The Defense Department says it receives few complaints from military personnel who believe they've faced religious discrimination, contrary to allegations in a new federal lawsuit. Spokeswoman Eileen Lainez said Friday that the department has received fewer than 50 complaints in the past three years. The armed forces have more than 2.2 million active-duty and Reserve personnel. "The department respects (and supports by its policy) the rights of others to their own religious beliefs, including the right to hold no beliefs," Lainez said in a statement. "There are systems in place to provide a means to address and resolve any perceived unfair treatment." On Thursday, an atheist soldier at Fort Riley and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation sued Defense Secretary Robert Gates in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., alleging violations of the soldier's religious freedoms. Lainez said the department does not comment on pending lawsuits, but she quoted its policy on religious freedom: "The Department of Defense places a high value on the rights of members of the Armed Forces to observe the tenets of their respective religions." ... As part of a three-hour media day today, a Yahoo executive offered an interesting Defense of the company's pending search deal with Google. That deal, which was supposed to start in a few weeks, has come under increasing fire by people concerned that it will cement Google's already huge lead in search advertising. Now, Justice is apparently looking whether there's a case to quash the deal. Hilary Schneider, executive vice president of Yahoo U.S., positioned the deal with Google as an extension of Yahoo's partnerships by which other publishers such as hundreds of U.S. newspapers can sell ads on Yahoo properties. Her example: Search for "red roses in Birmingham Alabama" and you get no ads on Yahoo search results page. Google's search results page has 11 advertisers. So by hooking up with Google, Yahoo is giving those advertisers a chance to reach Yahoo users as well as Google users and potentially get more customers. In Yahoo's view, says Schneider, "We are able to essentially create more access and better ROI for the advertisers." Many advertisers don't think that tradeoff is worthwhile because they believe they'll pay more for the same results. Yahoo's essentially saying that advertisers will be getting better results for their money, whatever they pay. I don't envy the Justice Dept. trying to sort all this out. Update: During questions after her presentation, Schneider said Yahoo is confident the company can get Justice "comfortable" ... Source: downloads.zdnet.com --- 7 days ago

After Sept. 11, 2001, many publications and opinion journalists chose deference to the U.S. executive branch over getting too worked up about the very civil liberties and openness that made America so powerful in the first place. Not reason . In the first issue after the attacks, the magazine asked " Will civil liberties be a casualty in the War on Terrorism? ", warned presciently over the attempts by some to launch a new Cold War , and began a seven - year run of responsibly questioning executive power-mongering in the struggle against Islamic extremism . This was no new approach for reason . For 40 years now, from Lyndon Baines Johnson to Richard Milhous Nixon to George Walker Bush, the magazine of free minds and free markets has been equally free with skepticism whenever the White House argued that with great power comes great liberty. For instance, Reason Enterprises co-founder Manuel Klausner, along with Henry Hohenstein, published an interview with Pentagon Papers leaker Daniel Ellsberg as far back as June 1973, conducted when the former Defense Dept. analyst was still facing trial, and a potential life sentence, for espionage. (A trial at which a freshly returned ex-POW named John Sidney McCain had agreed to testify for the prosecution.)
