottles of water and flyers to the Demonstrators. Leaders of the rally were invited to come inside afterwards to meet with party staff. ``This is family,’’ remarked DNC spokesman Luis Miranda, who hails from Broward County. ``Howard Dean promised that we would be ...

With rallies being held in other cities in the country and world, the marchers gathered at Union Square and then headed down Broadway to the the Jacob Javits Federal Office Building, where immigrations officials have offices. 2008-04-07 Demonstrators PROTEST IRAQ WAR IN HARTFORD HARTFORD, Conn. ( AP ) and mdash; Waving signs, citing casualty numbers and getting arrested, anti-war Demonstrators rallied in a steady rain across Connecticut on Wednesday to mark the fifth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Five people were arrested in Hartford and taken away peacefully in handcuffs as they sat in front of an entrance to the federal courthouse on Main Street and read names of U.S. military personnel and Iraqi children killed in the war. Among the five were Jim Barron, 80, of New Haven, and his minister, the Rev. Kathleen McTigue of the Unitarian Society of New Haven. Also arrested were Caroline Bridgeman-Rees, 85, of Hamden, Mark Colville, 46, of New Haven, and his teenage daughter, Keely Colville. They were charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct, and were expected to be released later in the day. Other war protests were held in Bridgeport, Greenwich, Willimantic and Woodbridge. Demonstrators rallied outside the offices of U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman in Hartford and U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays in Bridgeport. Both lawmakers have been outspoken in their support the war. The Hartford protest, organized by the interfaith group Reclaiming the Prophetic Voice, began at Center Church, where a crowd of more than 100 condemned the war and its $500 billion cost. They also paid their respects to the nearly 4,000 U.S. lives lost, the tens of tho ...

2008-04-07 Demonstrators RALLY FOR A HEALTHIER PLANET By Donald W. Meyers / Salt Lake Tribune SALT LAKE CITY, UT and mdash; Some came to demand clean air. Others wanted U.S. troops brought home from Iraq. And some pressed the case for affordable health care. Yet they all braved the chilly weather Saturday for the Rally for a Better Planet held on the City-County Building grounds in Salt Lake City - a three-pronged protest with the ultimate goal of social justice, organizers said. "Today, the labor representative shakes hands with the feminist, the gay activist stands with the environmentalist and the Muslim makes friends with the Mormon," said Troy Williams, KRCL radio host and one of two emcees for the event. Former Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson also spoke to the crowd. He railed against the war in Iraq, national and Utah news media that he said was complicit in covering up the Bush administration's wrongdoing and apathetic voters who foster what he sees as a defective political system. "We cannot have change if we continue to elect different people from the same two political parties," said Anderson, who served two terms as a Democrat. And, he said, the only way to achieve change is to stop blaming others and act for change. One symbolic act for change was the presence of 350 bike riders, led by an electric car, riding from Pioneer Square to 400 East and back several times. It highlighted ...
