David Jaffe , who politely refers to me as “Mr. Totilo,” has posted his commentary about my interview with EA CEO John Riccitiello regarding crediting individual game developers . Read the whole thing , though if you want to know just how strongly he feels, this excerpt will do: (Curses cleaned in the following excerpt to meet MTV’s language standards, Mr. Jaffe): Alot of the net posters commenting on this story are assuming game devs who want this treatment are ego maniacs. They then go on to say that movie stars and movie directors are ok to ask for it because that’s just how it is, but game makers are a–holes if they as for such treatment. To these folks I say: go f— yourself. The movie folks negotiated for those credits and fought tooth and nail for them. They were not just given them by the movie gods or the kind folks who run the movie studios or the movie going public. So don’t accuse us of being arrogant just because some of us would like to be treated with as much re$pect (be it money or credit, and preferably both) as we can get away with. Plus, granted Miyamoto and Wright are not as big of names as Spielberg. BUT THAT IS BECAUSE MIYAMOTO AND WRIGHT DON’T HAVE NAMES ABOVE PRODUCTS and they don’t have ability to negotiate for the sort of press treatment and PR perks that movie folks get (which, in turn, turns them into brand names). The only way they will become mainstream is if they MAKE THEMSELVES mainstream. It is not ...

EatSleepPlay; Jaffe's development company are working on an unannounced PS3 exclusive. Jaffe hinted on his blog last week, that his game will be shown at a "Sony Dog and Pony" this week. Along with the blog entry came a cryptic Photoshop drawing. Sony Dog and Pony sounds like an internal showing, and we can all get excited for a Twisted Metal PS3, but will we be disappointed? We really don't know yet, a safe bet would be to wait for Leipzig to see if it brings any news. What do you think? Read on to see exactly what he said... ...

Nobody really took kindly to Nintendo’s condescending remark that only “ geeks and otaku ” cared about the Wii’s serious lack of storage space (Not the least of which was David Jaffe ). While Laurent Fischer, the one who originally made the comment, later apologized, there was still no word that Nintendo was actually addressing the complaints about storage capacity. During E3 last week, MTV Multiplayer got to chat with Nintendo of America prez Reggie Fils-Aime and one of the topics that came up was what spawned the “geeks and otaku” comment. Reggie said explained that they’re looking at the situation and while they don’t have anything to announce currently, “certainly it’s an issue we are aware of and we’re working to find a solution and we will.” In other words, he said exactly what you’d expect. Multiplayer also asked if Nintendo had been hearing from more than the core gamer audience about the lack of storage space, which prompted him to explain, “As we continue to have things, as you point out, like Mario Kart that has its own channel when you’re playing from an Internet perspective, we’re just making this challenge tougher and tougher. So in our view this is becoming much more of a mainstream problem, which is why we have a sense of urgency to solve it.” Ah, well the mainstream wants it, so there must be a solution on the way! Hopefully it won’t be too pricey, whatever it is. ---Related Articles at Gaming Today:Nintendo: Onl ...

Contrary to popular belief, Nintendo is taking the storage limitations of the Wii very seriously, says Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. "We have said publicly that we're looking hard at the storage situation, that we're working on a range of solutions," Fils-Aime told MTV Multiplayer. "We have nothing to announce now. But certainly it's an issue we are aware of and we're working to find a solution and we will." Fils-Aime also responded to the infamous comments made by Nintendo of Europe marketing director Laurent Fischer, who made out the problem to be of importance only to "geeks and otaku." Not so, he says: It is in fact a "mainstream problem" for the company and there is "a sense of urgency to solve it." The Wii's internal storage for downloaded games and content is currently a paltry 512 MB, with no means of expansion. Data can be copied to an SD card, but not accessed directly. We won’t be attending Games Convention in Germany next week, but we’ll still be here delivering you the goods in the ol’ US of A. Here’s a look at what this week brought: * Stephen Totilo managed to discover a man actually named Wii * Plus, did you think Nintendo invented the word Wii? You’d be wrong * Blizzard told us “Diablo III” won’t be the end of the “Diablo” franchise * I continued my playthrough of the “Mega Man” series * Are you hungry for video game food? It appears we've run into more details for the upcoming God of War movie under Universal Studios. The rather unlikely source of this info is a recent MGM press wire announcing the studio's plans to release a new RoboCop movie this 2010, to be written by David Self. While that's already pretty big news in itself (though not gaming-related), here was the segment of MGM's PR that caught our attention: David Self's credits include 13 Days and Road To Perdition. He wrote God of War for Universal, to which Brett Ratner is attached to direct , and was a writer on Universal's Wolfman currently in production. He is represented by UTA and attorney Karl Austen. Well, it looks like we now know which " huge-name director " Jaffe had in mind for Kratos ' debut on the silver screen. To his credit, Bretner is best know for directing films like Red Dragon, Rush Hour 2 and 3, and X-Man: The Last Stand. That's all the details we have for the moment, though we'll get back to you if we run into any related updates. ...

