interrupting yr broadcast: the ditty bops Genuine independence in the music industry is a commodity in short supply. Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt has had consistent praise for his team's work ethic and practice performance over the past 10 days or so. That wasn't the case Wednesday, when the Rebels went through a "sloppy" workout inside the indoor practice facility. The practice included a scary moment for one of the Rebels' starting Defenders, a shake-up at linebacker and a revision on the Rebels' offensive line. Go inside for more ... A picture paints a thousand words. To know this is true only requires a single phrase: Abu Ghraib . The images released to the public shocked the world, and provided irrefutable evidence of the unconscionable interrogation tactics employed by U.S military personnel. Everyday, grassroots activists around the world are documenting pressing human rights abuses not unsimilar to the abuse in Abu Ghraib. Even in the face of unsurmountable oppression and censorship, human rights Defenders press on to help create the change they want to see. WITNESS is building a community of support for these activists on the Hub. As they work on the frontlines of today's most pressing human rights abuses, the Hub is where their voices can be heard and issues can be linked to unearth global trends in the struggle for human rights. The U.S. women's soccer team just beat Brazil, 1-0 in overtime, to win the gold in Beijing. The game was intense, especially from halftime on. Both teams were tired, had chances, missed opportunities, and benefited from goalies who made good saves. The game could have gone either way, and the most talented player on the field was Brazil's Marta. But Carli Lloyd booted in the winner, and the American Defenders held off a fierce attack that didn't quit until the final whistle blew. An exciting game and a great, grinding win for the United States. ... Source: goodcomics.comicbookresources.com --- 5 hours ago

What a difference a year makes. Carli Lloyd's 96th-minute goal and a determined defensive effort gave the United States a 1-0 victory over Brazil in the Olympic gold-medal match today in Beijing. One year after losing to Brazil in the semifinals of the 2007 World Cup, the U.S. team played cohesively and with energy in holding off a talented Brazilian side featuring Marta, Cristiane and Daniela. Lloyd scored on a blistering left-footed shot from 23 yards after forward Amy Rodriguez held the ball and laid it back to the U.S. midfielder. Hope Solo, who was benched in the World Cup last season and did not play against Brazil, was on the field for all 120 minutes and played a solid game while earning the shutout. Brazil had several near misses in the second overtime period, but the U.S. held on to win its third Olympic gold in four tries. The Americans also defeated Brazil in the 2004 Olympic gold-medal match in Athens. Central Defenders Kate Markgraf of Whitefish Bay and Christie Rampone helped contain Marta, the most dangerous striker in the women's game. Solo made a one-arm save on a shot by Marta in the 71st minute and tipped away several dangerous chances in the 30-minute overtime. ... Source: www.komotv.com --- 14 hours ago

As the Duke men's lacrosse team enjoyed a fantastic 2008 season with an 18-2 record and an appearance in the national semifinals, local product Jason Orlando was along for the ride. Orlando, former high school Under-Armour All-American and member of the Lincoln-Sudbury class of 2007, was one of 13 defenseman on the Blue Devils roster, four of them freshmen. He appeared in six games in the spring. ``It was a really good first year, a lot of time put in but definitely enjoyable,'' said Orlando, a defender who also saw time as a long-stick midfielder. ``It was a good experience for the first year.'' With all the competition at his position, seeing the field was difficult from the start of fall ball. Orlando said his most memorable appearance came during a 21-10 win over Ohio State during the NCAA Division 1 quarterfinals. ``All of a sudden I heard coach call me name, and that was really cool,'' said Orlando, who played long-pole midfield against the Buckeyes, but seemed pretty confident he'd be more of a close defender in the future. ``I was running in and out of the field as a long stick and it was really cool to play in a big game with a lot of people there.'' Regarding future playing time, Orlando took a hopeful view in regards for the upcoming season and beyond, noting that several Defenders return for the Blue Devils. ``I think its just going to take some time to keep learning the system and to put in the work before I get more of a ...
