THE NEW president of the University of the District of Columbia is, by all accounts, a respected educator. Allen Sessoms, the Ivy League-educated outgoing president of Delaware State University, has grand plans to remake the long-troubled UDC. The problem is that there is no consensus among D.C. political, business and education leaders on UDC's role. That will make curing its ills -- already a formidable challenge -- all the more difficult. ...

Certain plastics and glasses have a property known as photoelasticity - they restrict the speed of light differently as the materials are stretched or compressed. Noureddine Melikechi and Aristides Olaizola at Delaware State University's Applied Optics Center in Dover exploit the effect using an optical fibre with a photoelastic core. They bounce a laser beam back and forth along a fibre to produce a distinctive diffraction pattern and then bombard the fibre with sound. That causes the photoelastic part to stretch and compress, altering the way light travels through the fibre and changing the pattern. In effect the fibre behaves like a microphone, transforming sounds it receives into light signals. The team says that the fibre could be used as a low-cost sonar device by laying it across the seafloor and listening out for reflected sound pulses. Read the full fibre-optic sonar patent application. Justin Mullins, New Scientist consultant ...

Simple overspending has driven most personal bankruptcies in recent years, a change from previous decades when illness and unemployment were major factors, concludes a new study from the University of California, Davis, Graduate School of Management. "The reasons people file for personal bankruptcy indeed have shifted during the past couple of decades," says Ning Zhu, the study's author and an associate professor of management at UC Davis. "Although our research supports the notion that adverse life events, like losing one's health or job, contribute to personal bankruptcy filings, excessive consumption contributes more to the recent increase in personal bankruptcy filing." According to the American Bankruptcy Institute, 2,039,214 personal bankruptcies were filed in 2005, up nearly five-fold from the 412,510 bankruptcies filed in 1985. Indeed, personal bankruptcies jumped from 0.3 percent to 1.8 percent of all U.S. households during the same period. The UC Davis study looked at all personal bankruptcy filings in Delaware in 2003, because the State was among the first to make its bankruptcy filings available through the Public Access to Court Electronic Record system and its demographics closely resemble those nationwide. The year 2003 was chosen because it allowed the study to follow cases to their conclusion, and permitted observation of filing patterns before 2005. (Filings may have been accelerated in the months leading up to ...

Here in Connecticut, we just witnessed perhaps the No. 1 sports burnout case in recent history. Elena Della Donne had it all: beauty, brains, basketball skills beyond belief, and unfortunately, got burnout. Della Donne came the UConn basketball program full of promise and potential, but missing a key ingredient — a passion to play. The most highly-recruited high school basketball player in the country spent just two days on the Storrs campus last June before heading home to Delaware with her basketball future up in the air. Della Donne is currently enrolled at the University of Delaware, playing of all things, volleyball — a sport which she played just her senior year in high school. She claims it was one of the happiest times of her teenage life. Della Donne received her first unofficial scholarship offer when she was in seventh grade. By the end of her sophomore year, every college in the country wanted her. She was a national figure, but, according to her, she was also  “burned out from basketball.” Who wouldn’t be? She was the largest sports figure in the second-smallest State in the country. Her life was consumed with basketball. In addition to her normal high school season, she traveled all over the country. When she wasn’t on the road or at a gym, she was home working out with a personal coach on her backyard court. Her statistics, records and championships speak for themselves. And now, perhaps for the first time in her ath ...
