McAfee plans to acquire Reconnex, a company that specialises in Data Leakage prevention, which is the second company it has acquired in as many years. ... Source: www.computerweekly.com --- 33 days ago
I see that McAfee has announced that it's buying Reconnex , a Data loss prevention firm, for $46 million. It's the latest in a line of similar acquisitions by rival security vendors. Data loss prevention seems to be the hot new technology focus. Content monitoring has taken over the spotlight from firewalls and intrusion prevention. That's in line with my long-standing prediction that in the future, dynamic information flows, rather than static Data stocks, will be the primary focus of information security. Technology can help prevent Data leakages. But it will only work if people take the trouble to apply it and use it properly. We have the same problem with corporate policy. We can set out the rules, but managers don't have the time to read and absorb them. And even if they did, they're unlikely to have the time, budget or resources to enforce them. Effective prevention of Data leaks needs to start with good security awareness, and the encouragement of a more sophisticated security culture. Not the old fashioned one that locks everything away from prying eyes. But one that appreciates the benefits of information sharing, yet, at the same time, also addresses the associated risks. That's the real challenge for Data loss prevention. ... Source: advice.cio.com --- 36 days ago

I've just returned from my summer vacation, somewhat foolishly deciding to spend it under canvas in the south-west of the UK and expecting to get good weather. If my tent had leaked as badly in the last couple of weeks as Data seems to have been leaking in the UK during the same period, I'd be in need of an aqualung by now! If it were an Olympic sport, Britain would have beaten China for pole position in the medals table ! It all started with the loss of a memory stick by a UK Government contractor which contained somewhere around 120,000 records, including the details of 10,000 of our nation's most serious criminals. We then heard about a compromise at global hotel chain Best Western... ... Source: www.securitywatch.co.uk --- 5 days ago
Infosecurity Europe has commissioned new research that looks into various aspects of security problems that are facing many companies. The number one concern of the respondents was Data Leakage, with 69% citing this as their biggest worry. At number two in the security worries league table is how to keep collaborative and mobile working secure, with [...] ... Information Leakage in Optimal Anonymized and Diversified Data, by Chengfang Fang and Ee-Chien Chang

To reconcile the demand of information dissemination and preservation of privacy, a popular approach generalizes the attribute values in the dataset, for example by dropping the last digit of the postal code, so that the published dataset meets certain privacy requirements, like the notions of k-anonymity and l-diversity. On the other hand, the published dataset should remain useful and not over generalized. Hence it is desire to disseminate a database with high "usefulness", measured by a utility function. This leads to a generic framework whereby the optimal dataset (w.r.t. the utility function) among all the generalized datasets that meet certain privacy requirements, is chosen to be disseminated. In this paper, we observe that, the fact that a generalized dataset is optimal may leak information about the original. Thus, an adversary who is aware of how the dataset is generalized may able to derive more information than what the privacy requirements constrained. This observation challenges the widely adopted approach that treats the generalization process as an optimization problem. We illustrate the observation by giving counter-examples in the context of k-anonymity and l-diversity. ... Source: www.darkreading.com --- 32 days ago

This research addresses the Data Leakage Prevention and Data Loss Protection (DLP/ILP) Market. Specifically included in this research are companies that provide DLP/ILP products and solutions that reside at the network's perimeter and its endpoints such as workstations and laptop. This research will be limited to actual products and solutions and therefore will not professional services that surround this technology. Market size and forecast measurements are provided based on vendor-level revenues and do not include revenues generated by distributors. ... Source: blogs.techrepublic.com.com --- 19 days ago

In this SPIE, Stratecast will outline the areas of strategic execution that we believe integration-seeking security vendors should pursue in order to be successful. Certainly, this is a high stakes game as hundreds of millions of dollars have already been spent to acquire DLP assets and significant expenditures are needed to execute on these strategies. ... As more organisatons are planning or have implemented ESX in production more focus is now being given to management and security of these environmnets I am seeing many who are realising that current security practices do not protect adequetlty and many have not even updated their security policies to include the virtual infrastructure nor considered the implications, risks or changes. The main issues to consider are- Mobility Trusted Computing Base now includes all the hosts that a VM has run on Identity Complicated ownership history, asset management Data Lifetime Data Leakage and erasure issues Separation of Duties One hyper-user rules them all Duel controls Server ops no longer needs network ops, security ops or purchasing Remember also that physical security controls such as IDS, IPS etc cannot see into the hypervisor (Virtual switch) so there is no visibility or control as to what is happening in this security zone (layer) unless you implement a Virtualization security solution to address this. One of the few and by far the best that I have seen is CatBird (www.catbird.com) with their V-Agent^TM^ "in the cloud" solution which addresses all the issues above - check it out!! ...
