Broward Democratic Chairman Mitch Ceasar and Florida Senate Minority Leader Steve Geller, D-Cooper City, are both Superdelegates to their party's presidential nominating convention. Neither has endorsed Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. But they have different takes on the weekend decision by the Democratic National Committee's Rules and Bylaws Committee decision to seat all 211 Florida delegates but give each half a vote. Ceasar, also a member of the executive board of the Democratic National Committee, was at the committee meeting in Washington, D.C., on Saturday. "Just as in life, nothing is perfect. The same applies to politics. Although I would have hoped for a different result, I think the positive aspect is that they recognized the sovereignty of Florida voters and sanctified the Jan. 29 date. ...

After Obama hit the magic number of delegates to mathematically become the Democratic presumptive nominee, Hillary Clinton gave a speech where she didn't concede as many expected her to, today Democratic leaders set a deadline on Superdelegates to choose. The fact that Hillary Clinton did not concede anything in her so called "concession speech" angered many, disappointed some and encouraged her supporters, even though they understand the race is technically over. Much news came out yesterday, first that her aides told reporters she would concede the delegation count to Obama, then that she let it be known that she is open to being offered the vice presidency spot on the Democratic ticket, then denials from her camp that she would concede the battle and then people listened to her speech and it almost seemed as if she had won the contest to hear her speak. I want to start tonight by congratulating Senator Obama and his supporters on the extraordinary race that they have run. Senator Obama has inspired so many Americans to care about politics and empowered so many more to get involved. And our party and our democracy is stronger and more vibrant as a result. So we are grateful. In her speech she made it clear that she thought she had won the popular vote and it was being ignored, which was guaranteed to keep her supporters angry and feeling she had been mistreated and that Barack Obama wasn't the "legitimate" winner, therefore even ...

Wow. That's about all I can say. In a heated exchange at tonight's S.D. Democratic Executive Board meeting in Oacoma, Hillary Clinton delegate Malcolm Chapman said--and State Chair Jack Billion confirmed--that the Clinton campaign offered a major fundraiser to the state party in exchange for two superdelegate votes. Chapman noted that he had almost "cut the deal" with the Clinton campaign. Billion said the price was "too high." He also said non-office holding Superdelegates like him had to give a lot of consideration to Sen. Tom Daschle's, Sen. Tim Johnson's, and Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin's position on the race as they are major financial benefactors to the local party. I'll post more as I learn more. The Democratic delegate selection system has received a lot of angry abuse this year. David Sirota claimed on Democracy Now today, "Democracy is really thwarted" by the Democratic party’s selection process because "party elders can thwart the will of the people" through the Superdelegates. In calling this an "outdated, antiquated system," Sirota is wrong. The delegate process in the Democratic Party is far superior to the Republican Party one, and it’s proven to be an enormous success in this election. Without the Superdelegates , the fight for the Democratic nomination could have easily continued on to the convention in August. Clinton would have fought to have her Michigan and Florida given full votes, and to have Michigan’s other delegates uncommitted rather than allocated to Obama. This could gain her 83 pledged delegates and bring her to within 32 pledged delegates of Obama. Then, because pledged delegates can technically switch sides, we would have seen a massive process of bribery and threats used by the Clinton campaign in an effort to steal a close election. Instead of a divided convention, the wave of Superdelegates are doing what they’re supposed to do, and supporting the winner of the pledged delegates. As a result, a close election will have a clear winner before the convention, and a major division within the party is being avoided. Because of the Superdelegates, the Obama campaign can focus on John McCain rather than wor ...

I am appalled at the audacity of the “so-called” Democratic Leaders and the party. You first refuse to seat the delegates of Florida and Michigan. Denying their constitutional rights under the law of one person, one vote. Why? Under the premise that they held election early and Obama’s name was not on the ballot. Yet, [...] ...

