Trees are vital to life on Earth. They trap carbon and other particles produced by pollution. They provide habitat for animals and other plants, affect rainfall, prevent erosion, and help regulate the Earth's temperature. But we're losing trees at an alarming rate around the globe. According to the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization , the 33 million acres of forestland that are lost annually worldwide are responsible for 20% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. Trees are cut and burned for a number of reasons. Forests are logged to supply timber for wood and paper products, and to clear land for crops, cattle, and housing. Other causes of Deforestation include mining and oil exploitation, urbanization, acid rain and wildfires. Worldwide, Deforestation is a big problem, particularly in tropical regions. So what can YOU do about Deforestation? Actually, quite a bit. Here are a few ideas: Plant a tree : The most obvious way to combat Deforestation is to plant a tree. And its a great way to show get your kids involved as well. My girls like to plant a tree every year on their birthdays to celebrate the day and the planet. Plant a tree (or several) in your yard, at your child's school, in a community park ... anywhere. Go paperless : Save a tree by cutting back on the paper you use each day. Keep in touch via email, read news and magazines online, send texts instead of notes, and give e-cards to save both paper and cash ...

The 100 individuals or companies most responsible for Amazon Deforestation since 2005 were listed Monday by Brazilian Environment Minister Carlos Minc , and Brazil's own land-reform agency took the top spot. The Institute for Colonization and Agrarian Reform was said to be culpable for the Deforestation of 850 square miles of Amazon rainforest in the last three years. Everyone on the list, most of whom are Brazilian farmers and ranchers, will face criminal charges, according to Minc. Satellite data show that Amazon Deforestation is up sharply after a few years of decline: At least 300 square miles was destroyed in August 2008, compared to about 90 square miles in August 2007. Rising food prices have incentivized soy farmers and cattle ranchers to clear forested land, and with elections coming up, officials say mayors in the Amazon region are going easy on illegal loggers in hopes of gaining votes. It all makes for an uphill battle for Minc's ambitious goal to end net Amazon Deforestation entirely by 2015. sources:  Associated Press , Reuters , Bloomberg ...

It is a steep bill. Our shrinking forest cost us up to $5 trillion a year - far more than the current banking crisis. Environmentalists hope the sobering calculation, made by a European Union-commissioned team, will focus political will on funding conservation. How to put a price tag on nature? That conundrum is at the heart of research by a team headed by Deutsche Bank economist Pavan Sukhdev. They have found a way of calculating a figure for environmental damage and loss of biodiversity in forests. And the price is high: At between $2 trillion and $5 trillion per year it dwarfs the cost of the current financial crisis which economists gauge at about $1.5 trillion. Entitled "The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity," the report was originally published in May but has returned to the spotlight at the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona this week. Conservationists gathered at the event have said it underscores the need to ramp up funding for environmental protection. And when making traditional economic calculations, it is all too easy to overlook natural reserves like food, fibers, fuel, clean water, healthy soil and protection from floods, said the report. "Though our well being is totally dependent upon these 'ecosystem services' they are predominantly public goods with no markets and no prices, so they often are not detected by our current economic compass." In order to pinpoint an accurate price, the researchers add ...

While your 401K smolders in ruins, take a gander at this BBC article and it might give you some perspective. Unfortunately, it's not immediately an optimistic perspective: We are actually losing more money through Deforestation than through the current financial meltdown . The reasoning behind this is clear when we start calculating the often overlooked value of Natural Capital - resources provided by our environment including minerals, water, air, sunlight, heat, plants, animals, and other organic matter. Looking at the costs of Deforestation and other forms of resource depletion from a purely economic perspective may seem perverse to many environmentalists, but it may be the only way that these issues are ever going to get real attention from government, big business, and society at large. The study cited by the BBC comes from a Deutsche bank economist who states: ... whereas Wall Street by various calculations has to date lost, within the financial sector, $1-$1.5 trillion, the reality is that at today's rate we are losing natural capital at least between $2-$5 trillion every year (emphasis mine) Bear in mind that's an annual cost... and it's just about forests. Burning or bulldozing complex ecosystems such as tropical forests removes the benefits that those ecosystems provided for a short term gain - such as whatever price you can get for the lumber. But leaving an ecosystem more-or-less intact allows it to continue to provid ...

The world’s economy is suffering more from the loss of forests than from the current crisis on Wall Street , according to a new EU-commissioned study. The study says that the cost of Deforestation annually is between $2 and $5 trillion dollars. These numbers were arrived at after researchers put value on, and then added together, the many ways in which forests “work” for us, including absorbing CO2 from the air, and providing potable water. The idea behind the study is that as forests disappear, the natural world no longer provides services which it used to provide for free. So, the human economic system must step in and find a way to provide these same services, for example through building reservoirs or building infrastructure to catch carbon dioxide . “Whereas Wall Street by various calculations has to date lost, within the financial sector, $1-$1.5 trillion, the reality is that at today’s rate we are losing natural capital at least between $2-$5 trillion every year,” Pavan Sukhdev , who led the study, told the BBC. The review is called The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (Teeb) , and was initiated by Germany, although the European Commission provided the funding. Read more of this story » ...
