Saying "I don't believe the First Amendment is any guarantee to those who wish to disrupt the government," former Maryland state police superintendent Thomas E. Hutchins authorized the infiltration of several anti-war and anti-death-penalty nonviolent protest groups, then added their members to the national terrorism database and the Washington-Baltimore High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area database. In all, 53 citizens were thus included (that we know of -- it'd be naive to think that Maryland is the only state where the police abuse their powers). The police admit that there was "no evidence whatsoever of any involvement in violent crime" by those classified as terrorists. Stunned senators pressed Sheridan to apologize to the activists for the spying, assailed in an independent review last week as "overreaching" by law enforcement officials who were oblivious to their violation of the activists' rights of free expression and association. The letter, obtained by The Washington Post, does not apologize but admits that the state police have "no evidence whatsoever of any involvement in violent crime" by those classified as terrorists. Hutchins told the committee it was not accurate to describe the program as spying. "I doubt anyone who has used that term has ever met a spy," he told the committee. "What John Walker did is spying," Hutchins said, referring to John Walker Jr., a communications specialist for the U.S. Navy convicted ... Source: www.boingboing.net --- 1 day ago
I have no idea if The Manga Guide to Databases will be any good (the publisher sez, "In The Manga Guide to Databases, Tico the fairy teaches the Princess how to simplify her data management. We follow along as they design a relational database, understand the entity-relationship model, perform basic database operations, and delve into more advanced topics. Once the Princess is familiar with transactions and basic SQL statements, she can keep her data timely and accurate for the entire kingdom. Finally, Tico explains ways to make the database more efficient and secure, and they discuss methods for concurrency and replication.") but I sure hope it's the start of a trend. I want a manga guide to supersymmetry, the surplus labor theory of value, tensor calculus and many other elusive concepts. I'm aware that this sort of subject is often covered in Japanese manga books, but to understand them, I'd need a Manga Guide to Japanese first. The Manga Guide to Databases (via Global Nerdy)... ... Hi guys, A few day ago I noticed that one of my sites was getting a lot of clicks from Adwords this month but no sales, so I thought that I would check the database to see what my clickthrough table looked like. Well, the entire database was empty -- the actual database was still there just no tables. I wasn't getting any sales from the sites that I have as subdomains of this site either (not really that unusual though), so I looked at those Databases as well and, while they weren't... ... Last year I logged an issue on the connect site around deploying from BIDS and renamed Databases. https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=281595 I got a couple of messages relating to this issue, one saying that it was being closed as it was a duplicate issue and then another one recently where it was updated to indicate that the issue has been fixed in SQL Server 2008. I think it is really great to get this sort of feedback that something is being done, unfortunately it does not appear to be accurate as I recently tested this issue on SQL Server 2008 RTM and it still appears to be there. So what exactly is this issue? Well, try out the following steps on a dev machine. Deploy the Adventure Works DW 2008 database. Open up Management Studio and rename "Adventure Works DW 2008" to "Adventure Works DW 2008 v2" Change the deployment properties of the Adventure Works DW 2008 project in BIDS to deploy to "Adventure Works DW 2008 v2" Now try to deploy the project. It did not work did it? So what is the expected behaviour here? Personally I expect that I would get a message about the database not being in synch or already existing and being asked if I was sure that I wanted to overwrite it. Instead all you get is the following: And you cannot deploy at all. This is happening because all objects in SSAS have a name property and an ID property and when you deploy a database from BIDS it sets the ID to the s ... Source: www.exforsys.com --- 2 days ago
