The remake is nothing new; it has been with us for a long time. Sometimes, there are some truly incredible remakes out that give us a new perspective on a classic film. Oh yes, I do consider David Cronenberg’s The Fly , John Carpenter’s The Thing and Martin Scorsese’s The Departed to be worthy and equal of their predecessors on many levels, but I never discount the originals. I do not worship the new and discard the old. As much as I like Peter Jackson’s King Kong , it will never be in the same league as the Merian C. Cooper’s 1933 masterpiece. If it were not for the original King Kong , I would most likely be an investment banker. King Kong is the original road to this obsession. Remakes have been with us for a long time. They provide a quick buck for the studios, but for the most part they are a waste of film stock and shelf space. Usually the original version is sharper and more focused. The newer version’s edge has been dulled considerably; it lacks the bite and the shock that made the original something to write home about in the ...
