Both directors get the word out on their latest films. TELLURIDE, Colo. -- Directors David Fincher and Danny Boyle came to the Telluride Film Festival with very different motivations for their fundamentally dissimilar films. But both will leave the festival having accomplished pretty much exactly what they needed to do. ...

So the trailer for David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button , starring Brad Pitt as a strange man who ages in reverse, had people giddy with excitement about the potential for a greatly magical drama from an often-brilliant director. Oscar-worthiness was assumed. Then some selected footage screened for critics apparently disappointed with their slow pace, tempering expectations for the final project. Now, it's been revealed that Paramount has been fighting with Fincher over the running time of the film. The strife is reportedly bitter enough that the planned Heavy Metal project was pulled from them and set up at Sony, to spite their attempt to strongarm him by refusing to greenlight Fincher's other projects. The cut of the film is currently rumored to be about two and a half hours, but more may yet be shorn before the actual release. Even the trailer makes it look like it'll be a long and slowly-paced film - it spans a man's entire lifetime. Maybe it should just be what it'll be. ...

Last week, I screened 20 minutes of clips of scenes from David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. In our first impression article, I expressed my concern and disappointment over the footage shown, partly because I felt some of the short scenes dragged. It was good but not great. Rumor has it that Paramount ordered David Fincher to trim down the forthcoming Curious Case of Benjamin Button . Well, he did, but not without payback: Fincher's next film, Heavy Metal , is going to Sony. The Playlist : A random video we found...says Paramount was ransoming Heavy Metal against the running-time of Button. "We developed it for Paramount in January... And it was time for them to make a decision [about going forward with the project] and they were at odds with Fincher over another project, 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,' [because] they wanted him to reduce the running time... and so they said, 'Until you step up to do what we want you to do with Benjamin, we're not going to greenlight any other of [your] movies.' And David said, 'Fine, fuck you, I'm going to set up [Heavy Metal] somewhere else,' so we jumped over to Sony and set it up there." Just last month, Philippe Dauman said Viacom was excited about the film, so perhaps he was pleased with Fincher's cuts. And now he's probably praying that Fincher's next film bombs. ¿Qué puede tener en común el director de Los Ríos Color Púrpura, Mathieu Kassovitz, y el mucho más conocido y respetado director de Zodiac, David Fincher? Whenever some film or filmmaker ends up in the news a lot, more related stories seem to work their way out of the woodwork. Today we've got another tidbit on a proposed upcoming David Fincher project. Although I know we're supposed to be entirely focused on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, this is about another one of his upcoming projects - an adaptation of the true crime graphic novel Torso. We seem to have missed the original announcement for this project, but the news today comes from Cleveland.com (via our friends at RopeofSilicon), the site for the city where the film takes place as well as where they might shoot. The article mentions that Matt Damon will play Cleveland's safety director Eliot Ness, who gets wrapped up in the killings, as well as details on Ohio's lack of tax breaks for filmmakers. Starting from the top, Torso is a graphic ... ...

At the L.A. Times' entertainment news blog, John Horn reports on the Telluride Film Festival, fretting over "the near complete absence of American movies in this Colorado mountain hamlet may underscore a more worrisome trend: that some of the highest-quality movies are being made far from American soil. Among the best-received Telluride titles are 'I've Loved You So Long,' a French drama about estranged sisters starring Kristin Scott Thomas; and 'Gomorrah,' an Italian crime story set in the world of toxic waste disposal and garment manufacturing." READ MORE Anne Thompson of Variety.com gives a smart report on awards buzz surrounding pix at the Telluride Film Festival. Meantime, she gives a tweak of the cheek to Jeff Wells of Hollywood-Elsewhere.com for reporting negative gossip about the 20-minute audience reax to "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" at Telluride Film Festival. She insists that it "played well in the Opera House with the folks who actually saw it . . . . No matter how the film turns out, the buzz on Brad Pitt — who was impressive in the Fincher clips of 'Seven' and 'Fight Club' — is getting louder. It could be his turn. "Among the relative unknown pics with Oscar hopes on their sleeves are 'Flash of Genius,' a heart-tugging David-and-Goliath story starring Greg Kinnear in a moving performance as the inventor of the intermittent windshield wiper who takes on Ford and loses everything in the process," Anne Thompson ...

We all know that David Fincher is an uncompromising director (and why shouldn't he be? The guy is one of the best working today). But, even if you don't like the man, you have to admire someone who is truly willing to put his money where his mouth is. In an interview unearthed by The Playlist, Heavy Metal publisher (and Fincher's collaborator on the Metal reboot ), Kevin Eastman, confirmed that the reason for the project's move from Paramount to Sony was not because of problems with the sex and violence (as earlier reported ), but because of another film altogether. When Metal first jumped studios, there was speculation that Fincher was having trouble getting the green light because of Metal 's risqué subject matter. But, it wasn't Metal they were fighting about, it was Fincher's upcoming fantasy tale, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button . According to Eastman, "We developed it [ Heavy Metal ] for Paramount in January... And it was time for them to make a decision [about going forward with the project] and they were at odds with Fincher over another project, ' The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ,' [because] they wanted him to reduce the running time... and so they said, 'Until you step up to do what we want you to do with Benjamin , we're not going to green light any other of [your] movies.' And David said, 'Fine, f**k you, I'm going to set up [ Heavy Metal ] somewhere else,' so we jumped over to Sony and set it up there." You ca ...

That Heavy Metal movie that David Fincher's putting together that was first announced back in March has been in the news quite a bit the last few days, not all of it good. The first bit of news surrounds the film's studio switch from Paramount to Sony. At first there was no official reason for the switch, but SlashFilm discovered that it was actually Paramount's on-going fight with David Fincher over Curious Case of Benjamin Button that was the inciting incident. In a separate update today, rgbFILTER (via SlashFilm again) posted an interview with Kevin Eastman, where he mentions that "Fincher is directing one, Guillermo del Toro wants to direct one, Zack Snyder wants to direct one, Gore Verbinski wants to direct one." Three new exciting names to add to the list makes this another hot project yet again. Regarding the studio change, Eastman, who owns the Heavy Metal magazine, told ... ...