David Jaffe has drawn more than his share of fans and detractors among the video gaming community. He has finally come out and discussed one of his cancelled Playstation Portable Games, Heartland . According to Jaffe, Heartland was supposed to be a first person shooter which made a political point . He noted that while the concept was good, it just didn't seem to fit into the style and type of games the developers from Incognito were into: They certainly were more than capable of executing it. But I think it really didn't play to what they were passionate about, in terms of a lot of them don't go home and play story games. A lot of them aren't all that interested in the merging of narrative and interactivity. They're more straight-up gamers. They like mechanics. They like multiplayer. They like the arcade stuff. Heartland was supposed to be developed for two years total, however, it only lasted for eight months. Aside from the aforementioned problem, he cited that the team was slowly being whittled down to work on Warhawk : "By the end, we were running on fumes anyway, the ambition is just too great for the resources that we have." That said, Jaffe isn't bitter about the ordeal. He's happy to finally get the idea of making a statement out of his system and can now focus on working on games that will simply entertain people: I just want to make people happy and entertain people. I don't need to push the medium f ...

Photo-illustration: Vulture (books); Courtesy of AMC In bed with his wife, Mad Men 's Don Draper reads The Best of Everything — Rona Jaffe's 1958 chick-lit classic about women trying to make it in the office world. Before getting into bed with his Jewish client, he reads Leon Uris's Exodus . And before he gets into bed with anyone in the second season — literary spoiler alert! — Draper is seen reading Frank O'Hara's Meditations in an Emergency . Clearly, Mad Men isn't just nostalgic for the days when men tossed back Scotch — but for the days when they tossed back Scotch and read books too! What else might be on the Draper's bookshelf? And what books about guys just like Don Draper might Matthew Weiner and the Mad Men writers have dug into for period detail? The Hidden Persuaders (1957) Vance Packard's hysterical exposé was the Fast Food Nation of its era — an alarmist romp through the "strange and exotic" world of Don Draper's cronies, from subliminal advertising to the feminization of men's clothes. Sounds like Don: "The women are buying a promise," says one of the book's ad execs. "The cosmetic manufacturers are not selling lanolin, they are selling hope." The Lonely Crowd (1950) David Riesman's classic pop-sociology bestseller argued that Americans' pioneer spirit was being corrupted by postwar softness, while nuclear families crumbled. The result: Men were becoming "other-directed" — driven by communal peer pressure (like adv ...

Filed under: Business The issue of putting game designers' names on boxes is one that we've been exploring since we read this dazzling piece way back in 2005. But David Jaffe, playing off of a recent MTV post , is in a unique position to comment, as one of the few designers who have somehow been able to set themselves apart as a brand. His latest blog entry explores why more game designers don't make it on the box, and why it's in publishers' best interests to keep it that way. Brace yourself, because this next quote is probably the truest, most succinct encapsulation of the current state of the game industry that you'll ever hear: "Even the guys who make CALL OF DUTY, HALO, and GTA are not in a perfect position, as amazingly genius as they are," Jaffe writes. "Because All of those games- even if given to C+ level developers- can still make crazy cash for at least 2-4 more iterations before the public catches on and stops buying the series." This all goes to prove what we've expected all along: American McGee has to have blackmail pictures of somebody picking up a transvestite hooker, right? Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3 If you're not making sense of the mess that's leaked out of Jaffe's little red pen, don't worry, you're not alone. There's a reason why most developers choose to keep the uglier side of game design in house. But then, David Jaffe isn't most developers. If we squint hard enough, we can just barely see the outline of a Twisted Metal level (at least, that's the going theory) -- oh, and a Spider-Man head. Wow dude, if this Eat Sleep Play thing doesn't work out, you should totally try out for Marvel! (And yes, we actually dialed that 1-800 number...) Anyway, glad to hear Jaffe's getting his "core" computer back up to speed. We can't imagine what's it's been like to be stuck with Windows and Internet Explorer. Gross. The Nasher Museum of Art's upcoming exhibition "El Greco to Velázquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III" has inspired a celebration of the Golden Age of Spain throughout the Research Triangle region. Cultural institutions, restaurants and tourism officials are planning ways to complement the first comprehensive exhibition of art made for this Spanish court 400 years ago. They include a new symphony piece, a new ballet, musical performances and cooking classes, among other activities. The exhibition will be on view at the museum on the Duke University campus from Aug. 21 through Nov. 9. The North Carolina Symphony has commissioned composer Stephen Jaffe to write a piece based on the exhibition and the music of El Greco's time. Jaffe is the Mary and James H. Semans Professor of Music Composition at Duke and has fulfilled commissions from the National Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Fromm Foundation at Harvard University and Oregon Bach Festival. The symphony will perform Jaffe's work in concerts in Chapel Hill and Raleigh Oct. 2-4. "We're excited to be a part of this tapestry of events which weaves together so many parts of our artistic community," says North Carolina Symphony president and CEO David Chambless Worters. "Multi-faceted partnerships like this, under the Nasher Museum's leadership, show the world how integrated the arts are into North Carolina culture." Robert Weiss, artistic director of Carol ...
