Throw Me the Statue toss us some more literate, low-key guitar-pop with "Ship", from the Seattle band's tour-only Purple Face EP. As the Scott Reitherman-led group sets sail with the likes of Bodies of Water and David Vandervelde (dates are here ), this song has more of the understated yet inventive instrumentation that former Pedro the Lion member Casey Foubert helped bring to debut album Moonbeams . Programmed beats set a martial rhythm, and drawn-out keyboard chords evoke melancholy overhead. "We too can hear, it gives us cause to wonder of loss," Reitherman murmurs, before adding, "It's all right," amid some nimble guitars and horns on the chorus. Gerade hat mich eine meiner Event-Informationsseiten in Sachen New Yorker Freizeitunterhaltung, flavorpill.com , informiert, dass ich zwei Tickets für das Calexico-Konzert heute Abend gewonnen habe. ( Hier kannste reinhören, wenn du willst. ) Ich habe die Band an einem ereignisreichen Konzertmarathon im Sommer 2000 in Berlin das erste Mal gesehen. Es war der Abend und die Nacht, an dem ich amerikanischen Indierock kennengelernt habe. Built to Spill , Flaming Lips , Yo La Tengo ein paar andere und eben Calexico -- kein schlechter Einstand. Also werde ich heute zu zwei Konzerten gehen. Das Konzert von David Vandervelde, zu dem ich schon eingeladen war und vorher Calexico. (Effiziente Abendgestaltung nennt man das.) Und ich gehe mir jetzt mal ein Lotterieticket kaufen. Hier ist ja offensichtlich eine Glückssträhne im Anzug. ...

A teen metalcore guitarist turned studio engineer turned glammy multi-instrumentalist (2007's promising The Moonstation House Band ), David Vandervelde has already had a whirlwind career by his late 20s. Rather than play every instrument himself on his second album, Vandervelde leads a full band, the Lickedy Splitz, even cowriting a song with buddy and ex-Wilco member Jay Bennett (the overly lax countryish rocker "California Breezes"). But sliding away from his Marc Bolan fixation, Vandervelde sounds more like a subpar Lindsey Buckingham (there's even a cocaine lyric on "Someone Like You"), offering shlocky '70s AM pop rock on drifting, overlong tunes like "Need for Now." ...
