Joseph Butler, 18th Century English Theologian Being from Washington state, I called the only Senator that I thought would have enough spine to lead a successful opposition to the Senate version of the $700billion bailout bill.  I actually got a hold of a live person and pleaded that Senator Shelby mount a filibuster attempt to stall the Vote.  The aide was polite, courteous, and expressed agreement, but acknowledged that at that time, Senator Shelby was planning no such filibuster. My hopes were dashed, and the words of Joseph Butler came to mind..."IT IS WHAT IT IS, AND NOT ANOTHER THING."  Slightly mis-applied, but nevertheless appropriate.  This $700 billion dollar Death Knell is a done deal. Death Knell:  a ringing of a bell, toll anouncing Death--Death of liberty, Death of our free-market system, Death of democracy. It is what it is ... a Death Knell, a temporary fix which will lead to a greater disaster, a massive does of opium to treat the symptoms of a systemic cancer. It is not another thing ...a cure, a fix, or a remedy by any other name. Black arm bands are appropriate.  As a 41 year old U.S. Citizen, it is the saddest I have ever been for my country. ...
