New IBM Redpaper for you to download and read: DB2 9 for z/OS Data Sharing: Distributed Load Balancing and Fault Tolerant Configuration This IBM® Redpaper provides information about exploiting client load balancing and fail over capabilities across a DB2® Data Sharing group or a subset of the group members. The information provided will help network specialists and Data base administrators in appropriately configuring Data Sharing groups as TCP/IP servers. We show how to use the functions of DB2 sysplex workload balancing functions, supported by DB2 Connect™ Server and the IBM DB2 Driver for JDBC and SQLJ, in conjunction with the functions of TCP/IP Sysplex Distributor, configured with Dynamic Virtual IP address (Dynamic VIPA or DVIPA) and automatic VIPA takeover, to provide superior load distribution and fail-over capability for transactions and connections across the members of a Data Sharing group. The two functions work together to ensure the highest availability possible for remote applications accessing a DB2 location in a sysplex. Thanks to Sabine Kaschta for providing this information to share with you! Susan ...

PLoS Medicine today published a new paper that provides useful guidelines for people at academic health centers seeking to support scientific Data Sharing. The paper, Towards a Data Sharing Culture: Recommendations for Leadership from Academic Health Centers, discusses both the enormous benefits and the obstacles to forging a research culture that fosters Data Sharing, and outlines practical steps people can take to set the process in motion. Here’s an excerpt summarizing the paper’s recommendations: Recommendations for Academic Health Centers to Encourage Data Sharing Commit to Sharing research Data as openly as possible, given privacy constraints. Streamline IRB, technology transfer, and information technology policies and procedures accordingly. Recognize Data Sharing contributions in hiring and promotion decisions, perhaps as a bonus to a publication’s impact factor. Use concrete metrics when available. Educate trainees and current investigators on responsible Data Sharing and reuse practices through class work, mentorship, and professional development. Promote a framework for deciding upon appropriate Data Sharing mechanisms. Encourage Data Sharing practices as part of publication policies. Lobby for explicit and enforceable policies in journal and conference instructions, to both authors and peer reviewers. Encourage Data Sharing plans as part of funding policies. Lobby for appropriate Data Sharing requirements by funders, and rec ...

The Cass County commissioners said "no" to the Indiana Geological Survey in response to a request for access to its parcel Data. The article confuses me since at one point it says it'll cost $7000/year for the county to pay for the Web software: "for setting up and maintaining the Web-based technology." A grant would cover two years. At another point the article says the state wants a copy. "It is always the citizens of your county who own that information," [State GIO Jim] Sparks said. "We're asking for a copy of it." The former implies (to me) the county serving up its own Data (that would have a cost). The latter implies (to me) the state would take a copy (which would have a limited, if small, cost). From what I read at the IndianaMap site actual copies of the vector Data are hosted at the The Indiana Geological Survey, so it is a copy. The "Web-based technology" is elsewhere described as "Data transfer technology." The unfortunate part of this story (and many parallel ones) is that it's still tough to convince the Data providers of the benefit of Sharing. - Pharos-Tribune via TMCNet ...
