Regis Philbin has lost the "Best Regis" award yet again. And this time, it's personal: The winner is Philbin's infant grandson, William Xavier. The 7-month-old bested Philbin for the honor at the announcement Thursday of the sixth annual Relly Awards - Philbin's version of the Emmys. "He is cute, but does he REALLY deserve the Relly?" spouted the 77-year-old talk-show host, a loser for the fifth straight year, on "Live With Regis and Kelly." The "Best Regis" category was introduced in 2004. William Xavier - affectionately called "Willy X" by Philbin's co-host Kelly Ripa - is the son of the Philbin's daughter J.J. and her husband Michael Schur, a writer for the NBC comedy "The Office." The baby recently made his TV debut on "Live" when Philbin proudly showed him off to the audience. Producers used a split screen to highlight the similarities between Philbin and his tiny doppelganger. In a video clip on Thursday's show, little William - his inner voice narrated in a deadpan adult voice - accepted his award on behalf of Philbin, his parents, "other babies and Regis Philbin impersonators everywhere." "I was very surprised at William Xavier! I don't remember him being on the show and talking that much," Philbin, who hadn't yet spoken to his family, said after the show. Peter Price’s tumultuous and aggressive reign as president and CEO of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will come to an early conclusion at the end of the year. He will continue to advise and to head up the NATAS Foundation, which raises money for scholarships, education and other initiatives, he said in an interview with TelevisionWeek . He’ll perform the NATAS Foundation duties without compensation—“church work,” as he called it. The trustees of NATAS, which runs TV awards programs including the News & Documentary Emmys and the Daytime Creative Arts and Entertainment Emmys, are recommending that Chief Financial Officer Carolyn Grippi become executive VP and function as chief operating officer as well as CFO effective Jan. 1. Mr. Price, 68, said he told the NATAS trustees last spring that he had made the decision to leave before his contract expires in September 2009 to focus on a number of ventures in which he is an investor, including a healthcare-related business that is aiming to go public. “I’m going to get very busy around the first of the year,” he said. He had hit the ground running at NATAS after he was chosen in 2002 to lead the group and mandated to shake up the then-fustier cousin of the Los Angeles-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. NBC4 walked away with the most Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards at a ceremony held at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre on Sept. 6. The station, which received eight awards, won for Investigative Reporting and Outstanding Hard News Reporting. It was followed by KCET with 6 awards and CBS2/KCAL9 with 5 awards. ABC7 and KTLA5 received 3 awards each. FOX11 won in 4 categories, including Live Coverage of an Unscheduled News Event for the May Day March/Melee. The Regularly Scheduled Daily News categories went to CBS2, KCAL9 and KTLA5. CBS2’s News at Eleven PM won the 35 Minute Format category, while KCAL9 picked up the Over 35 Minute Format award. Last month, " Deal or No Deal " host Howie Mandel had many wondering what he was doing at the Emmy Awards — and not just for the bad jokes he was telling. As the emcee of a game show, this felt like an odd fit : Mandel was there competing as best host of a reality TV show. "Deal or No Deal" is not really a reality show, of course, but there aren't enough game shows in prime time to warrant their own categories for host and program, so he ended up being shoehorned into this one. However, there is no such issue at the Daytime Emmy Awards , where game shows and their hosts have competed since those kudos began in 1974. And with the successful launch of the syndicated daily version of " Deal or No Deal ," Howie Mandel could find himself in the running there next spring. Variety reports that the Daytime edition is already a solid hit with the audience, building steadily since its September launch. Among those he might face off against is Drew Carey for his sophomore season on " The Price is Right ." Carey had big shoes to fill last year, taking over the hosting gig from TV legend Bob Barker , who launched the CBS Daytime staple in 1972. Although the show picked up an Emmy nod (losing to "Cash Cab"), Carey was snubbed ( Alex Trebek won his fourth Emmy for "Jeopardy!").
