David Gilliland, driver of the No. 38 Ford. Drive one. Ford Fusion, was collected in a practice accident while following Dale Earnhardt Jr. FOLLOWING DALE JR. ON A RESTRICTOR PLATE TRACK IS USUALLY A GOOD THING, BUT NOT AT THAT MOMENT. "We had our Drive one Ford Fusion driving really good. We made some changes because we were really unhappy with it in the first practice session, so we made some changes there and it was driving great. It had a lot of speed, so I think we learned a lot that ... ... Source: www.motorsport.com --- 17 days ago
David Gilliland, YATES RACING No. 38 Ford. Drive one. Ford Fusion David Gilliland on Kansas: "I've only been able to race at Kansas twice with the Cup series. Last year we were running really well but then we had that long rain delay and we got caught up in an accident, so I didn't have a great finish. Our performance lately has been up and we've had very fast cars when we unload off the truck each weekend. I'm looking forward to this weekend's race. We just need to stay out of trouble and secure the finishes our cars are capable of and I think ... ... Source: www.motorsport.com --- 3 days ago
Quoting Ford. Drive one. driver David Gilliland on Charlotte: "I really like racing at Charlotte because it's an opportunity for us to race at home during the season. Charlotte is a very fast track where we have room to pass and make moves, but it also is a race that you have to make sure you have a strong car to perform all 500 miles of the race. Saturday night's race is also challenging because as the sun goes down we have to make sure that we are able to adjust to the changing needs of our car. I'm looking ahead to this ... ... It seems like weeks of turmoil are when Dale Earnhardt Inc. does best in qualifying. Back in the summer when we all found out Mark Martin was heading to Hendrick Motorsports, DEI answered with great qualifying positions. This week DEI has had to deal with questions about Paul Menard leaving the team and what this leaves for DEI's future. Well, we're a little more than halfway through qualifying and all four DEI cars are in the top 10. The No. 01, No. 8 and No. 15 are all in the top five, followed closely by the No. 1. Regan Smith spoke to us shortly after his No. 01 qualified third (it's now fourth after Casey Mears qualified second) and said he still has a lot of confidence in the organization and in its ability to rebound from this. Kyle Busch, meanwhile is currently 24th out of 27 cars qualified and he was not happy when he got out of his car. He said the qualifying laps didn't go well and he's not expecting tomorrow to go much better. David Gilliland leads qualifying right now with a speed of 187.364 miles per hour. ... Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s had a bad day. First he had a problem with his motor, and had to replace it. That means Earnhardt will start at the back of the field on Sunday. Then, his tire blew and messed up his car during practice. The car was so badly damaged Earnhardt would've had to go to a backup car even if David Gilliland hadn't slammed into him. The car they wrecked was Earnhardt's Bud Shootout car (he won that race), but the good news is his backup is his Daytona 500 car, which ran pretty well back in February. Earnhardt is surprisingly upbeat after this rough day. And he thinks his team will be more mentally tough on Sunday because of the adversity they went through today. "It would be worse somewhere else," Earnhardt said. "The way these cars drive, it doesn’t matter how good. I was talking to David about his car and I felt sorry for him getting swept up in that and he said his backup car wasn’t that good. But I told him his car wouldn’t matter in a place like this. He might have more fun with it. I have a really good car but even if we weren’t sure about how good our car was that we’re bringing to the race, I’d still feel pretty confident. It’s a fun racetrack. It’s got a lot of mystique and history for me." ... Source: www.kentucky.com --- 8 days ago
Travis Kvapil won his first career pole in the Sprint Cup Series on Saturday, taking the top starting spot for the Amp Energy 500 at the Talladega Superspeedway. The No.28 Yates Racing Ford driver rounded the 2.66-mile oval in 51.109 seconds (187.364 m.p.h.). Kvapil's first pole came in his 100th start. "I'm just really proud of everybody at Yates Racing," Kvapil said. "This is a brand-new car. It rolled off the truck, and its first lap was yesterday and it was fast. Obviously, the Roush-Yates engines are phenomenal in plate-racing here." Yates drivers have won four poles at Talladega in the last five years there. Elliott Sadler grabbed the top starting spot for Yates in the fall race at Talladega in 2003 and '05. David Gilliland grabbed the pole for the fall event there two years ago. Kvapil becomes the third first-time pole winner in the series this season, joining Patrick Carpentier (New Hampshire) and Paul Menard (Daytona). ... Source: www.kentucky.com --- 8 days ago
