Once upon a time, the prospect of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino on screen together, would've provoked a wildly different reaction than the one I have whenever I see posters for their new cop flick, "Righteous Kill." Twenty years ago I'd have raced you to the theater. Now? All I see is two bored, scowling men paired up for a movie that sounds as though it's about a surfing competition ("Dude, that was a righteous kill!"), and all I think is, "Oh, no." This isn't the first time De Niro and Pacino have stooped to self-parody in paycheck roles. It's just the first time they've done it as a team. Too harsh? The director is Jon Avnet, the man behind "Fried Green Tomatoes," as well as Pacino's latest, "88 Minutes," which was notable only for being 17 awful minutes longer than the title promised. ... GK Films announced yesterday that Robert De Niro has joined the cast alongside of Mel Gibson in the upcoming drama Edge of Darkness. The film, directed by Martin Campbell of Goldeneye, Vertical Limit, and Casino Royale, is an adaptation of a BBC miniseries, also directed by Campbell, that aired in 1985. The screenplay was written by Oscar winning writer William Monahan of The Departed and Kingdom of Heaven previously. This is also the first film that Gibson has a lead role in since 2002 when he starred in Signs and We Were Soldiers. With the addition of another fine actor, Edge of Darkness is starting to look like a project that could end up being the talk of the town when it finally hits theaters. It looks like Mel Gibson has done exactly that with his upcoming Edge of Darkness , because according to Variety , Robert De Niro is in talks to join the cast. Edge is a big-screen remake of the 1985 BBC miniseries, and it centers on Thomas Craven, a Boston detective, whose 24-year-old daughter is murdered on the front steps of their home. Assuming he was the target, Craven begins investigating the murder, only to discover a startling conspiracy that reaches into high levels of government. Robert De Niro will play an operative sent to clean up the evidence, which probably means he'll engage in fisticuffs with Gibson at some point. The movie is set to begin filming this month in Massachusetts, and has a SAG waiver to continue if a strike occurs. As I've stated before , I'm really looking forward to seeing Gibson acting again, and I love the idea of him pairing up with De Niro. It's a casting combination that I'm surprised hasn't happened before. I just hope the film, and its performances, can be judged on its own merit and not condemned because of Gibson's past behavior.
