A loud argument between two Deaf women led to one of them being arrested Friday for assaulting a cop, police said. Police arrested Theresa Maley, 39, of Holliston, at 10:15 p.m. following an argument at 201 Irving St., Deputy Police Chief Craig Davis said. Police went to the building around 10 p.m. Inside, they found Maley, of 220 Mills St., yelling at another Woman, whom police did not identify, inside one of the apartments. Both women are Deaf, Davis said. "She (Maley) was getting more and more aggressive when the officers were present," the deputy said. Officer Felipe Martinez stood between the two women. Maley shoved Martinez while trying to attack the other Woman, police said. Maley faces charges of assault and battery on a police officer and disorderly conduct. An English speaker kicks a ball, but a Turkish speaker ball kicks--at least if you're following the grammatical order of his or her language. However, a new study shows that without words, speakers of these two language order things in the same way. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied 40 speakers: 10 each of English, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and Turkish. These individuals watched videos of simple action sequences, then described them first in words, then in actions. When they described the actions in words, speakers put the subject, verb and object of the sequences in the order dictated by their respective languages. For example, English speakers followed the order subject, verb, object ("Woman turns knob"), while Turkish speakers followed the order subject, object, verb. For the next step, participants acted out the scene using physical gestures. Researchers expected the motions to follow the same order as a participant's verbal description. However, all subjects tended to physically illustrate the events in a subject-object-verb order, even if their verbal description followed a subject-verb-object order. A second experiment found similar results when participants illustrated the actions using transparencies. These findings suggest that we comprehend events via a universal "grammar" independent of language. .......I promised not to be a whiner, post cat stuff, complain about the weather, blah, blah, blah.....but I am in a mood and if I can't bitch (yes, that is what I do) on my own personal online blog/ journal then why bother having one. I am absolutely sure all of you have thought "What the hell is wrong with that Woman? All she does is whine." Nothing new......but....I'll get to the but at the end. I was sitting at the kitchen table last night reading blogs. I pretty much commented on all of my favorites unless blogger interfered. I have the blogs I read regularly bookmarked alphabetically so ones that start with "The" are at the very end. So, I got to Mom/Sue's blog The Best is Yet to Be and sure enough as is her custom, she was happy, listing thoughts about the last week and including her blessings. Every time I read her blog I feel better. Her heart is so full of giving and love, she has a wonderful extended family, travels, found some long lost relatives via her blog posts....and well, she is just a nice Woman. I started crying. I pretty much didn't stop. If Steve had been home he would have been on the phone to our doc. Then this morning there was a piece on Good Morning America about a young Woman diagnosed with neurofibroblastoma. For some time, Alaina spent her days at the Jingzhou Social Welfare Institute in Hubei Province because the local public school did not have an education program that fit her needs. When Love Without Boundaries opened a Believe In Me School in Alaina’s orphanage, her potential as a student was like a giant blinking neon sign: THIS YOUNG Woman IS INTELLIGENT AND TALENTED! Through the generosity of two monthly sponsors, Alaina is able to attend a school for the Deaf in Jingzhou. She has simply blossomed as a student and an artist. Every time our school manager reports on Alaina’s progress, he tells us how wonderful she is doing in school. It seems Alaina’s greatest challenge is that she is shy about raising her hand and letting her teachers know what she knows. However, her intelligence is clear on her test papers and academic reports. What is amazing to see from Alaina is her prolific artwork. This is a young Woman who finds happiness in creating! Her delightful, sensitive personality comes through in the subjects that she captures with pencils, crayons, and markers.