TALLADEGA, Ala. - Friday has already been a long day for Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Talladega Superspeedway. After having an engine problem in the first Sprint Cup practice for the Amp Energy 500, forcing his team to switch motors, Earnhardt Jr. blew a right-rear tire early in the final practice and set off a multi-car wreck. Debris from the No. 88 Chevrolet flew away as the tire blew in Turn 4 as Earnhardt Jr. was leading David Gilliland and several other cars in the draft. Earnhardt Jr. spun and hit the wall, collecting Gilliland's No. 38 Ford. Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne had contact as they tried to avoid the incident, with Stewart sliding down the banking and into the grass below the apron. Their crews began working to repair the primary cars. Earnhardt Jr., Gilliland and David Reutimann, who got hit in the aftermath of the Earnhardt Jr. incident, all will go to back-up cars. ... Paul Menard's move from Dale Earnhardt Inc. to Yates Racing for 2009 is official. "This is a great opportunity and I'm glad to be joining the Yates Racing organization next season," Menard in making the announcement Tuesday. "I'm excited to be a part of their future." Yates Racing has worked out sponsorship for two cars, driven by Travis Kvapil and David Gilliland, on almost a week-by-week basis this year. Menard brings sponsorship from Menard's, the company owned by his father, John Menard, as well as several associate sponsorships. "It's a positive addition for us to get a guy like Paul," team owner Doug Yates said. "He's been through adversity in his first year in Cup and shown tremendous improvement in his second year. ...He already has a good relationship with our current drivers, so adding that third source of data should help our entire team rise up." DOVER, Del. - Ask Max Siegel one day about Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s prospects of keeping driver Paul Menard in 2009 and he's very confident. Ask him the next and his outlook is more grim. "We're just in the heat of competition right now for Paul," said Siegel, DEI's president of global operations. "As of right now, nothing has changed, but my gut feeling seems to change frequently." Speculation mounted Friday at Dover International Speedway that Menard had decided to move to the Yates Racing organization next season, but both Siegel and Yates team owner Doug Yates denied a deal had been completed. Both said, however, a decision was expected very soon. "I feel good about what we have tried to do for Paul and the progress he's made," Siegel said. "I would love to have him here at DEI. I think he's a good fit." Yates is working to expand the current two-car Sprint Cup operation, which fields Fords for Travis Kvapil and David Gilliland. ... Source: www.kentucky.com --- 11 days ago
Sprint Cup Series driver Paul Menard will leave Dale Earnhardt Inc. and join Yates Racing at the end of the year. Menard will finish the season in DEI's No.15 Chevrolet but will bring sponsorship from his family-owned chain of hardware stores to Yates. "This is a great opportunity, and I'm glad to be joining the Yates Racing organization next season." Menard said in a statement. "I think a lot of what Doug Yates and Max Jones are doing over there (are) building for continued success. I'm excited to be a part of their future and excited to work with Travis (Kvapil) and David (Gilliland)." Yates fields Fords for Gilliland and Kvapil but currently lacks full-time sponsorship for both teams. However, Yates is associated with Roush Fenway Racing, receiving technical and sponsorship support from them. Menard, in his second full season of Sprint Cup competition, is 28th in the point standings, with his best finish of the year coming in June at Michigan, when he finished 11th. ... A crash during Friday afternoon's final practice at the Talladega Superspeedway will force five teams to use their backup cars for Sunday's Amp Energy 500. Less than 10 minutes into the practice, championship "Chase" contender and five-time Talladega winner Dale Earnhardt, Jr. blew a right-rear tire, triggering a six-car pileup on the backstretch. Earnhardt, Jr. led a pack of cars when his tire exploded. The No.88 Chevrolet driver spun and smacked the wall, severely damaging the rear end of his car. David Gilliland was running right behind Earnhardt, Jr. when the incident occurred. Gilliland also sustained heavy damage to his No.38 Ford. "It was wild," Gilliland said. "Junior just blew a right rear tire. It just blew up." Kasey Kahne, David Reutimann, Clint Bowyer and Tony Stewart were also involved in the accident. "I just saw tires flying and then smoke," Kahne said. "I didn't know really where to go. I hit it a little bit, but it tore up the front of the car bad enough that we'll definitely need to go to our backup car." ... Source: www.motorsport.com --- 27 days ago
