DJ Hell and his label, Deejay Gigolos, spearheaded the whole electroclash scene with dark melodies and sick samples. Many dance artists give you simple melodies and beats to beat your head to, but instead DJ Hell plays with dissonance, simple synth lines, and aggressive rhythms. With clear punk influences and a taste for the synthetic [...] ...

Watching the highlights of Milwaukee’s meltdown loss at Wrigley Field Thursday brought back memories 15 years old. And I know that Dusty Baker, Will Clark, Robby Thompson, Dave Righetti and dozens more players and staff of the Giants as well as many San Francisco fans had a collective flashback to the final day of the 1993 season as they got word that the Cubs – down by four in the ninth and down to their last out – rallied to tie the Brewers (Chicago eventually won in 12 innings).   But back to that fateful day in 1993. With no viable options, a fault squarely caused by management, Baker, then the Giants’ skipper, gave the ball to 21-year-old Salomon Torres for the do-or-die game at Dodger Stadium. The Giants had 103 wins but knew they needed one more to force a playoff with Atlanta. It was baseball’s last great race -- winner-take-all -- before the introduction of the wild card.   Torres was the organization’s great hope, an arm of such promise that the Giants refused to trade him for Dennis Martinez in July, a poor decision that may well have cost them a postseason berth. That day at Dodger Stadium, not surprisingly, Torres was not ready for the moment. He was knocked out in the third inning and although the Giants’ bullpen was horrid and allowed the game to spiral beyond reach, Torres became the symbol of the abrupt end to a fine season.   The hangover lingered with Torres. He could never again pitch in San Francisco without the c ...

Following is a note from Peter Mansbridge to Susan Bonner, who was on the diverted Liberal flight that landed in Montreal Tuesday night: I'm sure everyone is a little freaked by your lights on lights off situation and the diverted flight. It reminds me of a situation on the '79 campaign flight of Joe Clark's. We'd just left Toronto on the way to Charlottetown when I heard a strange "pop" … I was sitting beside one of the two engines of the chartered Air Canada DC-9 and I turned to my cameraman, Dave Hall, and said "get your camera ready, I'm sure we just lost an engine." He did and we had. Sure enough, a few minutes later the pilot came on and outlined the problem and that we were heading back to Toronto for an emergency one-engine landing. I won't name names, but there were more than a few well-known journalists who were more than a little rattled by the announcement — some even quickly went into the "head between the knees" emergency landing position even though no one from Air Canada had asked for it. ...

What's the most expensive domestic DL ticket you've ever purchased? Please share, as it might make me feel better... While walking into CVG for a flight home to Atlanta, my office called; Could I go to Dallas instead of home? Sure, who cares if I wear dirty clothes... Complete with the ticket change fee and the walk-up fare from the world's most expensive origination airport, and including home to Atlanta tomorrow, the ticket came in at a whopping $1,459.00 for coach. (Although I did get an upgrade.) My Clark Howard loving, Dave Ramsey admiring, Suzy Oreman following soul is having a hard time with this. Please make me feel better. Please let me know there are more expensive routes out there!! ...

FILE; Dave Clark/AFP/Getty Images Why are oil prices bouncing back ? A hurricane. Kind of. Beginning this weekend, rebels in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta region launched "Hurricane Barbarossa," an operation they claim has left 29 Nigerian soldiers dead . Violence has spread to 10 villages in and around the city of Port Harcourt. Reuters says there have been 100 casualties in all. Rebels claim to have taken 27 oil workers hostages. Oil pipelines, flow stations, and facilities have been destroyed. The country's oil output is down by 115,000 barrels per day. The rebels' message to the world? Ships should not dock, foreign workers should be evacuated, and journalists should come see the destruction. As their spokesman e-mailed journalists on September 15, If the Nigerian military is confident of its capabilities, let them be bold to take journalists and photographers to Orubiri to assess by themselves the aftermath of Barbarossa. We will henceforth begin documenting our raids by providing digital cameras and camcorders for each fighting unit." So what the hurricane is going on over there?? Since coming to power 16 months ago, Nigerian President Omaru Yar'Adua has promised peace talks to end the years of feuding. The rebels claim that their region has been neglected -- underdeveloped and decimated by environmental destruction. So, Yar'Adua promised a Niger Delta summit, a high-power moderator, and a lot more economic development. Bu ...

Central Catholic topped the boys field in the Stark County Invitational Saturday at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course. The Crusaders were paced by Chris Vanckunas’ five-over 75 for a team score of 306, which was three strokes ahead of second-place Louisville. Junior Miller and Evan Lovejoy each shot a 76 while Josh Clay shot a 79. “Nobody had an exceptionally great round, but we had four guys play really solid and it turned out to be enough for a victory,” Central Catholic coach Dave Oates said. “It gives our guys some confidence heading into sectionals. Hopefully we’ll continue to play like we have been the last few weeks.” Northwest’s Alex King and Louisville’s Jay Hollifield were match medalists after shooting an even-par 70 on the Dales course. Jackson finished third, led by Byron Firestone’s 75. John Tidenberg shot 76, Angelo Palmer shot 79 while both Jon Clark and Matt Rehfus each shot an 80. A Blue Springs attorney was named to fill a judicial vacancy on the 16th Jackson County Circuit Court. David M. Byrn, an attorney in private practice with the firm of Jeter Rains & Byrn, L.C., in Blue Springs, was nominated for a judgeship vacated by Judge Thomas C. Clark, who is retiring. Gov. Tobin, an attorney with Murphy & Tobin in Kansas City. Byrn, an attorney in private practice for the last 27 years, was among 20 applicants for the judgeship. A commission, chaired by Chief Judge Thomas J. Newton, selected the three finalists while Blunt made the final selection. “I commend David Byrn for his commitment to public service and know that his legal experience will be an asset as he takes on new responsibilities as a circuit judge,” Blunt said in a written press release. Byrn, 51, of Blue Springs, has practiced law in the Blue Springs firm since graduating from law school. His partners are Dave Jeter and Mark Rains. The practice is on the South Outer Road.   ...

Another very good effort by the Lions, especially for their first road effort of the season. Hopefully, PSU continues to roll and folks watching TV will see better announcing teams than Wishuchsen and Huard. Ugh. What a painful telecast, especially the second time around (watched the game while trying to work with the sound down, not very effective). Huard may have potential, but the play-by-play guy is horrible. It almost, but not quite, had me longing for Dave Pasch and Andre Ware. But back to the game: After the Clark fumble, and the accompanying groans, it was a surprise to see Mark Rubin make a big play disrupting the Syracuse WR screen. Great anticipation by Rubin set up the fumble recovery and the subsequent Clark to 3D-Money Norwood TD. And the rout was on. Players that stood out to me: Royster, continuing to make it look easy, Shipley and Wiz, for helping Royster make it look easy, and the WRs. Although it appeared Williams dropped a big gainer in the 1Q, he seems to be healthy from last week's muscle strain, and it still appears (after three games) that he has that burst of speed back that we haven't seen since his freshman year. read more ...