CQ Politics reported Sunday on the efforts of two supporters of Hillary Clinton, who've formed the Denver Group, a 527 organization that will lobby -- among other things -- for Clinton's name to be included in the roll call vote at the Democratic convention this summer. As the Huffington Post's Tom Edsall notes , the two people behind the Denver Group -- Heidi Li Feldman, a Georgetown Law professor, and Marc Rubin, who works in advertising -- also placed an ad in the Chicago Tribune in which they said, "Senator Clinton's name must be put in nomination. Her supporters must be allowed to make speeches on her behalf of her candidacy. There must be an honest roll call vote, not a symbolic one, so Superdelegates can cast their votes honestly, for either candidate, as their judgment, conscience and Democratic principles dictate." In the ad, the two also made repeated reference to "Democratic principle[s]" and said, "If the situation were reversed, there is no doubt there would be an outcry if Senator Obama's name were not allowed to be placed in nomination." These sentiments, which have been echoed throughout the parts of the blogosphere that still cling desperately to hope of a Clinton victory, have some factual problems. First, and most obviously, there's the assumption that Clinton even wants her name in consideration, something that would break with recent tradition and could potentially embarrass Obama and the party. She's made no state ...

NOW-NYS President Marcia Pappas is at it again. The staunch Hillary Clinton supporter who caused a Web tsunami last January when she accused Sen. Ted Kennedy of "betraying" women by endorsing Barack Obama for president, has issued a press release entitled "What Woman Want From Obama" that proposes a list of "gifts" he must bring to the table to woo the female vote. They include: 1) Four or five pro-choice, women appointed to the US Supreme Court, plus a pro-choice litmus test for all lower-court appointments. 2) Replace DNC Chairman Howard Dean with a woman "who will not sit back quietly whil sexist attacks are levid against women candidates." 3) Ensure Superdelegates reflect gender equality. 4) Change the primary system (Pappas deems caucuses "not Democratic" and wants to allow secret ballots so women aren't "intimidated" and can "vote their conscience." 5) (Direct quotes here): "Many misogynists from other parties crossed over party lines to vote in the Democratic primaries. In fact Obama counted on this. He didn't want a re-vote in Florida or Michigan because the Republicans had already voted." "If we ever get another woman candidate who can make a serious bid for the presidency, misogynists from other parties should not determine the Democratic candidate. Women make up two thirds of the Democratic party; and our effect should not be diluted by the primary/caucus process." "When there is work to be done, when there are close v ...

Some former top Hillary Clinton fundraisers have received attention in recent days for thus far declining to help bundle donations for Barack Obama. But none of those figures was actively working against Obama's candidacy. Ricki Lieberman is another matter. Also a former Clinton "Hillraiser" (meaning she raised more than $100,000 for the campaign), Lieberman is keeping her own private hope alive with a daily email blast to supporters, entitled "Electability Watch," which features a cascade of negative articles and other items about Obama as a means to argue that Superdelegates should change their minds in Denver and crown Clinton the nominee instead. A tipster who described them as "disgusting" sent a batch of recent "Electability Watch" emails to the Huffington Post. Their authenticity was confirmed in a phone conversation with Ms. Lieberman, who said her only desire is to "see a Democratic president in the White House" next year. Any Democrat, perhaps, except Barack Obama -- or "BO aka Bush 3," as Lieberman repeatedly refers to him. The emails sometimes go out of their way to parrot some of the most hardcore attacks on Obama, including comments comparing Obama's planned nomination speech to Nazi-era presentations in Germany. In one email, she quotes messages from apparent Holocaust survivors: I have heard from many Survivors and their children about the symbolism and implications of use of rules to undermine our core Democratic ...

With the deal on Michigan and Florida in place, the new "magic number" for the Democratic presidential nomination is 2,118. NBC News reports Sen. Barack Obama needs just 45.5 delegates while Sen. Hillary Clinton needs 203 to win the nomination. There are 237.5 total delegates remaining in addition to the 201.5 still undeclared Superdelegates. That means Obama needs 19% of all remaining delegates while Clinton needs 85%. ...

As Barack Obama turns to concentrate on his general election challenge, his rival Hillary Rodham Clinton is mounting a last ditch campaign to stay relevant in what is left of the Democratic presidential contest. The former first lady enters this week with an insurgent strategy not only to win over undecided Superdelegates but to peel away Obama's support from those party leaders and elected officials who already have committed to back him for the nomination. "One thing about Superdelegates is that they can change their minds," she told reporters aboard her campaign plane Sunday night. ...
